Chapter 2: The Money Was Never Hers

I read the message seven times.
The buyer didn't pay her.
I typed a response.
Who is this?
No answer.
I called the number. It rang once, then went straight to voicemail.
I tried again.
The same thing happened.
My room suddenly felt too small. Downstairs, the refrigerator hummed, and the television played a cheerful commercial about a family buying its first home.
Everything sounded normal.
That was the worst part.
I walked downstairs with my phone in my hand.
Monica was arranging flowers in a glass vase on the kitchen island. Kayla sat at the breakfast bar, scrolling through comments on the pictures she'd posted beside her new Mercedes.
"Where's the sale receipt?"" I asked.
Monica didn't look up.
"Still on this?""
"Who bought my car?""
"A private buyer.""
"What's their name?""
"Why?""
"Because I own the car.""
She set a white rose into the vase.
"Olivia, I'm not going to spend my afternoon answering the same questions over and over.""
"Then answer them once. Who bought it?""
Kayla lowered her phone.
"Mom, she's making me nervous.""
I turned toward her.
"You should be nervous. You knew my car was being sold before I even got home.""
Kayla rolled her eyes.
"I didn't arrange anything. I just needed a car.""
"You needed a ninety-six-thousand-dollar Mercedes?""
"Yes, actually.""
She said it without hesitation.
"I've worked hard. I deserve something nice.""
I looked at her salon uniform draped over a chair, then at the designer handbag beside her.
"How much money do you make in a month?""
"That's none of your business.""
"Neither was my car, apparently.""
Monica put down the flowers.
"That's enough. Kayla has been saving for this for a long time.""
I stared at her.
"With what money?""
"Her own money.""
"Then why did you tell me you handled the purchase?""
For the first time, Monica seemed to realize that her explanations weren't lining up.
She recovered quickly.
"I helped her arrange the financing. You don't understand how these things work.""
"Then show me the sale documents.""
"No.""
The answer came too fast.
I felt a cold certainty settle in my chest.
"Because you don't have them?""
Monica's jaw tightened.
"I have every document I need.""
"Then let me see them.""
She reached for her phone.
"If you continue harassing me, I'll call your father and tell him you're having some kind of breakdown.""
I almost admired the speed with which she turned herself into the victim.
Almost.
Instead, I opened the message from the unknown number and held up my screen.
"Someone says the buyer never paid you.""
The color drained from Monica's face.
It lasted less than a second.
Then she laughed.
"Someone is playing a stupid prank.""
"Who?""
"How would I know?""
"Why did you look frightened?""
"I didn't.""
Kayla slid off her stool.
"Mom, what's she talking about?""
"Nothing, sweetheart.""
I looked between them.
The same words. The same practiced reassurance.
Nothing.
Sweetheart.
Don't worry.
It was the language of people who expected everyone else to stop asking questions.
I went back upstairs and opened my laptop.
I checked my bank account first. My savings were untouched, which meant Monica hadn't accessed my account directly. Then I checked my insurance portal.
My policy still listed the Honda as my active vehicle.
I called the insurer.
After verifying my identity, the representative confirmed that the policy had not been canceled.
"Has anyone submitted a transfer request?"" I asked.
"Not through us, ma'am.""
"Could someone sell the vehicle without my signature?""
"That depends on the title and the state requirements, but the registered owner's authorization would generally be necessary.""
I thanked her and ended the call.
My title had been kept in my desk.
My stepmother had been in my room several times while cleaning.
A thought made my stomach turn.
I opened the drawer where I kept an old notebook filled with account passwords and personal reminders. I hadn't written my banking password there, but I'd kept the answers to a few security questions on a page tucked inside the back cover.
The page was missing.
I stared at the torn binding.
Monica had been in my room.
She'd had access to my personal documents.
And now my car was gone.
I took photographs of the empty folder and the damaged notebook. Then I emailed them to myself with the date and time.
I didn't know whether I was documenting a family argument or the beginning of a criminal case.
I only knew I couldn't afford to trust anyone in the house.
At six-thirty, I heard Dad's truck pull into the driveway.
I rushed downstairs.
He entered carrying his work bag, loosened his tie, and smiled when he saw me.
"Hey, kiddo. What's going on? You sounded upset.""
Before I could answer, Monica appeared from the kitchen.
"Thank goodness you're home," she said.
"Olivia has been accusing me of all kinds of horrible things.""
Dad's smile disappeared.
"What things?""
"She's upset because we helped Kayla upgrade her car.""
Dad looked at me.
"Upgrade?""
"My Honda is gone," I said.
"Monica sold it without asking me.""
Dad put his work bag on the floor.
"She did what?""
