Amused

Chapter 7: The Nurse Who Remembered Everything

I read the message three times before I could understand what it meant.

*Ask the nurse who was on duty the night your husband died. She remembers what your son did.*

My fingers went numb around the phone.

For eleven years, I had carried the memory of Robert's final night like a stone inside my chest. I remembered the hospital room, the antiseptic smell, the soft beep of the monitors, and the nurse who had brought me coffee when I was too exhausted to stand.

I remembered Daniel sitting beside the window, his head bowed, while I held my husband's hand.

But I had never imagined that someone might be keeping a secret about that night.

And I certainly had never imagined that the secret involved my son.

"Richard," I whispered.

He turned from the window.

"What is it?""

I handed him my phone.

He read the message, then examined the number from which it had been sent.

"Don't reply yet," he said.

"We need to preserve this.""

Daniel stood behind us, his face almost gray.

"Let me see.""

I hesitated before handing him the phone.

The moment he read the message, he stumbled backward.

"No," he whispered.

I caught his arm.

"Daniel, what does this mean?""

He shook his head.

"Nothing. It's a lie.""

"Then why do you look as though you've seen a ghost?""

He pressed both hands against his mouth.

Richard stepped closer.

"Daniel, do you know something about your father's final night?""

My son looked at me.

For a moment, I thought he would tell us everything.

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa's name flashed across the screen.

He rejected the call.

It rang again.

He rejected it a second time.

On the third call, a message appeared.

Daniel looked at it and began to tremble.

"What does she want?"" I asked.

He turned the phone toward me.

*Come outside. We need to talk about Dad before your mother destroys both of us.*

I looked at Richard.

"She knows about the message.""

"Or she's trying to make him believe she does," he replied.

Daniel shook his head.

"She knows everything.""

"Everything about what?"" I demanded.

He backed away from me.

"Mom, please. I can't do this.""

"You can, and you will. Someone is threatening me with information about your father's death. If you know something, I deserve to hear it.""

His eyes filled with tears.

"I never wanted him to die.""

The words seemed to suck all the air from the room.

Richard went still.

I felt my knees weaken.

"What did you just say?""

Daniel covered his face.

"I didn't mean it like that.""

"Then tell me what you meant.""

He paced to the window and back, running his hands through his hair.

"I was twenty-nine. Dad and I had an argument. A terrible one. I said things I shouldn't have said.""

"About what?""

"Money.""

I stared at him.

"Your father gave you money.""

"I know.""

"He helped you buy your first car. He paid part of your college tuition when your scholarship fell short. He never stopped helping you.""

"I know, Mom!""

His voice cracked.

"That's what makes it so bad.""

Richard pulled a chair toward him.

"Sit down, Daniel. Start at the beginning.""

Daniel sank into the chair.

"The day before Dad's stroke, I came to the house. I needed money. I had made some bad decisions with a business I was trying to start, and I owed someone more than I could afford.""

My stomach tightened.

"How much?""

"About thirty thousand dollars.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Dad had already warned me about the people I was dealing with.""

I remembered Robert's letter.

I have reason to believe that someone close to our family may have been drawn into this arrangement.

"Was it the same investment scheme Vanessa is involved in now?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know. The person I owed money to was connected to a group that bought distressed properties. Dad recognized the company name when I showed him the paperwork.""

Richard leaned forward.

"What company?""

Daniel gave him the name.

Richard wrote it down.

"Go on.""

"Dad told me to stay away from them. He said their contracts weren't legitimate, and he believed they were using people's property records to secure loans without permission.""

My heart began to pound.

"He knew about the scheme.""

"Yes.""

"What happened next?""

Daniel stared at the floor.

"I told him I needed the money immediately. He refused to give it to me. He said he wouldn't pay off a debt if I kept making the same mistakes.""

I remembered Robert's stubbornness. He had always believed that helping someone meant teaching them to stand on their own feet, not carrying them forever.

"I got angry," Daniel continued.

"I accused him of caring more about his money than his son.""

Tears rolled down his cheeks.

"He told me that if I wanted to become a man, I had to take responsibility for my choices.""

I closed my eyes.

That sounded exactly like Robert.

"I left," Daniel said.

"But I came back the next morning.""

"Why?""

"Because I found out the people I owed money to had contacted Dad.""

Richard stopped writing.

"What did they want?""

"I don't know. Dad wouldn't tell me. He said he'd already spoken to someone who could help him report what was happening.""

I stared at my son.

"And you didn't tell me any of this?""

"I was ashamed.""

