Amused

Chapter 3: The Account My Father Never Opened

My father arrived home at 7:42 p.m., carrying his briefcase in one hand and his phone in the other.

I knew the exact time because I'd been watching the clock for nearly an hour.

Every minute felt like a countdown.

Vanessa had spent the last forty minutes downstairs making dinner, moving around the kitchen as if nothing had happened. The smell of roasted chicken and garlic drifted up the stairs. Mia's laughter occasionally floated from the living room, punctuated by the sharp clicks of her new keyboard.

I hadn't eaten.

I'd barely moved.

At 7:42, the front door opened.

"Daniel!"" Vanessa called brightly.

"You're home early.""

I heard the briefcase land on the console table.

"Where's Emily?"" Dad asked.

"Upstairs, sulking.""

"I'm here," I said, stepping out of my room.

Dad looked up.

The moment he saw my face, his expression changed.

He climbed the stairs two at a time and wrapped his arms around me.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

I hadn't realized how badly I needed that until I was standing against his chest, breathing in the familiar scent of his aftershave and the cold evening air clinging to his jacket.

He held me for several seconds.

Then he drew back and examined my face.

"Have you eaten anything?""

I shook my head.

"All right. We'll handle that in a minute.""

He glanced toward the kitchen.

"Where is Vanessa?""

"Downstairs.""

"Stay with me.""

We walked down together.

Vanessa stood beside the dining table, placing silverware next to three plates. She had changed into a cream blouse and dark trousers. Her hair was neatly arranged, and she'd applied lipstick.

She looked like a woman expecting a pleasant family dinner.

"Daniel, I made your favorite," she said, approaching him with a smile.

"I thought you'd be exhausted after the flight.""

Dad didn't kiss her.

He set his phone on the table.

"We need to talk.""

Vanessa's smile faltered.

"Of course. After dinner?""

"Now.""

Mia appeared in the living room doorway, her new MacBook tucked under one arm.

"What's going on?""

"Nothing you need to worry about, sweetheart," Vanessa said quickly.

"Your father has had a long day.""

Dad looked at the computer.

"Is that new?""

Mia brightened.

"Yes! Mom got it for me. It's the newest model, and it has all the features I need for school.""

"That's nice," he said.

Then he turned to Vanessa.

"How did you pay for it?""

Vanessa's face remained composed.

"With household money.""

"What household money?""

"The money we set aside for family expenses.""

Dad pulled out a chair and sat down.

"Sit, Vanessa.""

She stared at him.

"Daniel, don't be ridiculous. Emily has clearly worked herself into a state over some money she thinks she's entitled to.""

I felt my cheeks burn.

Dad lifted one hand.

"Emily isn't on trial. Sit down.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened, but she took the chair opposite him.

Mia hovered beside the doorway.

"Mom?""

"Go to your room, Mia.""

"But—"

"Now.""

Mia looked at Dad, then at me, her expression twisting into a familiar mixture of annoyance and wounded innocence.

She disappeared upstairs.

Dad unlocked his phone and opened a banking document.

"I spoke with my bank's fraud department on the drive home," he said.

"They confirmed that Emily's account was accessed through a device registered to this household.""

Vanessa gave a short laugh.

"That proves nothing. You know how many devices we have connected to the Wi-Fi?""

"The bank also confirmed that the account's recovery number was changed three days ago.""

"I don't know anything about that.""

Dad turned his phone toward her.

"Then perhaps you can explain this.""

The screen showed a transfer record.

*$2,340 — External Transfer — Authorized Device*

Vanessa barely glanced at it.

"I already told Emily. I borrowed the money.""

"You didn't borrow it from me.""

"Daniel, I was going to replace it.""

"With what?""

"Future income.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"What future income, Vanessa? Your salary hasn't changed in six months, and our household expenses are paid from the joint account.""

She folded her arms.

"I was managing a temporary shortfall.""

"By taking money from a sixteen-year-old?""

"By using money that was sitting in an account while we had bills to pay!""

"That money wasn't sitting there for your convenience. Emily earned it.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Tell him how much you cost this household, Emily. Tell him about the food, the utilities, the insurance. Tell him how much you benefit from living here.""

Dad's chair scraped backward.

"Don't you dare turn this around on her.""

Vanessa's eyes widened.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me.""

For the first time since I'd known her, Vanessa looked as if she wasn't certain what to say.

Dad picked up his phone again.

"The transfers from Emily's account are one problem. The $4,800 transfer from my corporate reserve account is another.""

Vanessa went completely still.

I watched the color drain from her face.

Dad continued.

"I checked the company records. Four thousand eight hundred dollars was moved into an external account on Monday morning. Another transfer of six thousand two hundred dollars followed on Tuesday. Then three thousand five hundred on Wednesday.""

He laid the phone flat on the table.

"That's fourteen thousand five hundred dollars.""

The refrigerator hummed behind us.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

"Daniel, I can explain.""

"Good. Explain.""

"I was trying to help.""

"Who?""

She opened her mouth, then closed it.

Dad leaned forward.

"Who were you trying to help?""

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

The movement was quick, but I caught it.

So did Dad.

He turned to me.

"Emily, did you see any of these transactions before today?""

"No. I only saw the transfers from my account when I logged in.""

"Did Vanessa ever ask you to help with business paperwork?""

"No.""

