Amused

Chapter 6: The Report That Vanished

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

I stood in my kitchen with the phone pressed against my ear, staring at nothing.

A child welfare report.

Those four words changed everything.

Not because I believed every accusation automatically.

Not because I wanted to punish Vanessa.

But because I realized something terrifying.

There had been warnings.

Warnings that existed before Noah was born.

Before our marriage.

Before I trusted her enough to leave our son in her care.

“Michael,” I finally said, “what report are you talking about?””

He sighed.

“I knew this day might come.””

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Talk like you’ve been waiting for this.””

There was silence.

Then his voice softened.

“Daniel, I’ve been waiting for someone to finally ask the right questions.””

I walked toward the window.

The street outside was quiet.

Normal.

That almost made it worse.

The world looked exactly the same even though mine had changed overnight.

“Tell me everything.””

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

I could hear him breathing.

Then:

“Eight years ago, after what happened with Lily, Rachel filed a report.””

I closed my eyes.

“Against Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“And what happened?””

“She denied everything.””

“That doesn’t surprise me.””

Michael didn’t respond.

That bothered me.

“What?””

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

His voice became careful.

“Vanessa is very convincing when she wants to be.””

I looked down.

I already knew that.

I had lived with it.

“I’m listening.””

“When the report was filed, Vanessa told everyone Rachel was unstable. She said Rachel was angry about the divorce and trying to ruin her.””

“Did people believe her?””

“Some did.””

“Some?””

“Yes.””

I waited.

Finally, Michael said:

“I believed her at first.””

The honesty surprised me.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

He sounded ashamed.

“She was my sister. I wanted to believe she was overwhelmed, not dangerous.””

I leaned against the counter.

“But?””

“But then I found out she lied.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she lie about?””

“She told me Lily was outside for ten minutes.””

“And?””

“It was over an hour.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Noah was sleeping upstairs.

A child who trusted adults.

A child who believed parents were supposed to protect him.

“She lied to you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Michael was quiet.

The silence said more than words.

“Michael.””

“I tried.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“I tried to warn you.””

“When?””

“Before your wedding.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I called you.””

I searched my memory.

The months before my wedding to Vanessa had been chaos.

Work.

Planning.

Family.

A thousand conversations.

“I don’t remember.””

“Because Vanessa intercepted the conversation.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

“She told me you didn’t want drama before the wedding.””

I stared at the wall.

“She said you were happy and I needed to respect that.””

My hands tightened.

“Why would you believe her?””

“I didn’t.””

A pause.

“That’s why I stopped talking to her.””

I slowly sat down.

The pieces were starting to connect.

The distance between Vanessa and Michael.

The way she always changed the subject whenever he came up.

The way she said her family “didn’t understand her.””

“Michael.””

“Yeah?””

“Was there anything else?””

Another pause.

Longer.

“Yes.””

I waited.

“There was another report.””

My heart sank.

“About who?””

“Noah.””

The room went completely silent.

“What?””

“Not after yesterday.””

His voice lowered.

“Before.””

I stood.

“Explain.””

“Someone called child services when Noah was a baby.””

My mouth went dry.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“What did the report say?””

Michael hesitated.

Then:

“That Vanessa was leaving him unattended.””

I felt like the air had been knocked out of me.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I repeated it because I couldn’t accept it.

“I would have known.””

Michael’s voice was gentle.

“Would you?””

The question hurt because I didn’t know the answer.

I thought back.

Noah’s first year.

Vanessa staying home with him.

Me working long hours.

Her telling me she was exhausted.

Her saying motherhood was harder than she expected.

I had believed her.

I had defended her.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because the report was closed.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa convinced them it was a misunderstanding.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That phrase again.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the blue notebook sitting on the table.

The same story.

The same excuse.

Different child.

Different year.

Same pattern.

“Michael, I need proof.””

“I know.””

“Not stories.””

“I know.””

“Documents. Reports. Anything.””

“I have something.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“What?””

“A copy of the original report.””

I stopped breathing for a second.

“You have it?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because I knew one day someone would need to see it.””

I swallowed.

“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””

His voice cracked slightly.

“Because I was afraid.””

That answer surprised me.

“Afraid of what?””

“Of being wrong.””

I didn’t speak.

“Daniel, when you love someone, sometimes you spend years explaining away things you don’t want to believe.””

I looked toward the stairs.

That was exactly what I had done.

I had explained.

Every time.

She was tired.

She was stressed.

She was learning.

She didn’t mean it.

I had created excuses because the alternative was too painful.

“Can you send it?””

“Yes.””

A few seconds later, my phone buzzed.

A file appeared.

*Child Welfare Assessment - Confidential*

My fingers hovered over it.

Then I opened it.

The first page was filled with official information.

The second page contained statements.

And one sentence immediately caught my attention.

*Reporter expressed concern regarding repeated incidents of inadequate supervision involving minor child.*

I kept reading.

The report described a pattern.

Not one event.

Multiple concerns.

Leaving a child unattended.

Using isolation as punishment.

Dismissing emotional distress.

My eyes stopped at one section.

*Mother stated child was “dramatic” and “seeking attention.””*

I closed the document.

Those words.

Again.

The same words.

My phone rang.

Michael.

I answered.

“Daniel?””

“Yeah.””

“Did you read it?””

“Yes.””

“I’m sorry.””

I rubbed my face.

“I don’t understand.””

“What?””

“How did I not know?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Because there was no good answer.

After we ended the call, I sat there for a long time.

Then I heard footsteps.

I looked up.

Noah stood at the bottom of the stairs.

His hair was messy.

His eyes were tired.

“Daddy?””

I immediately stood.

“Hey buddy.””

He walked toward me slowly.

“Are you leaving too?””

The question stopped me.

“What?””

His eyes filled with fear.

“Mommy left.””

He swallowed.

“Are you going to leave?””

I dropped to my knees.

“Noah.””

I held his shoulders gently.

“Look at me.””

He did.

“I am not leaving you.””

“But you were working.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

“I know.””

“You weren’t there.””

I swallowed.

“You’re right.””

His face changed.

He wasn’t expecting me to admit it.

“I should have noticed.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I should have listened better.””

Noah stared at me.

Then he hugged me.

And I held him like I was trying to make up for every moment I missed.

After a while, he whispered:

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Can I ask you something?””

“Anything.””

“Is Mommy going to take Chloe away?””

I froze.

“What makes you ask that?””

“Because Chloe said Mommy gets rid of people when they tell the truth.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Noah looked scared.

“She said Mommy did it before.””

Before.

That word.

Again.

I slowly pulled back.

“Buddy, what did Chloe mean?””

Noah looked upstairs.

Then whispered:

“Daddy…”

His voice shook.

“Chloe knows where the other girl is.””

I stared at him.

“What other girl?””

He looked at me with terrified eyes.

“The girl from Mommy’s old pictures.””

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Michael.

One sentence.

*Daniel, I found out who the girl in the photo was.*

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*And you need to know why Vanessa never wanted you to meet her.*
