Amused

Chapter 3: The Secret My Husband Didn't Know I Knew

I read the message four times.

Then I took a screenshot.

My first instinct was to show Michael.

My second was to keep my mouth shut.

I had spent five months believing Tyler's explanations because I wanted them to be true.

I wasn't going to make that mistake again.

Instead, I opened the message details.

The number wasn't saved in my contacts.

No name.

No photograph.

Nothing.

I typed a reply.

*Who is this?*

The message showed as delivered.

No answer came.

A moment later, Michael entered the room.

"Emily, are you okay?""

I locked my phone.

"Yes.""

He glanced at the carriers.

"How are the girls?""

"Tired.""

He pulled out a chair.

"Rebecca is arranging for you to receive copies of the relevant financial records. We also recommend contacting your bank immediately.""

"I'll do that.""

"Is there anything else?""

I looked at him.

"Why did you wait until today?""

His expression changed.

"What do you mean?""

"Why did you wait until my husband came home before telling me about the investigation?""

Michael sat down.

For several seconds, he didn't answer.

Then he exhaled.

"Because we weren't certain whether you were involved.""

I stared at him.

"Involved?""

"Your name appeared in some of the financial records.""

"My name?""

"An authorization document was submitted using your personal information.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"I didn't authorize anything.""

"We understand that now.""

"Now?""

He rubbed his jaw.

"Emily, there are details I can't discuss until our legal team completes its review.""

I shook my head.

"You can't expect me to trust you when you knew something was happening and let me walk into that terminal with my babies.""

His eyes lowered.

"You're right.""

The answer surprised me.

"I should have contacted you earlier," he continued.

"But I didn't want to make accusations without evidence.""

I leaned back.

"Did you know Tyler was having an affair?""

Michael looked uncomfortable.

"We had reports of inappropriate relationships with passengers and contractors.""

"How many?""

"Several.""

I stared at him.

"Several?""

He nodded.

"Some reports were anonymous.""

"And you didn't think to tell his wife?""

"At the time, we couldn't verify them.""

I looked down at my hands.

My nails were chipped. There was a faint stain from a bottle of infant formula near my wrist.

I had spent the last three months looking after two newborns, and the people who worked with my husband had apparently been discussing his affairs like office gossip.

"Did you know he was taking my money?""

"We discovered the transfers last week.""

"Did you know he was trying to change my account?""

Michael hesitated.

"No. Rebecca found that information this morning.""

I studied his face.

Then I took out my phone.

"I received a message.""

I handed it to him.

He read the words.

His jaw tightened.

"Where did this come from?""

"I don't know.""

He looked at the number.

"Don't reply again.""

"Why?""

"Because if someone is attempting to interfere with an active investigation, we need to know who.""

I folded my arms.

"Michael, I am not a witness you can keep in a room while everyone else decides what happens to my life.""

He nodded.

"I understand.""

"Then tell me everything you can.""

He looked toward the door.

Finally, he pulled his chair closer.

"There's something you should know about Tyler's position.""

I waited.

"Five months ago, before he boarded Ocean Majesty, he requested a transfer to the vessel's executive operations department.""

I nodded.

"He told me about the promotion.""

Michael shook his head.

"It wasn't a promotion. It was a temporary assignment.""

"What's the difference?""

"He was supposed to oversee a restructuring project. His salary increased slightly, but his authority was limited.""

I stared at him.

"That's not what he told me.""

Michael opened his briefcase and removed a printed document.

"According to his employment agreement, Tyler was prohibited from opening any outside business using company resources.""

I looked at the paper.

A signature appeared at the bottom.

Tyler's.

"Why would he open a company?""

"That's what we're investigating.""

I studied the document.

Then something caught my attention.

The date.

The agreement had been signed six days before Tyler left for the cruise.

Six days.

He had already established the business before boarding.

I looked up.

"Michael, do you have the company registration date?""

He nodded.

"Rebecca has it.""

"Can you get it?""

He made a quick phone call.

A few minutes later, Rebecca returned with another document.

"Here.""

I looked at the date.

The company had been registered twelve days before Tyler departed.

