Chapter 5: The Truth Margaret Never Told

The number stayed in David’s mind.

Twenty thousand dollars.

Another payment.

Another secret.

He ended the call slowly.

Jessica immediately noticed his expression.

“What happened?””

David looked at her.

“The bank found another transfer.””

Her face changed.

“What transfer?””

“Twenty thousand dollars.””

Silence.

Margaret appeared at the top of the stairs.

She heard the amount.

And suddenly, her face turned pale.

David noticed.

“Mom?””

Margaret looked away.

“Mom, what is it?””

She didn’t answer.

David walked toward her.

“You know about this?””

Margaret sat down slowly.

“I didn’t want you to know.””

His heart sank.

“Why?””

She looked at her hands.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Mom, you don’t have anything to be ashamed of.””

Margaret took a deep breath.

“Jessica asked me for that money.””

David turned toward his wife.

Jessica looked uncomfortable.

“For what?””

Margaret whispered:

“She said she needed help.””

“When?””

“Before I moved in.””

David looked confused.

“What did she tell you?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“She told me she was struggling. She said if I helped her, she would always take care of me.””

David felt a wave of disappointment.

Jessica quickly stepped forward.

“I was going to pay it back.””

David looked at her.

“Were you?””

Jessica didn’t answer.

Margaret continued.

“I didn’t tell you because I thought it would hurt your marriage.””

David sat beside her.

“You protected her.””

Margaret nodded.

“She is your wife.””

David looked at his mother.

“And you are my mother.””

Those words broke through Margaret’s silence.

For years, she had convinced herself that keeping peace was more important than telling the truth.

But now she understood something.

Silence didn’t protect families.

Sometimes, it only protected the person causing the damage.

David turned toward Jessica.

“You owe my mother more than money.””

Jessica’s eyes filled with tears.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

David shook his head.

“Mistakes happen once. This was a choice.””

Jessica looked down.

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

“That we would never have enough.””

David took a breath.

“You had a problem. You should have talked to me.””

Jessica wiped her eyes.

“I thought you would choose her.””

David looked at her.

“She’s my mother. She raised me.””

The room became quiet.

Then David walked to the folder on the table.

“I’m giving you ten days.””

Jessica looked up.

“For what?””

“To return everything you took.””

Her face fell.

“And if I don’t?””

David looked at her sadly.

“Then we decide what happens next.””

Margaret watched her son.

She had never seen him like this.

Not angry.

Not cruel.

Just finally awake.

Later that evening, David helped his mother bring her old suitcase upstairs.

The same suitcase she had packed to leave.

He placed it in the closet.

“You won’t need this anymore.””

Margaret smiled through tears.

“I never wanted to be a problem.””

David hugged her.

“You never were.””

For the first time in months, Margaret slept peacefully.

But downstairs, Jessica sat alone at the kitchen table.

She looked at the documents.

She looked at the empty chair where Margaret used to sit.

And she realized something.

She had spent months trying to remove one person from the house.

But now she might be the one who had lost her place in the family.

The next morning, David received a message.

It was from Jessica.

Only four words.

“I need to tell you something.””

May you like

And beneath it was a photo.

A photo of a document that would reveal the one secret Margaret had been hiding from everyone.
