Chapter 2: The Woman Who Forgot the Cameras Were Watching

Daniel didn't move immediately.
His breathing was heavy, and his knuckles were reddened from striking me. Vanessa remained pressed against him, her torn blouse clutched to her chest, one hand trembling convincingly against his shoulder.
“Dad, what are you talking about?”” Daniel demanded.
“The security cameras.””
“What cameras?””
“The system I installed a few months ago. The footage is stored securely, and the living room and dining area are covered.””
Vanessa pulled away from him.
“That's disgusting!””
I looked at her.
“What is?””
“You've been recording us without our permission? Daniel, do you hear this? Your father has been spying on us!””
“It's a security system,” I replied.
“It covers the common areas of my house.””
She shook her head violently.
“You recorded me while I was being attacked!””
“No,” I said quietly.
“I recorded what happened in my house.””
Daniel looked from me to his wife.
For the first time, uncertainty appeared on his face.
“Vanessa, did you know he had cameras?””
She opened her mouth, then closed it.
“I don't know. How would I know?””
“Because you were here when the installer came,” I said.
“You even asked whether the cameras recorded sound.””
Her face went pale.
Daniel turned toward her.
“You asked him that?””
“I ask questions about everything! That doesn't mean I knew where they were!””
I felt a dull ache spreading along my jaw. My cheek had begun to swell, and I could taste blood whenever I swallowed.
I needed ice.
I needed a doctor to look at my face.
Most of all, I needed my son to stop looking at me as though I were a criminal.
“Daniel,” I said, “I am not asking you to believe me because I'm your father. I'm asking you to examine the evidence before you destroy our family.””
He swallowed.
“What if the footage doesn't show anything?””
“Then you'll have to decide what that means.””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed his hand.
“Baby, please. He's trying to trap you. He knows he has money and lawyers. He can make anything look however he wants.””
I almost laughed, but the movement hurt too much.
“You were in my living room for less than half an hour, Vanessa. The footage hasn't been edited by anyone. We can review it directly from the system.””
She stared at me.
Then she made a decision.
“Fine,” she said.
“Let's watch it. But when Daniel sees what you've done, don't expect me to forgive either of you.””
Her confidence was returning.
That frightened me more than her screaming had.
I walked slowly toward the hallway, keeping one hand against my cheek. Daniel followed, while Vanessa remained close enough to touch him at every step.
The security monitor was in a small office beside my bedroom. I had used the room for years to manage company paperwork, and the desk still held folders from projects I had completed before retirement.
I sat down carefully.
Daniel stood behind me.
Vanessa stayed in the doorway.
“Why is there a camera in the living room?”” she demanded.
“To monitor the entrance and the main floor.””
“And the dining room?””
“Because it's connected to the living room.””
“You've been recording private family conversations?””
“I installed a security system on my property. We can discuss the legal questions with my attorney if necessary.””
She gave a sharp laugh.
“Of course. Your attorney. You always have somebody ready to protect you.””
Daniel touched her shoulder.
“Vanessa, please. Let him show us.””
She looked at him as though he had betrayed her.
Then she folded her arms and stepped farther into the room.
I opened the security application and selected the living-room camera.
The timestamp appeared in the corner.
2:14 p.m.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Start before I went outside,” he said.
I nodded.
The recording began with the three of us sitting in the living room. Daniel was on the sofa, looking at his phone. Vanessa was speaking about the house.
I let the footage run until Daniel's phone rang.
There he was, standing and walking toward the front door.
There was Vanessa, watching him leave.
Then she turned toward the dining table.
Daniel's expression tightened.
“Pause it.””
I pressed the button.
The image froze with Vanessa standing alone in the living room.
“What?”” she demanded.
“Nothing,” Daniel said.
“I just want to see what happens.””
I resumed playback.
Vanessa placed her purse on the coffee table. She looked toward the front door, then toward the kitchen.
She walked to the doorway and glanced down the hall.
Then she returned to the living room.
Her movements were unhurried.
She wasn't injured.
She wasn't frightened.
She wasn't even upset.
Daniel leaned closer to the screen.
“That's before she started talking to you,” he murmured.
“Yes,” I replied.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Skip ahead. This is ridiculous.””
“No,” Daniel said.
She froze.
He had never spoken to her in that tone before.
I continued playing the footage.
Vanessa entered the kitchen. I followed a few moments later, carrying my glass.
The camera captured us standing several feet apart.
There was no physical contact.
No grabbing.
No struggle.
The audio was clear enough to hear her voice.
“You're going to regret this,” she said.
Then came my response.
“Is that a threat?””
And her answer.
“It's a promise.””
Daniel slowly straightened.
“Vanessa?””
She shook her head.
“He's taken everything out of context.””
“It's a recording,” Daniel replied.