"Daniel, your father was dead within twenty-four hours.""

He began to sob.

"I know.""

I gripped the back of a chair.

"Tell me what happened at the hospital.""

He wiped his face.

"I arrived before you. The ambulance had already taken Dad in. They told me he had suffered a massive stroke.""

"Yes.""

"I stayed with him while they ran tests. A nurse came in and said he needed medication to control his blood pressure. She asked me to step outside while they treated him.""

My mouth went dry.

"What did you do?""

"Nothing. I waited in the corridor.""

Richard's voice was careful.

"How long?""

"Maybe fifteen minutes.""

"And then?""

Daniel stared at his hands.

"When the nurse came out, she asked whether I was his son. I said yes. She told me the doctors were concerned about his condition.""

I remembered that nurse.

Her name had been Claire. Claire Donovan.

She had kind eyes and a quiet voice. She had stayed late on the final night because the ward was short-staffed.

"What happened after that?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

"I went into Dad's room.""

My heart hammered.

"He was still unconscious. I sat beside him and told him I was sorry.""

I felt tears burn my eyes.

"Did you touch anything?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"Did you give him anything?""

"No!""

The word burst out of him.

"I swear to you, Mom. I didn't hurt Dad.""

I searched his face.

I wanted to believe him.

But I could not ignore the terror in his eyes or the way Vanessa had threatened to expose what happened that night.

"Then why is she saying a nurse remembers what you did?""

Daniel looked toward the door.

"Because I took something from his room.""

The room fell silent.

Richard lowered his pen.

"What did you take?""

Daniel swallowed.

"A folder.""

"What folder?""

"The one Dad had brought from home. It was in his briefcase beside the bed.""

My stomach tightened.

"What was in it?""

"Bank statements. Property records. Copies of contracts. He had been investigating the people I owed money to.""

"Why did you take it?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"That the people involved would discover I'd told Dad everything. I thought if I took the papers, I could stop them from using his investigation against me.""

I stared at him.

"You stole your father's evidence while he was lying unconscious in a hospital bed?""

Daniel covered his face.

"Yes.""

The answer broke something inside me.

Not because he had stolen papers.

Because Robert had been fighting to protect his family from people who were exploiting others, and his own son had been more concerned about protecting himself.

"Where is the folder now?""

"I gave it to Vanessa.""

"When?""

"After we got married. She found it among my old things and recognized the company names.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?""

"Because she said she had already copied everything. She said if I ever tried to leave her, she would tell the police I had stolen evidence and interfered with Dad's medical treatment.""

Richard sat back.

"Taking documents from a hospital room isn't the same as harming a patient. But we need to establish exactly what was taken and whether anything was altered or concealed.""

"I know.""

"Do you?""

Daniel looked at him.

Richard's voice grew firm.

"Because every time someone asks you a question, you reveal another piece of information that should have been disclosed earlier. Your mother has a right to know what happened to her husband. She also has a right to protect herself from the consequences of your decisions.""

Daniel nodded, crying silently.

I walked to the window.

Vanessa's SUV was gone.

The street outside looked peaceful, almost offensively ordinary. A neighbor was walking a golden retriever. Across the road, a man was unloading groceries from his car.

The world had not changed.

But everything I believed about my family had.

"Richard," I said, "how do we find Claire Donovan?""

He opened his notebook.

"We can start by contacting the hospital's records department. If she's still employed there, we can ask whether she is willing to speak with us. If she has retired, the hospital may be able to forward a request, subject to privacy rules.""

I nodded.

"Do it.""

Daniel stood.

"Mom, there's one more thing.""

I turned.

He reached into his coat pocket and removed a small brass key.

"I found this inside Dad's folder before I gave it to Vanessa.""

Richard's eyes widened.

"Where did you get it?""

"It was taped inside the back cover of a notebook. I kept it because I thought it might be important.""

He placed it on the desk.

I recognized the shape immediately.

It was almost identical to the key we had found in Robert's envelope.

But this one had a number stamped on its head.

*214.*

Richard picked it up.

"That matches the safe-deposit box number.""

Daniel nodded.

"Dad told me once that if anything happened to him, I should make sure you had access to everything he left behind.""

I stared at the key.

"Why didn't you give it to me years ago?""

His face crumpled.

"Because I was afraid you'd discover what I'd done.""

I looked at him for a long time.

Then I said, "You need to come with us to the bank tomorrow.""

He nodded.

"I will.""

