Amused

Chapter 2: The Second Account

The bank representative's voice came through Dad's phone, calm and professional, while the entire backyard seemed to hold its breath.

“Mr. Carter, I need to verify something before we continue.””

Dad stared at Vanessa.

“What?””

“The $85,000 transfer is only one part of what we're seeing.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Daniel, don't do this here.””

Dad turned away from her.

“Do what?””

“Make this worse.””

He laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You already made it worse.””

I sat on the patio step, still holding my phone.

My empty college account was open on the screen.

Zero dollars.

I kept staring at it because looking at anything else hurt too much.

Dad walked toward the side of the yard.

“Tell me what other account you're talking about.””

The bank representative continued.

“There appears to have been another transfer from the Carter family savings account.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“How much?””

“$18,400.””

My head lifted.

Dad's eyes opened.

“When?””

“Approximately six weeks ago.””

He turned around.

Vanessa was standing beside the patio table, twisting a napkin between her fingers.

Dad looked at her.

“Eighteen thousand four hundred dollars.””

She whispered, “Daniel…”

“Where did it go?””

“I don't remember.””

“You don't remember?””

“It was a while ago.””

“Six weeks isn't a while ago.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Dad, maybe there's an explanation.””

Dad looked at him.

“Did you know about this?””

Marcus shook his head immediately.

“No.””

Vanessa snapped, “Marcus, go upstairs.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“Mom, I didn't know you took her college money.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I did what I had to do.””

Marcus stared at her.

“For my car?””

She didn't answer.

He looked at the sports car through the glass doors.

The excitement had completely disappeared from his face.

“Mom…”

Dad turned back toward the phone.

“Can you tell me where the $18,400 went?””

The representative paused.

“It's difficult to see the final recipient without additional verification, but I can tell you it was transferred to an account ending in 7721.””

Dad frowned.

“That's not mine.””

I stood.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

“Do you know that account?””

“No.””

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward the house.

I noticed.

So did Dad.

He slowly lowered the phone.

“Vanessa.””

She said nothing.

“Is that your mother's account?””

“No.””

He stared at her.

“Look at me.””

She did.

Her eyes were wet.

“No.””

Dad walked toward her.

“You're lying.””

She flinched.

“I am not.””

He held out his hand.

“Unlock your phone.””

“Why?””

“Because I want to see the transfers.””

“You have no right—”

“This is a family account.””

“It is my phone.””

Dad's voice became quiet.

“Then I'll call the bank and freeze everything.””

Vanessa went still.

I watched her face.

Something was there.

Not guilt.

Fear.

A deeper kind of fear.

Dad noticed too.

“Unlock it.””

She slowly entered her passcode.

Dad took the phone.

He opened the banking application.

At first, he said nothing.

Then he scrolled.

His face became harder with every movement of his thumb.

“What is this?””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“Daniel…”

He held the phone up.

“Why are there payments to a private school?””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Dad continued.

“Tuition deposit. Uniforms. Registration.””

He looked at Marcus.

“Were you planning to go to a private college?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Dad scrolled again.

“There are hotel charges.””

Vanessa whispered, “Those weren't mine.””

Dad looked at her.

“Your card was used.””

“I don't know.””

“Then who used it?””

She didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

I pointed at the screen.

A payment description caught my attention.

*Harbor Ridge Equestrian Club.*

I knew the name.

Vanessa's mother had always talked about it.

She had wanted to buy a horse.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Isn't that where your mom keeps her horse?””

Her lips parted.

Dad stared at her.

“Horse?””

Vanessa looked away.

Dad laughed bitterly.

“You sent my daughter's college money to your mother so she could buy a horse?””

“It wasn't just a horse!””

“What was it?””

“She needed somewhere to live!””

“Your mother lives in Florida!””

“She was having problems!””

Dad slammed the phone onto the table.

“Then why did you tell me she was staying with your sister?””

Vanessa froze.

Marcus looked between them.

“You lied to Dad?””

She looked at him.

“I was protecting everyone.””

“No,” Dad said.

“You were protecting yourself.””

I felt something shift inside me.

This wasn't just about my college fund anymore.

Dad was finally seeing the pattern.

The little things I had noticed over the years.

The unexplained withdrawals.

The bills Vanessa said were hers.

The times Dad asked why his credit card balance had jumped.

The sudden vacations.

The expensive furniture.

Whenever I questioned anything, Vanessa always had the same answer.

We're a family.

I had started believing maybe I was selfish for asking.

Now I wondered how much of my life had been paid for with money that wasn't hers.

Dad picked up his phone.

“I want every transaction from the last two years.””

The bank representative said something.

Dad nodded.

“Yes. Every account.””

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“Daniel, please don't.””

He turned.

“Why?””

“Because you don't understand.””

“Then explain.””

“I was desperate.””

“For what?””

She shook her head.

“I can't.””

Dad stared at her.

“Then the bank can explain it.””

He ended the call.

Marcus looked at his mother.

“Mom, what did you do?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Everything I did was for this family.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You spent Sophie's money.””

“I was going to replace it.””

“With what?””

Silence.

Marcus looked at the red car.

Then at me.

His expression collapsed.

“I didn't ask for this.””

I looked at him.

“I know.””

“I swear I didn't.””

“I believe you.””

Dad walked inside.

“Both of you, stay here.””

Vanessa followed.

“Daniel—”

He stopped at the kitchen doorway.

“I said stay here.””

She froze.

He disappeared upstairs.

A few minutes later, we heard drawers opening.

Then the sound of something heavy being dragged across the floor.

Marcus sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally he whispered, “How much did you really save?””

“Eighty-five thousand.””

He shook his head.

“That was all for college?””

“Yes.””

“I feel sick.””

I looked at him.

“You should.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know.””

“I know.””

Then we heard Dad shout from upstairs.

Not angry.

Terrified.

“Vanessa!””

She rushed toward the stairs.

Dad appeared at the top holding a small metal box.

He opened it.

Inside were envelopes.

Dozens of them.

He pulled out one.

Then another.

Then another.

He looked down at the dates.

His face went pale.

“Where did you get these?””

Vanessa stopped halfway up the stairs.

“I…”

Dad held up an envelope.

It had my name on it.

*SOPHIE CARTER — COLLEGE FUND*

My stomach dropped.

Dad opened it.

Inside was a bank statement.

But it wasn't from my account.

It was from an account I had never seen before.

Dad stared at the balance.

Then he looked at me.

“Sophie…”

“What?””

He swallowed.

“There was another college account.””

I stared at him.

“What do you mean?””

He looked back at Vanessa.

“And according to this statement, you emptied that one too.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Dad slowly read the final line.

Then his voice cracked.

“Where did the money go?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

May you like

Because the name listed beside the largest transfer wasn't her mother's.

It was *Marcus Carter*.