“You don't understand what was happening!””
“Then explain it.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
The footage continued.
On-screen, Vanessa reached for her hair.
Daniel's face lost its color.
“Wait,” he whispered.
I didn't stop the recording.
He watched his wife pull her own hair loose, tear at her blouse, and drop to her knees.
Then he heard her scream.
“DANIEL! HELP ME! YOUR FATHER IS ATTACKING ME!””
Daniel took a step backward.
The image showed me standing motionless beside the table, my hands open.
The image showed Vanessa crawling toward the front door.
The image showed Daniel rushing inside.
And then the recording captured the moment my son struck me.
He flinched as if someone had hit him again.
“Turn it off,” he whispered.
I paused the recording.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel turned toward his wife.
“Tell me what I just watched.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I was scared.””
“You pulled your own hair.””
“He was threatening me!””
“Dad was standing across the room!””
“You don't know what he said when the camera wasn't pointing at him!””
Daniel stared at her.
“It's pointing directly at both of you.””
She stepped toward the desk.
“Richard could have edited it!””
“The footage is stored on the security system,” I replied.
“The original recording is still there.””
“You're a liar!””
“Vanessa,” Daniel said sharply.
She turned on him.
“Don't you dare take his side!””
Daniel's mouth opened, but no words emerged.
I understood something then.
My son wasn't simply deciding whether to believe me.
He was realizing that he had acted on his wife's accusation without asking a single question.
He had seen a woman crying and a father standing nearby. He had chosen a side before he knew what had happened.
And he had punched me.
“Daniel,” I said softly, “look at the screen again.””
He did.
The recording was paused at the moment Vanessa had torn her blouse.
I advanced it a few seconds.
She was still on her knees, clutching her chest and screaming.
Then I advanced it again.
The front door swung open.
Daniel entered the room.
Vanessa looked directly at him.
But before she reached for his trousers, before she began sobbing against his chest, something happened.
Something so small that I hadn't noticed it during my first viewing.
On the screen, Vanessa glanced toward the camera mounted near the bookshelf.
Her crying stopped.
Her eyes narrowed.
Then she looked at Daniel and began screaming even louder.
I froze the image.
“Daniel,” I said, “look at her face.””
He leaned toward the monitor.
For a moment, he appeared unable to breathe.
“That can't be right,” he whispered.
Vanessa lunged toward the desk.
“Give me that tablet!””
Daniel caught her wrist before she reached it.
“Don't touch it!””
She yanked her arm free.
“You're letting him destroy our marriage over some stupid video?””
Daniel stared at her.
“You destroyed it when you lied to me.””
She began crying again, but this time he didn't move to comfort her.
I watched my son look at the frozen image of his wife.
Then he turned to me.
“Dad,” he said, his voice breaking, “I'm sorry.””
I wanted to reach for him.
I wanted to tell him that one terrible mistake didn't have to erase thirty-five years of being his father.
But my cheek was swelling, my lip was bleeding, and I could still feel the impact of his fist.
“I'm glad you saw the truth,” I said.
“But you need to understand something. An apology doesn't undo what you did.””
He lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
“No, son. I don't think you do.””
Vanessa made a strangled sound.
“Daniel, please. I was upset. I didn't know what I was doing.””
He turned toward her.
“You deliberately made me believe my father attacked you.””
“I was trying to protect myself!””
“From what?””
She glanced at me.
Then at the monitor.
Then toward the hallway.
For the first time, I saw genuine fear in her eyes.
Not fear of being hurt.
Fear of being exposed.
Daniel took a slow breath.
“We're leaving,” he said.
Vanessa stared at him.
“What?””
“I'm taking you home. We're going to talk about this.””
“You can't be serious.””
“I am.””
She grabbed her purse from the desk.
“Fine. But don't think this is over.””
She marched out of the room, her heels striking the floor.
Daniel stayed behind.
He looked at my swollen cheek and the blood on my shirt.
“Dad, I should call an ambulance.””
“I'm going to have it checked.””
“Let me take you.””
I shook my head.
“Not right now.””
His face crumpled.
“Please don't shut me out.””
I looked at the boy who had once fallen asleep in my arms during thunderstorms, the teenager who had called me from a school trip because he missed home, the man who had stood beside his mother’s grave and promised he would always look after me.
“I didn't shut you out, Daniel,” I said.
“You chose to stop listening.””
He wiped his face.
Then he walked toward the door.
Just before leaving, he turned back.
“Dad, there's something I need to tell you about Vanessa.””
I waited.
He glanced toward the hallway to make sure she couldn't hear him.
“Two weeks ago, I found a letter in her purse. It had your name on it.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of letter?””
May you like
Daniel swallowed.
“A letter from a bank. And it said something about a loan secured against your property.””