Monica sighed as if the conversation exhausted her.
"It was an old car. Kayla needed transportation, and we found a reasonable solution.""
"With whose permission?"" Dad asked.
Monica opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Then she gestured toward the window.
"Look at the Mercedes. Kayla is safer in a newer vehicle.""
Dad stared at the SUV.
"How much did it cost?""
Kayla, who had been standing on the stairs, answered before her mother could.
"Ninety-six thousand eight hundred dollars.""
Dad turned slowly.
"Excuse me?""
"It's a luxury SUV," Kayla said.
"The price is normal for the model.""
"That wasn't my question.""
His voice had changed. It was quieter now, which was how I knew he was angry.
Monica approached him.
"Richard, please don't turn this into a family crisis. The financing has been arranged.""
Dad reached into his pocket for his phone.
"By whom?""
"By me.""
"Using whose money?""
She placed a hand on his arm.
"We'll talk about that privately.""
He moved away from her.
"No. If this involves Olivia's car and a purchase worth almost a hundred thousand dollars, we're talking about it now.""
His phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen, expecting an ordinary notification.
Instead, he went completely still.
I watched his thumb hover above the display.
Then he opened his banking application.
"What is it?"" I asked.
Dad didn't answer.
He turned the phone toward himself, enlarged the transaction details, and read the amount again.
*$96,800.00 — PRESTIGE LUXURY MOTORS.*
The payment had been made from his personal checking account.
He scrolled down.
The transaction was marked as authorized through a purchasing profile he didn't recognize.
His face had gone pale.
"Monica," he said slowly, "why was ninety-six thousand eight hundred dollars paid to Prestige Luxury Motors from my personal account?""
The kitchen became silent.
Kayla's phone slipped from her hand and struck the counter.
Monica blinked.
"Richard, I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
"It was a misunderstanding.""
"A misunderstanding?"" Dad repeated.
"Someone spent almost a hundred thousand dollars from my account.""
She reached for his phone.
"Let me see.""
He pulled it away.
"Don't touch it.""
Her hand dropped.
I had never seen my father speak to her that way.
He opened the transaction details again.
"I never authorized this payment. I never approved this purchase. And I've never heard of the purchasing profile listed here.""
Monica shook her head.
"You must have forgotten. We discussed upgrading Kayla's transportation months ago.""
"No, we didn't.""
"Richard, you work constantly. You forget conversations.""
"I remember discussing a used car with Kayla. I remember telling her that if she wanted something expensive, she needed to pay for it herself.""
Kayla stepped forward.
"You said you'd help me!""
"I said I'd help you find something affordable.""
"But Mom said—"
"Kayla, stop.""
His daughter fell silent.
Dad looked back at Monica.
"How did you access my account?""
"I didn't access anything.""
"Then how did this payment happen?""
She took a shaky breath.
"The dealership may have made an error.""
Dad stared at the screen.
"Then why does the transaction say it was authorized through an additional purchasing profile?""
Monica's lips parted.
No words came out.
Dad scrolled further, studying the unfamiliar profile name and the date it had first been created.
His thumb stopped.
"Wait.""
He looked at Monica.
"This profile has been active for months.""
She took a step backward.
Dad's voice dropped to a whisper.
"I never created it.""
Then his phone vibrated again.
An unknown number had sent a message.
Richard, check the paperwork from the Honda sale. Don't let her destroy it.
Dad read the words aloud.
Monica grabbed the edge of the kitchen island.
For the first time since I'd arrived home, she looked genuinely afraid.
Dad raised his eyes to hers.
"What paperwork?""
She said nothing.
He turned to me.
"Olivia, do you have anything showing who owned your car?""
"I had the title in my desk. It's missing.""
His expression hardened.
"Then we'll get a copy.""
He looked back at Monica.
"And you're going to show me every document connected to this transaction.""
She swallowed.
"Richard, please. We need to discuss this before you do anything rash.""
"No," Dad said.
"You've had months to explain whatever you've been doing with my money.""
He opened the message again.
Then he tapped the attached image.
The screen loaded slowly.
A scanned document appeared, showing the details of my Honda's sale.
At the bottom was a signature.
My name.
But the signature wasn't mine.
Dad zoomed in.
His eyes moved from the signature to the date, then to a second name printed beneath it.
A name I recognized immediately.
The person listed as the authorized seller wasn't Monica.
It wasn't me, either.
It was *Richard Bennett—my father.*
He stared at the document as though the screen had turned into a weapon.
"I never signed this," he whispered.
Monica began to cry.
May you like
And Dad, still holding the phone, asked the one question that made her stop.
"Why does this paperwork say I sold Olivia's car three weeks before the dealership received payment from my account?""
