Chapter 8: My Mother’s Last Secret

Nobody spoke.

The document sat on the table between us.

A piece of paper that should not exist.

My father picked it up carefully.

“This is fake.””

Marcus leaned back.

“Is it?””

My father examined every detail.

The signature.

The stamp.

The wording.

His hands began shaking.

“Where did you get this?””

Marcus smiled.

“I told you. Your wife kept secrets.””

“No.””

My father looked up.

“She didn’t keep secrets from me.””

The room became silent.

“She kept secrets from people she didn’t trust.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I noticed.

My father noticed too.

“You weren’t supposed to have this.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Aunt Clara suddenly spoke.

“Daniel.””

Everyone turned.

“I think I know where it came from.””

She walked toward the cabinet near the living room.

My father followed her.

She opened a small locked drawer.

Inside was an old envelope.

My heart raced.

“What is that?””

My father looked at it.

“My sister gave this to me the week before the funeral.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because she told me not to open it unless someone tried to take what belonged to you.””

My fingers trembled.

Someone had known.

My mother had known.

She had prepared for this.

My father opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he handed it to me.

I recognized my mother’s handwriting immediately.

Emily,

If you are reading this, someone has tried to stop you from reaching the future you earned.

I covered my mouth.

My mother’s words continued.

Trust your father. Trust Clara. But do not trust Marcus.

My eyes lifted.

Marcus looked nervous for the first time.

The letter explained everything.

My mother had discovered Marcus had been secretly moving company money.

She had confronted him.

She had planned to remove him.

But before she could, she became sick.

Marcus had waited.

He had waited until she was gone.

Then he started rebuilding his control.

Using Brielle.

Using fear.

Using lies.

I looked at Brielle.

She was crying silently.

“I didn’t know,” she whispered.

I believed her.

For the first time, I believed her.

Marcus suddenly stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

My father looked at him.

“You’re done.””

Marcus laughed.

“You think a letter proves anything?””

“No.””

My father held up his phone.

“But the security footage does.””

Marcus froze.

My father had been recording.

Everything.

The room changed instantly.

Marcus looked around.

Then his face hardened.

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.””

My father replied calmly.

“I know exactly who I’m dealing with.””

Marcus walked toward the door.

But before he left, he turned to me.

“You think you won?””

I said nothing.

He smiled.

“You still don’t know the biggest secret.””

My heart sank.

“What secret?””

Marcus looked at Brielle.

Then at my father.

“The reason your mother chose Emily wasn’t because she was perfect.””

He paused.

“It was because she knew the truth about who Brielle really was.””

Brielle’s face went white.

May you like

And she whispered:

“No…”
