Chapter 4: The Lie She Prepared For Me

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

My father had always told me that silence could say more than words.

I never understood what he meant until that moment.

Because Vanessa was never silent.

She always had something to say.

A reason.

An excuse.

A carefully chosen sentence that made her sound like the victim.

But now, standing in my old bedroom with my father holding the evidence in his hand, she had nothing.

“No,” she finally said.

Her voice was softer than before.

“I wasn’t going to lie.””

My father stared at her.

“Then what were you going to do?””

Vanessa looked around the room.

At the desk.

At the empty walls.

At the boxes that still held pieces of my life.

Then she looked at me.

“I was going to explain.””

“Explain what?””

“That Nia understood.””

I felt a strange numbness spread through me.

“Understood what?””

Vanessa sighed.

Like I was exhausting her.

Like she was tired of defending herself.

“That things change.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

She was still using the same words.

The same excuse.

My father stepped forward.

“No. Answer the question.””

His voice was low.

“Did Nia agree to give up her room?””

Vanessa looked away.

And that tiny movement told me everything.

“No,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

I felt my hands shaking.

“But she was going to tell you I did.””

Vanessa immediately turned toward me.

“That’s not true.””

“Then why didn’t you ask me?””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I stepped closer.

“You never asked.””

My voice became stronger.

“You never sat down with me. You never said, ‘Nia, would you be okay changing rooms?’ You never had a conversation.””

“Nia—”

“You just waited until Dad was gone.””

The room became quiet.

My father looked at Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

She crossed her arms.

“I knew Marcus would make this emotional.””

My father laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“You mean I would care?””

Vanessa looked frustrated.

“That’s not what I meant.””

“It’s exactly what you meant.””

She shook her head.

“You always choose her side.””

Those words hung in the air.

And for a moment, I felt like I was watching something I wasn’t supposed to see.

A marriage cracking open.

My father’s face changed.

“Her side?””

He pointed toward me.

“You mean my daughter’s side?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

My father looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

Because I think he was finally seeing something he had ignored for years.

Not one big terrible moment.

Hundreds of small ones.

The comments.

The decisions.

The times Vanessa had made me feel like I was a problem to manage instead of a person to love.

I looked away.

I didn’t want to watch.

I didn’t want to feel like I was the reason they were fighting.

Then my father spoke.

“Where is the key?””

Vanessa looked confused.

“What?””

“To Nia’s bedroom.””

She hesitated.

“I don’t have it.””

My father looked at the lock.

“Then who does?””

Silence.

Again.

That terrible silence.

My father turned slowly.

“Vanessa.””

She rubbed her forehead.

“Marcus, this is becoming ridiculous.””

“Who has the key?””

She looked toward the floor.

Then finally said:

“Daniel.””

My stomach dropped.

My father’s expression hardened.

“Daniel has a key to my house?””

“No.””

“Then why does he have a key to my daughter’s room?””

Vanessa looked nervous.

“He was helping.””

“With what?””

She didn’t answer.

My father walked toward her.

“Helping with what?””

Her voice became defensive.

“You’re making assumptions.””

“Then correct me.””

She stayed quiet.

That was when I realized something.

Vanessa wasn’t scared because my father was angry.

She was scared because she couldn’t control what happened next.

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone froze.

For a second, I thought someone else had entered.

Then we heard a familiar voice.

“Marcus?””

My father looked toward the hallway.

A man stood there.

Tall.

Dark hair.

Holding a set of keys in his hand.

My blood ran cold.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, why are you here?””

The man looked confused.

“I thought you wanted me to check the measurements.””

Nobody spoke.

My father stared at him.

Then at the keys.

Then back at Vanessa.

“Measurements?””

Daniel looked around.

Then he noticed the tension.

His expression changed.

“Wait.””

He looked at me.

Then at the room.

“What happened?””

My father walked toward him.

“Who are you?””

The man stopped.

“I’m Daniel.””

“I know your name.””

My father’s eyes dropped to the keys.

“Why do you have access to my house?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

And for the first time, he seemed to realize something was wrong.

“She didn’t tell you?””

My father’s face went completely still.

“Tell me what?””

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“Daniel, don’t.””

But it was too late.

Daniel looked between them.

“I thought you already talked to him.””

My father took one step closer.

“Talked to me about what?””

Daniel swallowed.

“The renovation.””

I looked at the room.

The missing pictures.

The empty shelves.

The folder.

The locked door.

Everything suddenly connected.

My father’s voice was quiet.

“What renovation?””

Daniel looked confused.

“The room conversion.””

Nobody moved.

Then my father asked:

“Who told you to convert my daughter’s room?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa looked terrified.

That was when Daniel realized.

He had walked into something much bigger than he expected.

“Vanessa said Marcus approved it.””

My father stared at her.

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Because there it was.

Another lie.

Another piece.

Another thing she had done while he was away.

I felt my chest tighten.

My father didn’t yell.

He didn’t throw anything.

He didn’t do any of the dramatic things people do in movies.

He simply looked at Vanessa like he no longer recognized her.

“You told him I approved?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn’t mean—”

“You used my name.””

“I thought you would agree.””

My father’s voice became colder.

“You thought I would agree to remove my daughter from her bedroom?””

Vanessa looked desperate.

“Marcus, listen—”

“No.””

He raised a hand.

“I’ve been listening for years.””

That sentence made everyone quiet.

Even Vanessa.

My father walked back to me.

He placed the folder on the desk.

Then he looked at the room.

“My daughter’s room is not being converted.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“But Caleb—”

“Caleb has a room.””

“He deserves more.””

“So does Nia.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

Because she knew she had lost the argument.

But then something happened.

Something I never expected.

She smiled.

It was small.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

And so did my father.

“What?”” he asked.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You still don’t know everything.””

The room went silent.

My father frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She walked toward the doorway.

For the first time all morning, she looked confident again.

Because she believed she had one final card to play.

“I think you should ask your daughter why she never told you what happened last month.””

My heart stopped.

My father looked at me.

“What happened last month?””

I opened my mouth.

But no words came out.

Because I knew exactly what Vanessa was talking about.

The one thing I had kept from my father.

The reason I had stopped asking for help.

And the reason Vanessa believed she could get away with everything.

May you like

Because she knew my secret.

And now she was about to use it against me.
