Chapter 7: The Woman at the Door
The woman standing in our doorway looked at me the way people look at someone they have spent years mourning.
Her hands trembled around the old photograph.
She had dark hair streaked with silver, tired green eyes, and a small scar above her left eyebrow.
I didn't know her.
But when she looked at me, something inside my chest tightened.
“Who are you?”” I whispered.
She swallowed.
“My name is Elena Bennett.””
Dad stood between us.
“Bennett?””
She nodded.
“My daughter was born twelve years ago at Grady Memorial.””
Dad's expression changed.
Victor looked down.
Denise backed away from the table.
Elena noticed her.
“You.””
Denise's face went white.
Elena's voice shook.
“You were there.””
Denise whispered, “Elena…”
“You remember me.””
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
Elena laughed bitterly.
“You looked me in the eyes twelve years ago and told me my baby was dead.””
The room fell silent.
I stared at her.
“Your baby?””
Elena looked at me.
“Yes.””
She lifted the photograph.
A tiny newborn wrapped in a pink blanket.
On the back was a hospital bracelet.
I couldn't read the name.
Elena stepped closer.
“This was my daughter.””
Dad's voice was barely audible.
“What happened?””
Elena looked at him.
“The hospital told me my baby didn't survive.””
She touched the photograph.
“They said she was born with complications. They said there was nothing they could do.””
I felt tears forming.
“But there was.””
Elena nodded.
“There was.””
She looked at Victor.
“He knows.””
Victor closed his eyes.
Dad turned toward him.
“Start talking.””
Victor remained silent.
Dad slammed his palm against the table.
“Now.””
Victor flinched.
“The hospital made a mistake.””
Elena shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Denise.
“It wasn't a mistake after they discovered it.””
Denise began crying.
Dad slowly turned.
“What did you do?””
Denise covered her mouth.
Elena stepped inside.
“You paid someone.””
Denise shook her head.
“I didn't know what else to do.””
“You stole my daughter.””
“No.””
“You stole twelve years from me.””
“I didn't know she was yours.””
Elena's face hardened.
“You knew there was another mother.””
Denise looked at the floor.
Dad stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Elena answered.
“There were two babies born that night.””
Dad looked at me.
Elena continued.
“One was yours.””
She pointed at me.
“And one was mine.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Then how did I end up with him?””
Elena's eyes filled.
“Because the babies were switched.””
Dad whispered, “Accidentally.””
“At first.””
Everyone went still.
Elena looked at Victor.
“You knew about the switch.””
Victor nodded.
“You discovered it.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Victor looked at Denise.
“She found out.””
Dad's eyes narrowed.
“When?””
“Three days after the births.””
Elena stepped forward.
“I was already discharged.””
My voice came out thin.
“What happened to the other baby?””
Elena looked at me.
“She was alive.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She was alive.””
Elena's voice broke.
“The hospital had told me she was dead. But she wasn't.””
Dad stared at Victor.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing.””
Victor looked ashamed for the first time.
“I was young. I was working for the hospital administration. I was told the situation would be handled.””
“By whom?””
Victor hesitated.
“Denise.””
Dad turned toward his wife.
“Why?””
Denise sank into a chair.
“Because I found out Arthur's daughter had died.””
I stared at her.
“She was dead?””
Denise nodded.
“The baby you were supposed to take home.””
Dad's eyes filled with horror.
“You knew my biological daughter died?””
“Yes.””
“And you let me take Elena's daughter?””
Denise began sobbing.
“I couldn't lose you.””
“You stole another woman's child.””
“I loved her.””
“You didn't love her!””
Dad's shout shook the room.
“You spent six years making her feel worthless.””
Denise covered her face.
“I was angry.””
“At a baby?””
“At everything!””
She stood suddenly.
“I had lost my own child too!””
Dad froze.
Elena's expression softened for one second.
Then hardened again.
“You didn't lose her.””
Denise stared at her.
“You kept her.””
I felt dizzy.
All those years.
The clothes.
The money.
The lies.
The hospital.
The fear.
It wasn't just about inheritance.
It wasn't even just about Dad.
Denise had known I wasn't biologically hers.
And instead of telling the truth, she had built a cage around me.
Elena came closer.
“Maya…”
I stepped back.
She stopped.
“I know this is too much.””
“You're saying you're my mother.””
“Yes.””
“But you gave birth to me?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Dad.
“And my biological father?””
Elena's face changed.
“He's alive.””
Dad immediately said, “Who?””
Elena didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at the photograph.
“My husband died believing our daughter was dead.””
My chest tightened.
“He died?””
She nodded.
“Three years after you were born.””
“Then who has been looking for me?””
Elena looked at Victor.
Victor finally spoke.
“Your biological father isn't the man you were told.””
Dad stared.
“What?””
Victor looked at me.
“The man whose DNA matched yours three weeks ago isn't Elena's husband.””
Elena shook her head.
“He was my husband's brother.””
Silence.
I couldn't process it.
“So he's my uncle?””
Victor nodded.
“Yes.””
Dad stared at the DNA report.
“Then why does it say biological father?””
Victor's face went pale.
“Because the database match was incomplete.””
Dad looked at him.
“Meaning?””
“The man listed as your biological father isn't your father.””
Elena stepped forward.
“He's your half-brother.””
My knees nearly gave out.
Dad caught my shoulders.
“Sit down.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I stared at Elena.
“Then who is my father?””
Elena opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Victor answered.
“We don't know.””
My father looked furious.
“You don't know?””
“Not yet.””
Dad's phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
“Daniel?””
His attorney's voice came through.
Dad's expression changed.
“What?””
A pause.
“No.””
Another pause.
“Send it.””
He hung up.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“The DNA report Denise showed us was altered.””
Denise froze.
Dad held up his phone.
“The original lab sent my attorney a correction.””
Victor closed his eyes.
Elena whispered, “What did it say?””
Dad looked at me.
“You are biologically related to Elena.””
Elena began crying.
Dad continued.
“But there is another match.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
Dad looked toward Denise.
She whispered—
“Don't.””
Dad's face hardened.
“Tell her.””
Denise shook her head.
“Maya doesn't need to know.””
“I think she does.””
Denise sank into the chair.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“The second match is mine.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Denise began crying.
“The DNA proves I am your biological mother.””
Elena gasped.
“No.””
Victor's face went blank.
Dad whispered, “That's impossible.””
May you like
Denise looked at me.
“I gave birth to you.””
