Amused

Chapter 5: The Person Who Was Watching Me

The message stayed on my screen for almost a full minute.

I didn’t blink.

I didn’t breathe.

I just stared at the words until they stopped looking like a sentence and started looking like a threat.

*Ask your husband who he paid to watch you.*

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who sent that?”” Mark asked again.

“I don’t know.””

My voice sounded distant.

Like I was hearing myself from another room.

Diane watched me carefully.

Too carefully.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not shock.

Not confusion.

She wasn’t asking what the message said.

She was watching my reaction.

And suddenly, every instinct I had ignored for years screamed at me.

“Diane.””

Her eyes moved to mine.

“What?””

“Did you know someone was watching me?””

Her face changed instantly.

Just a flicker.

But enough.

“No.””

Too fast.

Mark noticed too.

“Why did you answer before she finished asking?””

Diane stood.

“This is ridiculous.””

“No,” I said quietly.

She stopped.

“This is the first thing that has made sense in a long time.””

My fever had not gone away.

My body was still weak.

My muscles still ached.

But something in my mind had finally become clear.

All those little moments.

All those strange coincidences.

The questions Diane asked.

The things she somehow knew.

The way she always seemed to know when Ethan and I argued.

The way she would call exactly when I was leaving work.

I had always assumed Ethan talked to her.

Maybe he did.

But maybe there was more.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at the phone.

Then at Ethan’s name still glowing on the screen.

He was still there.

Still listening.

“Ethan.””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

My stomach twisted.

“Who did you pay to watch me?””

Silence.

Not a confused silence.

Not a shocked silence.

A guilty one.

“Ethan.””

“Ava, you don’t understand.””

I almost laughed.

Those words again.

“You’re right.””

My voice shook.

“I don’t understand.””

I looked at the documents scattered across my bed.

“I don’t understand why my husband lied about where he was.””

Silence.

“I don’t understand why my signature is on paperwork I never signed.””

Silence.

“I don’t understand why your mother has documents from my father’s estate.””

Still nothing.

“And now I don’t understand why someone thinks you paid someone to watch me.””

Mark looked at me.

His expression was grim.

Because he knew.

Ethan knew too.

Finally, Ethan spoke.

“It wasn’t like that.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“I wasn’t spying on you.””

“Then what was it?””

Another pause.

Then he said:

“I hired someone to make sure you were okay.””

I stared at the phone.

The room went quiet.

Even Diane looked surprised.

“You hired someone?””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me?””

“I didn’t want you to worry.””

I closed my eyes.

I felt a strange calm come over me.

The kind that happens when something you feared finally becomes real.

“You hired someone to follow me.””

“No.””

“Then what did you hire them for?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Mark stepped closer.

“Ethan.””

His voice was controlled.

“Tell her.””

A long silence.

Then Ethan said:

“Private security.””

The words felt ridiculous.

“Security?””

“Yes.””

“Why would I need security?””

No answer.

“Ethan.””

His breathing changed.

And then I understood.

“You thought I was in danger.””

“Yes.””

“From who?””

Silence.

I looked at Diane.

She looked away.

My heart started pounding.

“From who?””

Ethan finally said:

“Your father.””

The room froze.

I stared at the phone.

“What?””

Mark’s face changed.

“What did you just say?””

Ethan sounded desperate now.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I whispered.

“I really don’t.””

“My father has been dead for six years.””

“I know.””

“Then how could he be a threat?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

And that was when I realized.

This wasn’t about my father.

Not really.

My father was the excuse.

The story they told themselves.

The reason they used to justify everything.

“You weren’t protecting me,” I said.

“Ava—”

“You were protecting yourself.””

“No.””

“You were afraid I would find something.””

The silence answered.

Diane suddenly spoke.

“Ethan, stop.””

Everyone turned toward her.

It was the first time she had sounded afraid of him.

Not protective.

Afraid.

That caught my attention.

“Why did you tell him to stop?””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t.””

“Yes, you did.””

I looked between them.

“You two have been lying to me for years.””

Diane’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Then explain.””

She didn’t.

Again.

That was becoming her answer.

Mark picked up one of the documents.

“I want to know something.””

Nobody responded.

He looked at Ethan through the phone.

“How long have you known about Ava’s father’s concerns?””

Another silence.

Then:

“Since before the wedding.””

I felt my heart drop.

“Before?””

“Ava—”

“You knew?””

I stared at the phone.

“You knew my father didn’t trust you.””

“Yes.””

“And you still married me?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.

“Why?””

Ethan’s voice became softer.

“Because I loved you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Ava.””

“No.””

I wiped my eyes.

I didn’t even know when I started crying.

“You don’t get to say that after all of this.””

“I do love you.””

“Love doesn’t hide things like this.””

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“Stop saying that.””

My voice cracked.

“Stop telling me I don’t understand when you’re the one who made sure I never could.””

Nobody spoke.

For the first time, Ethan had no explanation.

Then Mark’s phone rang.

He looked down.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He just showed me the screen.

A name appeared.

*Daniel Mercer.*

Diane stood up so quickly the chair nearly fell backward.

“No.””

Mark looked at her.

“You know that name?””

Her face went pale.

“He shouldn’t be calling.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who is Daniel?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Ava…”

I looked at the phone.

“What?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Don’t answer.””

Mark stared at the ringing phone.

Diane looked terrified.

And suddenly, I knew.

Whoever Daniel Mercer was…

He was the person everyone had been trying to keep away from me.

Mark let the phone ring.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then it stopped.

A second later, a voicemail notification appeared.

Mark opened it.

A man’s voice filled the room.

“Ava, this is Daniel Mercer.””

Diane closed her eyes.

Like she already knew what was coming.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

I froze.

Daniel continued.

“Your husband and my sister have been telling you the wrong story for years.””

My breath caught.

My husband.

My mother-in-law.

And now her brother.

Three people.

One secret.

Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.

“Your father didn’t leave you money because he wanted you to be wealthy.””

A pause.

“He left it because he knew Ethan would try to take it.””

I looked at the documents.

At my fake signature.

At the woman who had spent three years criticizing me.

Then Daniel’s final sentence played.

“He also left evidence proving Ethan wasn’t the first person in your marriage who betrayed you.””

The voicemail ended.

Nobody moved.

And then my phone lit up again.

A new message.

From Daniel.

*I have the original document your father wrote before he died. The one Diane tried to destroy.*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another line appeared.

*And Ava… you need to know who signed it.*
