Amused

Chapter 6: The Secret My Sister Carried

The image on the screen froze the entire ballroom.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the person walking out of my father’s hospital room wasn’t Michael.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was Emma.

My sister.

The one person I had spent seven years believing hated me because I wasn’t there.

The one person I thought had been hurt by my absence.

The one person who had looked me in the eyes tonight and asked why I left.

Now everyone was staring at her.

Including me.

“Emma…”

My voice barely worked.

She looked at the screen.

Then at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Fear.

Real fear.

“James,” she whispered.

I took a step toward her.

“Why were you in Dad’s room?””

Her lips parted.

Nothing came out.

The silence was worse than any answer.

Michael looked relieved.

Not because he cared about Emma.

Because he had found another person to hide behind.

“Interesting, isn’t it?”” he said.

I turned toward him.

“You knew.””

He smiled faintly.

“I knew enough.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Michael, choose your next words carefully.””

Michael ignored him.

“James, maybe you should ask your sister what she was doing that night.””

Emma closed her eyes.

“Stop.””

Her voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Michael looked at her.

“You’re the one who wanted the truth.””

She looked at him.

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You wanted to use the truth.””

That was the first time I saw something change between them.

Something I couldn’t explain.

Like they were no longer allies.

They were enemies who knew each other’s secrets.

Robert noticed too.

“Emma.””

She looked at him.

“I can explain.””

I stared at her.

“Then explain.””

The words came out colder than I intended.

Her face fell.

Because she knew why.

Because for seven years, I had lived with her silence.

Now she had to live with mine.

She looked around the ballroom.

At the guests.

At the screens.

At the people who were watching our family fall apart in real time.

Then she looked at me.

“I was there because Dad asked me to come.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“The hospital called me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“But they called me.””

She nodded.

“They called both of us.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor had shifted beneath me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

She looked down.

“Of what Dad was going to say.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Emma took a breath.

Then she finally said the words she had been carrying for seven years.

“Dad knew about the company.””

I froze.

My company.

The one that had collapsed.

The one I had spent years trying to rebuild.

“What about it?””

“He knew you were hiding how bad things had gotten.””

I looked away.

Because that part was true.

I hadn’t told him everything.

My father had been sick, and I refused to add more weight to his shoulders.

Emma continued.

“He knew you were losing everything.””

“I didn’t want him worrying.””

“I know.””

Her voice softened.

“That’s what he said.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He said you were protecting him.””

A painful silence followed.

“Then why?””

“Because he wanted to talk to you.””

She wiped her eyes.

“He wanted you to stop pretending you were okay.””

I felt my throat tighten.

That sounded exactly like him.

My father always saw through me.

Even when I lied.

Even when I smiled.

Even when I said everything was fine.

“So you went there.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

She looked at the floor.

“I arrived before you.””

The room disappeared again.

Seven years.

Seven years of believing I was the only one who had failed him.

But I wasn’t.

We both had secrets.

“I went into his room,” she said.

Her voice became quieter.

“He was awake.””

I closed my eyes.

I could almost see it.

My father in that hospital bed.

Weak.

Tired.

But still trying to protect his children.

“What did he say?””

Emma looked at me.

“He asked about you.””

My chest tightened.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

She smiled sadly.

“He asked if you were still blaming yourself.””

I looked down.

Because even at the end, my father knew.

Emma continued.

“I told him I was angry with you.””

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I told him I didn’t understand why you kept trying to save everyone except yourself.””

I swallowed.

“And what did he say?””

She looked at the letter in my hand.

“He said you were the strongest person he knew.””

I closed my eyes.

The room became painfully quiet.

“Then why did you hate me?””

Emma looked devastated.

“I didn’t.””

I opened my eyes.

“What?””

“I never hated you.””

Her voice broke.

“I hated what I thought happened.””

She looked at me.

“I hated the idea that Dad died thinking you chose not to come back.””

I shook my head.

“But you knew I went for medicine.””

She looked away.

“No.””

A cold feeling entered my chest.

“What do you mean?””

“I didn’t know.””

She looked at Michael.

“Because Uncle Michael told me something else.””

My eyes moved toward him.

“What?””

Emma’s hands trembled.

“He told me you left because Dad said something that hurt you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He said you got angry. That you told Dad you were done. That you walked out and never came back.””

“That’s not true.””

“I know that now.””

She looked broken.

“But back then…”

Her voice faded.

I understood.

She was young.

She had just lost her father.

And someone she trusted gave her a reason to hate me.

Michael stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone looked at him.

He forced a smile.

“Two grieving children misunderstood a situation.””

Robert laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“You expect us to believe that?””

Michael’s expression hardened.

“I expect everyone here to stop pretending James is innocent.””

He pointed at me.

“Because he wasn’t.””

I turned.

“What did I do?””

Michael stared.

“You signed the documents.””

My stomach tightened.

“What documents?””

Emma looked confused.

“What is he talking about?””

Michael smiled.

“The company transfer papers.””

I felt something inside me go still.

“What company transfer papers?””

He looked surprised.

Then he laughed.

“Oh, James.””

His voice became softer.

“You really don’t remember.””

A wave of unease moved through me.

Because once again…

there was a missing piece.

A blank space.

A moment my mind refused to touch.

Robert noticed.

“James?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know what he means.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Seven years ago, before your father died, he asked you to sign over control of the company.””

“That never happened.””

“You were exhausted.””

“No.””

“You were desperate.””

“No.””

“You signed.””

My heart started racing.

I looked at Emma.

She looked just as confused.

“I don’t remember signing anything.””

Michael smiled.

“That’s because you weren’t supposed to.””

The ballroom went silent.

“What does that mean?”” Robert asked.

Michael looked at me.

“It means someone changed the documents afterward.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Michael looked around.

Then slowly pointed.

Not at himself.

Not at Emma.

At someone else.

Everyone followed his finger.

It landed on Robert.

The entire room gasped.

I stared at him.

“Robert?””

Robert’s expression changed.

Not guilt.

Something else.

Something worse.

Regret.

Michael smiled.

“Ask him.””

I looked at Robert.

My voice was barely a whisper.

“Is there something you need to tell me?””

Robert didn’t answer.

And that silence told me everything.

Because after seven years of lies…

the truth had finally started coming out.

But it wasn’t only my uncle who had secrets.

May you like

It was the man who had just stood beside me and promised to protect me.

Robert Whitmore.
