Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth Victoria Buried

Nobody moved.

Victoria stood at the top of the stairs holding the small black recorder.

For the first time, she wasn’t pretending.

No fake kindness.

No forced smile.

No performance.

Just anger.

“You all think I’m the villain.””

She laughed softly.

“But none of you know the whole story.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

Victoria held it back.

“No.””

Her eyes stayed on me.

“This is for Emma.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

“Because your mother wasn’t perfect.””

Grandma’s expression hardened.

“Do not use Sarah’s name.””

Victoria looked at her.

“Why? Because only you’re allowed to remember her?””

She pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother’s voice.

But this recording sounded different.

She sounded upset.

“Victoria, this has gone too far.””

Everyone froze.

Victoria smiled.

“See?””

The recording continued.

“You need to stop contacting Daniel.””

My father looked confused.

“Contacting?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Listen.””

My mother’s voice continued.

“I understand you’re angry, but this isn’t healthy.””

A younger Victoria responded.

“You think you can take everything from me?””

My mother answered:

“I never took anything from you.””

Victoria’s voice became colder.

“You took the life I deserved.””

The recording ended.

Silence.

Victoria looked satisfied.

“There.””

She looked at me.

“Your mother knew.””

I stared.

“Knew what?””

“That I wanted a better life.””

Grandma shook her head.

“No.””

Victoria’s face twisted.

“That’s what she always did.””

“What?””

“She judged me.””

Dad looked at her.

“Victoria.””

She ignored him.

“Sarah had everything. Everyone loved her. Everyone chose her.””

Her voice cracked.

“And nobody ever chose me.””

For a moment, I saw something unexpected.

Not cruelty.

Pain.

Then it disappeared.

Victoria pointed at me.

“Do you know what it feels like to spend years being compared to someone who isn’t even alive?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I understood something.

Victoria was hurt.

But she chose to hurt others.

And that mattered.

Grandma spoke quietly.

“Pain explains behavior.””

Victoria looked at her.

“But it does not excuse it.””

The words stopped her.

Grandma continued.

“You were given a chance to become part of this family.””

Victoria looked away.

“You never wanted me.””

Dad shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

Victoria laughed.

“Really?””

She pointed toward the house.

“Every corner had Sarah’s fingerprints.””

I looked at her.

“And you destroyed them.””

Her eyes met mine.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why?””

She answered immediately.

“Because I was tired of competing with a ghost.””

The words hurt.

Not because they were true.

Because they revealed how small her world had become.

Dad slowly took the recorder from her.

“Where did you get this?””

Victoria hesitated.

Then she smiled.

“Your wife kept everything.””

She looked at me.

“Just like you.””

I realized something.

Victoria wasn’t here because she wanted forgiveness.

She was here because she wanted control again.

“What do you want?””

She looked at me.

“The house.””

I almost laughed.

After everything.

Still the house.

“The house?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Because Sarah left it to you.””

I froze.

Grandma looked at me.

“What?””

Victoria smiled.

“Your mother’s will.””

Dad’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Victoria reached into her bag.

She pulled out a document.

“She left everything to Emma.””

My heart stopped.

“But…”

Grandma whispered.

“She never told us.””

Victoria nodded.

“Because I made sure nobody found it.””

The room went silent.

Dad grabbed the paper.

Then he looked at Victoria.

“You hid her will?””

Victoria didn’t deny it.

And that was the final answer.

The final proof.

The final piece.

Grandma stepped forward.

“Leave.””

Victoria looked at her.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

Victoria smiled sadly.

“You really think this ends with me walking away?””

She looked at me.

“You should ask your grandmother why your mother trusted her…”

A pause.

“…but never trusted your father.””

Dad froze.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria walked toward the stairs.

“I think you should ask her.””

She disappeared into the snow.

And everyone turned toward Grandma Pearl.

Because suddenly…

May you like

There was one secret left.

And Grandma was the only person who knew it.