"And after that, you're going to speak to your own attorney. You need someone who can advise you independently, because you may have to answer difficult questions about what happened at the hospital and the documents you took.""

"I understand.""

I wasn't sure he did.

But for the first time, he wasn't asking me to hand over my keys or protect him from the truth.

He was agreeing to face it.

Richard gathered the documents and placed them inside his briefcase.

"We'll leave for the bank when it opens. In the meantime, no one should contact Vanessa or attempt to confront her.""

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered cautiously.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke.

"Is this Margaret Mercer?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Claire Donovan. I used to be a nurse at St. Matthew's Medical Center.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"Claire?""

"I received a message from an attorney asking whether I'd be willing to discuss a patient I cared for eleven years ago. Your husband, Robert Mercer.""

I closed my eyes.

"Yes. That's right.""

There was a long pause.

Then she said, "Mrs. Mercer, I have been waiting a very long time for someone to ask me about that night.""

My throat tightened.

"What do you remember?""

Her voice dropped.

"I remember your son leaving your husband's room with a folder. But that isn't why I'm calling.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"Then why are you calling?""

Claire took a shaky breath.

"Because before your husband died, he woke up briefly. He was conscious long enough to speak to me.""

My heart stopped.

"What did he say?""

She was silent for several seconds.

Then she whispered, "He told me that if anything happened to him, I needed to make sure you knew one thing.""

I could barely breathe.

"What thing?""

"He said the person responsible for the financial fraud was already inside your family.""

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

Richard looked up sharply.

Claire continued.

"And Mrs. Mercer, there is something else you need to know about the night your husband died.""

I closed my eyes.

"What?""

Her next words changed everything.

"Your husband was scheduled to be transferred to another hospital that morning. The transfer was canceled after someone called the attending physician and claimed you had refused consent.""

I stared at Richard.

"I never refused anything.""

"I know," Claire said quietly.

"That's why I kept copies of the records.""

My knees weakened.

"Where are they?""

"I've kept them in a locked cabinet since that night. I was afraid to release them without proper authorization, but I'm willing to speak with your attorney.""

"Why didn't you contact me before now?""

Her voice broke.

"Because I was threatened, Mrs. Mercer.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"By whom?""

Claire hesitated.

Then she said, "A woman who identified herself as Monica Vale.""

Richard stood abruptly.

I could hear Claire breathing on the other end of the line.

"Mrs. Mercer, if you want to understand what happened to your husband, you need to come tomorrow morning. Bring your attorney.""

"I will.""

"And please be careful. The person who contacted me last week knew where I live.""

The call ended.

For several seconds, I stood motionless.

Then I turned toward Richard.

"Monica Vale threatened a nurse eleven years ago.""

Richard closed his briefcase.

"And now Monica Vale's name appears in the documents connected to your daughter-in-law.""

Daniel sank into the chair.

"Oh, God.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He pulled out his phone and opened an old message thread.

"I found this when Vanessa was asleep last night. It's from Monica.""

He showed us the screen.

The message was dated three days earlier.

*The old woman must sign by Friday. If she refuses, proceed with the guardianship. The house is the only asset we can secure before the records become public.*

Below it was Vanessa's reply.

*And if she discovers what happened to Robert?*

Monica's response was chillingly brief.

*Then make sure no one believes her.*

I stared at the screen.

The house was never merely a place for Vanessa to stay.

It was an asset someone needed to secure before the truth came out.

And Robert's death might be connected to the very scheme that had destroyed Daniel's finances.

Richard took photographs of the messages.

"We need to preserve these and give them to the authorities," he said.

"Tomorrow, we will retrieve whatever records are available and establish the next steps.""

I nodded.

Then another message appeared on Daniel's phone.

This one came from Vanessa.

*I know you've spoken to your mother. You have until midnight to bring me the safe-deposit key. If you don't, I'll release the hospital recording.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

I looked at the brass key on Robert's desk.

Then I looked at my son.

"Does she know we have the key?""

He shook his head.

"Not yet.""

I picked it up and closed my fingers around it.

"Then we have until midnight to find out what your father was trying to protect.""

But as I slipped the key into my pocket, Richard's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds, his expression growing increasingly grim.

When he hung up, he looked at me.

"Margaret, there's a problem.""

"What is it?""

"The bank has confirmed that safe-deposit box 214 still exists.""

I exhaled in relief.

"Good.""

Richard shook his head.

"There's a second key on file. And according to the bank's records, someone accessed that box three days ago.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

He looked at Daniel.

May you like

Then back at me.

"Monica Vale.""
