Chapter 6: The Missing Seconds
The recording continued playing in my mind long after the phone screen went dark.
My voice.
My words.
My tone.
Everything sounded real.
That was what made it dangerous.
A fake recording could be exposed.
A bad imitation could be questioned.
But a carefully edited truth could destroy someone.
Claire had not created a lie.
She had created a weapon from reality.
Daniel looked at me.
“You’re saying the recording is real?””
“Yes.””
His eyebrows tightened.
“But you also said it was manipulated.””
“It was.””
He shook his head.
“I don’t understand.””
I looked around at everyone standing in the driveway.
Margaret.
Claire.
The neighbors watching from behind windows.
The people who had already decided what kind of person I was.
A thief.
A manipulator.
A woman who had hidden her past.
I knew I didn’t have much time.
Because once people hear something shocking, they remember the emotion before they remember the facts.
So I turned to Claire.
“Where did you get this recording?””
She smiled.
“Does it matter?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because the answer tells everyone how dishonest you are.””
Her smile faded.
Daniel looked between us.
“Claire, where did you get it?””
Claire didn’t answer.
That silence mattered.
I stepped forward.
“Seven years ago, when we were partners, our company held weekly strategy meetings.””
Claire looked at me carefully.
I continued.
“Every meeting was recorded.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
“Because we handled investor money. Every decision needed documentation.””
I looked at Claire.
“And Claire knew that.””
Her expression remained calm.
“So?””
“So the recording you played came from one of those meetings.””
Margaret looked confused.
“And?””
I opened my binder again.
“The recording was never meant to be private.””
I removed a small device.
A flash drive.
“I kept copies.””
Claire’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You still have them?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“You saved everything?””
I looked at him.
“I told you.””
My voice softened.
“I keep records.””
Claire stepped closer.
“You’re changing the subject.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m finally getting to the subject.””
I held up the flash drive.
“The recording has a timestamp.””
Nobody moved.
“Every meeting file has a date.””
I looked at Claire.
“So does the original.””
Her confidence began disappearing.
“What are you implying?””
“I’m saying you edited a conversation.””
She laughed.
“You can’t prove that.””
“I can.””
I turned to Daniel.
“Do you have a laptop?””
Margaret immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her reaction was too fast.
Daniel noticed.
“Mom?””
She hesitated.
“I just don’t think this needs to become a circus.””
I looked at her.
“A circus?””
I glanced at the wedding dress still hanging from the backseat of my car.
“Yesterday you locked me outside my own investment in front of everyone.””
Then I looked at Claire.
“Today you accuse me of fraud using edited evidence.””
I held the flash drive.
“And now you’re worried about embarrassment?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel went inside.
A few minutes later, he returned with his laptop.
Claire looked nervous now.
Not scared.
Not yet.
But nervous.
That was enough.
I connected the drive.
The folder appeared.
Years of records.
Files.
Dates.
Meetings.
Emails.
I opened one.
“March 18th.””
I looked at Claire.
“The meeting where this recording came from.””
I pressed play.
The same voices filled the driveway.
Mine.
Claire’s.
Several other employees.
Then the sentence appeared.
The sentence everyone had heard.
My voice:
“I can’t believe how easy this is going to be.””
Margaret crossed her arms.
“There.””
I ignored her.
The recording continued.
My voice again.
“I just need Daniel to trust me.””
Daniel looked at me.
I watched the doubt return.
Then I smiled sadly.
“Wait.””
I paused.
The original recording continued.
Five seconds later, another sentence played.
My voice:
“Because if investors don’t trust me, they’ll lose everything. I need someone inside the company I can trust to help expose what Claire has been doing.””
Silence.
Nobody spoke.
Claire’s face went completely still.
I looked at Daniel.
“That was the missing part.””
His expression changed.
The recording continued.
My voice:
“I need Daniel to trust me because he works with city records. He knows how to verify documents. Without someone honest helping me, Claire will get away with this.””
The audio stopped.
The silence afterward was heavier than before.
