Chapter 2: The Missing Fifty Thousand
My father had always been the calm one.
That was what scared me the most.
Daniel Carter was not a man who yelled easily. He was the kind of person who would sit silently for ten minutes before answering a difficult question because he wanted to be fair.
But that afternoon, standing in our backyard, fairness disappeared.
“Rebecca,” he said, “answer me.””
She looked around at the guests.
Some people suddenly found the grass very interesting.
“I can explain.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“No. You can explain after you tell me where my daughter’s money went.””
Marcus looked between them.
“Mom, what’s happening?””
Rebecca forced a smile.
“Nothing. Your father is just upset.””
My father laughed once.
Not because something was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“My daughter worked for years for that money.””
Rebecca rolled her eyes.
“She has plenty of opportunities.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
Opportunities?
Did she think my savings appeared magically?
Did she think those late nights at the café were easy?
I remembered standing behind that counter while other teenagers went to parties. I remembered counting tips after closing. I remembered telling myself every exhausted night was worth it because college would be my escape.
Daniel looked at her.
“You took money from her account.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“We’re married. We’re family.””
“That is not an answer.””
“It was for family.””
My father’s voice became sharper.
“Where is the $50,000?””
Rebecca looked away.
That was when I knew.
She had spent it.
But I didn’t know how.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Mom, what does he mean?””
Rebecca glared at him.
“Go inside.””
“No.””
Everyone looked at Marcus.
For the first time, he didn’t look confident.
He looked scared.
“I want to know.””
Rebecca’s face hardened.
“Marcus.””
“No,” he repeated.
“The car was $35,000. You told me everything was paid for.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You didn’t know?””
Marcus swallowed.
“I thought…”
He looked at me.
“I thought she got a loan.””
A painful silence followed.
I couldn’t believe it.
Even Marcus didn’t know.
Daniel walked toward Rebecca and held out his hand.
“Give me your phone.””
She stepped back.
“What?””
“Your phone.””
“Why?””
“Because I want to see where my daughter’s money went.””
Rebecca gripped it tightly.
“You don’t trust me?””
My father’s expression broke.
“After today? No.””
She started crying.
Not the kind of crying I had seen before.
This was different.
This was panic.
“Daniel, please.””
“Give me the phone.””
She refused.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Daniel reached forward and took it from her hand.
Rebecca gasped.
“You can’t do that!””
“I can when it’s my daughter’s future you stole.””
He unlocked the phone.
Her face went white.
I watched as my father opened the banking app.
A few seconds passed.
Then he stopped.
“What is this?””
Rebecca said nothing.
Daniel looked at the screen.
“What is this payment?””
Her tears increased.
“Daniel…”
He turned the phone toward her.
“Explain.””
I stepped closer.
“What did you find?””
My father looked at me.
His eyes were full of disappointment.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
And somehow that hurt more.
“She transferred money.””
“How much?””
He looked back at the screen.
“Fifty thousand dollars.””
My heart dropped.
“Where?””
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“Please don’t do this here.””
Daniel’s voice shook.
“Where did you send my daughter’s money?””
She whispered something.
I couldn’t hear.
“What?”” my father demanded.
Rebecca looked up.
“I sent it to my mother.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel stared.
“Your mother?””
“She needed help.””
My father looked confused.
“For what?””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
“Rebecca.””
She wiped her face.
“My mother wanted to take a trip.””
The backyard went silent.
I felt numb.
A trip.
My college savings.
My future.
Gone.
Because someone wanted a vacation.
Marcus looked horrified.
“Mom… you used Sophie’s money for Grandma’s trip?””
Rebecca snapped.
“It wasn’t like that!””
Daniel stepped back.
“No?””
She started talking quickly.
“She was depressed. She deserved something nice. I was going to replace it.””
“With what?””
She had no answer.
I looked at my father.
“Dad…”
He looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Regret.
“I’m sorry, Sophie.””
I wanted to believe him.
I wanted to say it wasn’t his fault.
But the truth was sitting right there in front of us.
My future had been taken.
And nobody had asked me.
Then Daniel looked at Rebecca’s phone again.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He stared at another message.
A message that had nothing to do with the trip.
He slowly turned the screen around.
May you like
And my heart stopped when I saw the name at the top.
Because the person Rebecca had been sending money to was not her mother.
