Chapter 9: The Bargain at the Abandoned House

Detective Harris blocked the front door before I could reach the driveway.
"Richard, stop.""
"Mia is out there.""
"I know.""
"Vanessa has her.""
"We don't know that yet. We have a note, but we don't have confirmation that your wife took her.""
I held up the paper.
"Who else would write this?""
"Someone who wants you to believe she took her.""
The distinction made no difference to my fear.
I had promised Mia she was safe. I had told her I would never leave her. And now her bed was empty, her window was closed, and the only clue I had was a note demanding the ledger.
"She could be hurt," I said.
"That's why we're going to move quickly and carefully. But if you rush into that property alone, you may give whoever took her another victim to control.""
Martin stood beside me, pale but composed.
"Richard, let the police do their job.""
I looked at him.
"What if they arrive too late?""
"What if you arrive and make it impossible for them to get Mia out safely?""
I wanted to reject the argument.
Instead, I handed Detective Harris the note.
"Then tell me what to do.""
She nodded.
"First, we establish how Mia left the house. Second, we secure the ledger and the remaining evidence. Third, we coordinate with the officers who are approaching the property.""
I followed her to the security monitor.
The front-door camera showed no one leaving through the entrance during the previous hour. The back-door camera had recorded a brief interruption at 3:38 a.m., followed by a figure moving along the garden path.
The image was grainy.
The figure was wearing a dark jacket and carrying something small.
Detective Harris enlarged the footage.
It was Vanessa.
She was holding Mia's hand.
Mia was wearing her pink slippers and carrying the stuffed rabbit.
My throat tightened.
They walked toward the side gate.
Vanessa looked over her shoulder twice before disappearing from view.
"She took her," I whispered.
Detective Harris didn't argue.
She called for the footage to be preserved and sent to the responding officers.
Then she asked me to check the rest of the house.
I ran upstairs.
Mia's closet stood open. Her overnight bag was missing. So was the little photograph of Emily that she kept beside her bed.
On the dresser lay another note, folded beneath the base of a lamp.
This one was addressed to me.
I know you hate me. You have every right to. But if you want Mia to live, you have to trust me for once.
There was no signature.
I showed it to Detective Harris.
"She's trying to make you believe she's protecting the child," the detective said.
"We can't assume that's true. But we can use the note to establish contact if she calls.""
I looked at the clock.
It was 4:02 a.m.
The sky outside was beginning to lighten.
I had never felt time move so slowly.
Then Thomas called again.
"Richard, are you still there?""
"Yes.""
"Did she take Mia?""
"Yes.""
He swore.
"Listen to me. Vanessa may believe she's rescuing the girl, but she doesn't understand what Daniel will do if he gets the ledger.""
"Then tell me how to stop him.""
"Give the ledger to the police. Don't take it to the property.""
"Vanessa's note says I have to bring it.""
"Then she's either being forced to say that, or she's trying to buy time.""
"Buy time for what?""
"To get Mia out.""
I stared at the empty bed.
"Why would she take Mia in the first place?""
"Because Daniel needs the child, and Vanessa knows it. She may have realized too late that the plan was more dangerous than she thought.""
"She left her outside a resort.""
"I know.""
"She lied to her about her mother.""
"I know.""
"She took her passport.""
"I know, Richard!""
His voice cracked.
"I'm not defending her. I'm telling you that desperate people can do terrible things and then convince themselves they're doing the right thing. Vanessa may be trying to undo what she started.""
I pressed the phone against my ear.
"Can you prove that?""
"No.""
"Then I have no reason to trust her.""
"Trust the evidence. Not her.""
Those words stopped me.
For the first time since Thomas had called, I felt that he might be telling the truth.
Detective Harris was already coordinating with officers near the Whitmore property. She had instructed them not to approach without a clear plan, given the possibility that Mia was being held inside.
A police negotiator had been alerted.
The ledger was sealed and placed in an evidence container.
Martin remained beside me while we waited.
At 4:19 a.m., Vanessa called.
Detective Harris signaled for me to answer and put the phone on speaker.
"Vanessa?""
Her breathing was ragged.
"Richard.""
"Where is Mia?""
"She's safe.""
"Put her on the phone.""
"Not yet.""
My fingers tightened around the device.
"Vanessa, if you have taken her without my consent, you need to bring her back immediately.""
"I know.""
"Then do it.""
"I can't.""
"Why?""
"Because Daniel is waiting for us.""
"Us?""
A pause.
"I'm at the Whitmore property.""
"With Mia?""
"Yes.""
I closed my eyes.
"Then leave. Take her to the police station. Tell them everything.""
"I can't leave until I know he won't come after her.""
"That's what the police are for.""
"You don't understand what Daniel is capable of.""
"Then help us stop him.""
She began crying.
"I thought I could fix this. I thought if I got Mia to Boston, I could claim the money, give Daniel what he wanted, and then disappear with her. I thought I could make everything right.""
I stared at the floor.
