Chapter 7: The Promise My First Wife Made Before She Died
Rachel stood in the kitchen doorway with one hand resting on Lily's shoulder.
For several seconds, she didn't look at me.
She looked at the letter Laura had placed on the coffee table, then at Vanessa, then at the children.
Finally, she whispered, "I never wanted you to find out this way.""
My throat tightened.
"Find out what, Rachel?""
She swallowed.
"That Emily asked me to protect Lily if anything ever happened to you.""
Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.
"Of course she did. Emily always thought she was the only person who knew what was best for that child.""
Rachel turned toward her.
"Don't you dare speak about Emily like that.""
Vanessa stood abruptly.
"Why not? She's been dead for years, and somehow she still gets to control this family.""
"Enough," Laura said firmly.
"Nobody is going to resolve anything by shouting. Rachel, if you're willing, please explain what happened. Michael needs to understand the context of the document.""
Rachel nodded slowly.
Then she sat beside me.
"When Emily was diagnosed with the condition that eventually took her life, she started making arrangements for Lily. She updated her will, reviewed the insurance policy, and spoke to an attorney about guardianship.""
I remembered those final months with painful clarity.
Emily had experienced headaches she dismissed as stress. Then came the emergency room visit, the scans, and the diagnosis that none of us had expected.
A brain aneurysm.
The doctors had explained the risks, but Emily had been determined to come home and spend as much time as possible with Lily.
She had been terrified of leaving our daughter behind.
But she had never told me that she wanted Rachel to become Lily's guardian.
"Why didn't she tell me?"" I asked.
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
"She tried.""
I stared at her.
"What do you mean?""
"She wanted you to agree to a guardianship plan before the next medical procedure. But you were exhausted, Michael. You were working, taking care of Lily, and trying to understand what the doctors were telling you. Every time Emily tried to discuss what would happen if she died, you told her she was going to get better.""
I lowered my head.
I remembered one night in particular.
Emily had been sitting on the edge of our bed, folding Lily's tiny clothes into a drawer.
She had asked me what I would do if she didn't come home from the hospital.
I had become angry.
Not with her, but with the question.
I told her she needed to stop talking like that. I told her Lily needed her mother and that I wasn't prepared to discuss a future without her.
Emily had cried quietly after I left the room.
I had convinced myself that avoiding the subject was a form of hope.
Now I wondered whether I had deprived her of the chance to tell me something important.
Rachel took my hand.
"She wasn't trying to replace you. She wanted to make sure Lily would always have someone who knew her, loved her, and would protect her if you couldn't.""
I looked at the document again.
"And you agreed?""
Rachel nodded.
"I promised her.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"So you were both planning to take Lily away from me before I even married Michael.""
Rachel looked at her in disbelief.
"Emily died before Michael met you.""
"That's not what I meant.""
"Then explain what you mean.""
Vanessa turned toward me.
"She never trusted me. None of you ever did.""
I felt the old instinct to calm everyone down rise inside me.
May you like
Then I looked at Lily.
She was standing beside Rachel, holding the hem of her shirt.