Margaret slowly looked at Claire.
“You knew?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire?””
Still nothing.
Daniel stared at her.
“What was she talking about?””
Claire’s jaw tightened.
“Nothing.””
I laughed softly.
“Nothing?””
I looked at her.
“You spent years telling people I destroyed the company.””
I stepped closer.
“But the original recording proves I was investigating you.””
Claire finally lost control.
“You were spying on me!””
“No.””
“You didn’t trust me!””
“No.””
“You were trying to ruin me!””
I looked at her.
“You were transferring company funds into an account you controlled.””
Her face turned red.
“You can’t prove intent.””
“Maybe not then.””
I nodded.
“But I can prove something else.””
I opened another file.
“Your emails.””
Claire froze.
Margaret noticed.
“What emails?””
I looked at Claire.
“The ones you accidentally sent to yourself.””
Claire’s expression changed.
Daniel stared.
“Accidentally?””
I nodded.
“She created a folder to organize documents.””
I clicked.
“One of those documents contained instructions from her personal email.””
I looked at Claire.
“Instructions about moving investor money.””
Nobody spoke.
The woman who had spent the last hour attacking my character was suddenly silent.
Daniel looked at her.
“Is that true?””
Claire looked away.
That was the answer.
Not a confession.
But enough.
Margaret stepped back.
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“No, this doesn’t make sense.””
I looked at her.
“Because you believed her.””
Margaret’s face hardened.
“You’re enjoying this.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked at Daniel.
“I’m exhausted.””
That was the truth.
I wasn’t enjoying watching everything collapse.
I wasn’t happy.
I had loved these people.
That was the worst part.
The betrayal wasn’t painful because I lost them.
It was painful because I had believed I had them.
Daniel closed the laptop.
Then he looked at his mother.
“Did you know about Claire?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
“I knew she had information.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
Daniel’s face fell.
“You knew?””
“I was protecting you.””
“From what?””
“From her.””
He looked at me.
Then back at his mother.
“From Emily?””
Margaret didn’t answer.
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
“This entire time…”
His voice broke slightly.
“This entire time you were trying to make me believe she was dangerous?””
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“She is.””
“No.””
The word came quietly.
But everyone heard it.
Daniel shook his head.
“No, Mom.””
That was the first time I heard him say it.
Not as an argument.
Not as a request.
A boundary.
Margaret looked shocked.
“You’re taking her side?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then at the house.
Then at the documents.
“I’m trying to understand the truth.””
Margaret’s face changed.
She looked hurt.
But underneath it was anger.
“You always choose people who leave.””
Daniel went quiet.
That sentence hit something.
A wound.
I could see it.
And I suddenly understood why he had struggled so much to challenge her.
Margaret knew exactly where his weaknesses were.
She had spent years using them.
Claire picked up her bag.
“This is pointless.””
I looked at her.
“Leaving already?””
She glared.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
I smiled.
“I heard that before.””
She walked toward the SUV.
Before opening the door, she stopped.
Then she looked back.
“You think you won because you found one recording?””
I said nothing.
Claire smiled.
“You still don’t know why Margaret brought me here.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Margaret.
Then back at me.
“Ask her.””
I turned.
Margaret looked away.
And suddenly, I noticed something.
She wasn’t angry anymore.
She wasn’t defensive.
She looked almost relieved.
Like this was only the first part.
Claire opened the car door.
“You’re still missing the biggest piece.””
Daniel frowned.
“What piece?””
Claire looked at me.
“The reason your wedding was stopped.””
The door began closing.
Then she said:
“Because Margaret wasn’t trying to keep you out of the house.””
A pause.
“She was trying to keep you away from what’s buried underneath it.””
The SUV door slammed shut.
The vehicle drove away.
And I stood there, staring at the house I had paid to save.
The house where Margaret had locked me outside.
The house where she had hidden documents.
The house where she claimed she was protecting her family.

For the first time, I wondered if the money I spent fixing that place…
had uncovered something that was never supposed to be found.