"You planned to take my granddaughter away for money.""
"I thought I could protect her afterward.""
"By lying to her about her mother?""
"I know.""
"By leaving her alone outside a resort?""
"I know!""
Her voice broke.
"I know what I did, Richard. I see her face every time I close my eyes.""
For the first time, I heard genuine remorse in her voice.
It didn't erase anything.
It didn't make her safe.
But it made me listen.
"Where is Mia right now?""
"Upstairs. In a room with a locked door. I'm outside it.""
"Is she hurt?""
"No. She's frightened, but she's not hurt.""
"Let me speak to her.""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then I heard a door open.
"Mia?"" she called softly.
"Sweetheart, your grandpa is on the phone.""
A small voice came through.
"Grandpa?""
I nearly collapsed.
"Mia, sweetheart. Are you all right?""
"I'm scared.""
"I know, baby. The police are coming. Stay where you are, and listen to the adults who are keeping you safe.""
"Vanessa said she was taking me away from the bad man.""
I looked at Vanessa's note.
"Do you know who the bad man is?""
Mia sniffled.
"She said he knew Mommy.""
"Did you see him?""
"No. But I heard him yelling.""
I closed my eyes.
"You're doing so well, sweetheart. I'm going to come get you.""
"Promise?""
"I promise.""
The phone moved away from Mia.
Vanessa returned.
"Richard, you need to listen. Daniel doesn't know I called you.""
"Then tell the police where you are.""
"He'll hurt her if he finds out.""
"How do you know?""
"Because I heard him talking to someone. He said once the child was verified, he wouldn't need to worry about her anymore.""
My blood ran cold.
"What does that mean?""
"I don't know.""
"Vanessa, you need to tell me everything.""
She took a shaky breath.
"Daniel said the trust has a clause that prevents him from accessing the remaining funds while the beneficiary is a minor unless a legal representative is appointed. He wanted me to bring Mia to Boston so he could establish that I was acting on her behalf.""
"And then?""
"Then the assets would be transferred to a company he controls.""
"Why would you agree to that?""
"Because he promised me a share.""
I felt sick.
She continued before I could speak.
"But the documents I found yesterday changed everything. The trust has a separate provision. If the original ledger is produced, the entire transfer can be challenged. Daniel could lose everything.""
"And you think he wants the ledger destroyed.""
"Yes.""
"Then why are you asking me to bring it to him?""
"Because he believes I have it.""
I stared at the evidence container.
"He knows I found it.""
"Not yet. He thinks I retrieved it from your house before you discovered it. I told him I would bring it tonight.""
"You're lying to him.""
"Yes.""
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Vanessa said, "Richard, I need you to understand something. I didn't start this because I wanted to hurt Mia. I started it because I was drowning in debt, and Daniel promised me a way out. When I realized what he wanted, I tried to stop.""
"You could have stopped before you left her at the resort.""
"I know.""
"You could have told me the truth.""
"I was afraid you'd send me to prison.""
"That was your concern?""
"No. I was afraid Daniel would kill me.""
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"He told me what happened to Thomas.""
The room seemed to tilt.
"What did he tell you?""
"That Thomas wasn't the only person who disappeared.""
Before I could ask another question, a loud crash sounded in the background.
Vanessa screamed.
The phone fell.
I heard footsteps, a man's voice, and Mia crying.
Then the line went dead.
Detective Harris immediately called the officers approaching the property.
Within seconds, the entire room was moving.
The police had located Vanessa's phone near the old Whitmore house. Officers were positioning themselves around the building while a negotiator attempted to establish contact.
I stood beside Martin, unable to move.
My phone vibrated again.
A text from Vanessa.
*He knows about the ledger. He knows Thomas called you. Don't trust the man who says he's my brother-in-law.*
I read the message twice.
Thomas was my brother.
He had called me.
And Vanessa was warning me not to trust him.
I turned toward Martin.
"What does she mean?""
He looked at the screen.
"I don't know.""
Another message appeared.
*Richard, there are two men here. Daniel is one of them. The other is—*
The message ended abruptly.
Then a final notification arrived.
A photograph.
It showed Mia sitting on the floor beside a wooden cabinet, holding her rabbit against her chest.
Behind her stood a man whose face was partially obscured by shadow.
But I recognized the watch on his wrist.
I had given that watch to Thomas for his fortieth birthday.
Detective Harris leaned over my shoulder.
"Richard," she said quietly, "who is the man in that photograph?""
My mouth had gone dry.
Because the man standing behind my terrified granddaughter looked exactly like my brother.
And if Thomas had truly been alive all these years, then the person who had just warned me about him might have been telling the truth.
I stared at the photograph.
Then my phone rang.
It was Thomas.
"Richard," he said urgently, "whatever happens, do not let them bring Mia outside.""
I could barely speak.
"You're at the property?""
"No.""
"Then how do you know what's happening?""
A pause.
May you like
Then he said something that made every hair on my arms stand up.
"Because I'm the one who just put her there.""