"Did you ever authorize her to use your phone or banking information?""

"No.""

He nodded, then turned back to Vanessa.

"Every transfer from my reserve account required my authorization. I set it up that way after a payroll issue last year. No one can move money without a verification code sent to my business phone.""

Vanessa swallowed.

Dad reached into his jacket pocket and placed a small black phone on the table.

His company phone.

"I had it with me the entire trip," he said.

"I never received a verification request for any of those transfers.""

Vanessa's hands tightened in her lap.

"Maybe the system glitched.""

"Three times?""

"It happens.""

"Then you'll have no trouble explaining why the transfer records show an authorization token generated from a device registered under your name.""

She looked at him sharply.

"That's impossible.""

Dad didn't blink.

"Is it?""

Vanessa pushed back her chair.

"I don't have to sit here and be interrogated like a criminal.""

"You do if you want me to believe you.""

"I'm your wife!""

"And Emily is my daughter.""

The words rang through the room.

I looked at Dad.

He wasn't shouting. He didn't need to. His voice carried the quiet, deliberate weight I'd heard when he negotiated difficult business deals over the phone.

Vanessa stood and walked toward the kitchen counter.

"I did what I had to do.""

Dad remained seated.

"For whom?""

She didn't answer.

He tapped his phone.

"I've already requested a temporary freeze on the reserve account. The bank is reviewing every transaction. If these transfers were unauthorized, they'll be treated as fraud.""

Vanessa spun around.

"You can't do that!""

"It's my company's money.""

"You'll ruin everything!""

"Everything that belongs to whom?""

She looked at me again.

For one brief second, I saw pure hatred in her eyes.

Then she looked back at Dad and began to cry.

Not the quiet tears of someone ashamed of what she'd done. These came suddenly and dramatically, accompanied by trembling hands and a shaky breath.

"I've been under so much pressure," she said.

"You travel constantly. I manage the house, I take care of the girls, and you never ask how I'm doing. I made one mistake.""

Dad's expression didn't soften.

"You made multiple transfers.""

"I was going to put the money back.""

"Where did it go?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"I can't explain it right now.""

"Then I suggest you start thinking quickly.""

She looked at the dining table, at the plates she'd arranged, at the meal she'd prepared as if dinner could make the problem disappear.

Finally, she said, "I had some expenses.""

"What expenses?""

"Personal expenses.""

Dad closed his eyes for a moment.

"How much?""

She didn't answer.

"Vanessa. How much?""

"Some of it went toward Mia's school expenses.""

"Her school expenses?""

"The computer. Her classes. Things she needs.""

Dad glanced at the MacBook lying on the kitchen island.

"You spent Emily's college fund on a computer for Mia, and you used my company's reserve account for additional expenses?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"I was going to replace everything.""

"With what?""

She whispered something I couldn't hear.

Dad leaned forward.

"Say it clearly.""

"I was expecting money.""

"From where?""

Vanessa shook her head.

Dad stood.

"Then we're finished talking until you can answer that question honestly.""

He picked up his phone and walked into his office.

Vanessa watched him go.

The moment the door closed, her tears vanished.

She turned toward me.

"You did this.""

I stepped backward.

"You took my money.""

"You had no right to involve him.""

"He's my father.""

"And I'm his wife!""

"That doesn't make my money yours.""

She came closer, speaking through clenched teeth.

"You think he's going to protect you forever? You think he'll choose you over his marriage?""

I looked toward the office.

"I don't know what he'll do about your marriage. But I know what you did to me.""

Her face hardened.

"You ungrateful little—"

The office door opened.

Dad stood in the doorway.

"Vanessa.""

She immediately straightened.

He held up a printed statement he'd retrieved from the office printer.

"Come in here. Now.""

She looked at me one last time before walking past him.

The door shut.

I remained in the dining room, staring at the laptop on the counter.

I wanted to feel victorious.

Instead, I felt sick.

My father had discovered that thousands of dollars were missing from his business account, and I had no idea whether the damage ended there.

I went upstairs and sat on my bed, listening to muffled voices through the floor.

At first, I couldn't make out the words.

Then Dad's voice rose.

"You opened an account in my name?""

Silence.

Then Vanessa spoke, too quietly for me to understand.

Dad's response came like a thunderclap.

"Don't lie to me. The bank has the application.""

I stood and moved toward the stairs.

Another voice came from the office.

Not Vanessa's.

A man's voice.

I froze.

"Mr. Carter," the stranger said, "there's something else you need to know about that account.""

Dad answered, "What?""

"The money wasn't just transferred into an external account. Someone used the account to apply for a line of credit.""

I pressed a hand over my mouth.

Dad spoke again, his voice suddenly unsteady.

"How much credit?""

The stranger hesitated.

"Twenty-five thousand dollars.""

My knees nearly buckled.

Then he added one more sentence.

"And the co-signer listed on the application is your daughter, Emily Carter.""

I couldn't breathe.

I had never applied for a loan.

I'd never signed a credit agreement.

I'd never even seen the account.

But someone had used my name.

And as I stood at the top of the stairs, listening to the silence that followed, I realized the missing money was only the beginning.

Because if the bank believed I'd agreed to that loan, Vanessa hadn't just stolen my college fund.

May you like

She might have been trying to make me responsible for a debt I knew nothing about.

And somewhere downstairs, my father was about to discover exactly how far she'd gone.