I read it again.

Twelve days.

I remembered that period.

Tyler had been unusually affectionate.

He'd taken me to dinner, bought me flowers, and promised that his temporary assignment would give us a better life.

One evening, he'd sat beside me on the sofa, resting his hand on my stomach.

"Just think, Em," he'd said.

"When I come back, we'll finally have everything we need.""

I'd smiled.

"What does everything mean?""

"A bigger house. Better schools. Maybe a family vacation.""

I'd kissed him.

I remembered believing every word.

Now I was looking at a business he'd created before he left.

A business he had never mentioned.

"Was Vanessa involved from the beginning?"" I asked.

Michael looked at Rebecca.

She checked another page.

"Her name doesn't appear on the original registration. However, she was added as a financial administrator two weeks after Tyler boarded.""

I closed my eyes.

Two weeks.

He hadn't even waited until I'd given birth.

I felt sick.

Then my phone vibrated again.

The unknown number.

*Look inside the blue folder in your nursery closet. Your husband left something there before he boarded the ship.*

I froze.

The blue folder.

I knew exactly what that was.

Three months earlier, while I was organizing the nursery, I had found a folder behind the baby blankets.

Tyler had told me it contained old insurance paperwork.

I'd put it back without looking.

I stood abruptly.

"Emily?"" Michael asked.

"I need to go home.""

"Is something wrong?""

"I need to check something.""

Rebecca looked concerned.

"Would you like us to arrange transportation?""

"No. I have my car.""

Michael stood.

"Emily, given what we've discovered, I don't think you should go home alone.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

He hesitated.

"Because we don't know whether anyone else has access to your house.""

I stared at him.

My house.

The place where my daughters slept.

The place where I'd spent countless nights waiting for Tyler to come home.

Suddenly, it didn't feel like a safe place anymore.

"Then I'll call my neighbor.""

Michael nodded.

"Good.""

He offered to have someone accompany me.

I agreed.

Twenty minutes later, I was in the passenger seat of a company vehicle, watching Miami slide past the window.

Piper and Poppy were asleep behind me.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

When we arrived, my neighbor, Mrs. Alvarez, was waiting on the front porch.

She was seventy-two, with silver hair, a warm smile, and a habit of bringing over homemade chicken soup whenever she thought I looked tired.

Today, she wasn't smiling.

"Emily, sweetheart.""

I climbed out.

"What's wrong?""

She looked toward the house.

"I didn't want to frighten you.""

My stomach tightened.

"What happened?""

She lowered her voice.

"Someone came by yesterday.""

"Who?""

"A woman.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

"What woman?""

"Blonde. Very pretty. She said she was a friend of Tyler's.""

I looked at the house.

"Did you let her in?""

Mrs. Alvarez shook her head.

"No. But she seemed to know you weren't home.""

I swallowed.

"What did she want?""

Mrs. Alvarez reached into her cardigan pocket.

"She left this.""

She handed me a small white envelope.

My name was written across the front.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Tyler standing outside my house.

Beside him was Vanessa.

But that wasn't what made my hands go numb.

The photograph had been taken four months earlier.

And Tyler was holding a newborn baby.

A baby who wasn't Piper or Poppy.

I turned the photograph over.

There was a handwritten message.

*Ask your husband about the son he never told you about.*

I stared at it.

Then I looked toward my front door.

The blue folder was inside.

And suddenly, I understood that the woman at the cruise terminal might not have been the first secret Tyler had brought into our marriage.

She might only have been the latest.

I stepped inside, placed the babies' carriers safely on the living room floor, and hurried toward the nursery.

The blue folder was exactly where I had left it.

I opened it.

Inside were insurance documents, bank statements, and a hospital discharge summary.

The hospital was in Fort Lauderdale.

The patient's name was Tyler Carter.

The date was five months earlier.

And under the section marked Emergency Contact, I saw a name I had never heard before.

*Rachel Morgan.*

I turned the page.

There was a birth certificate.

A little boy.

Born three weeks before Tyler left for the Ocean Majesty.

And listed as the father was my husband.

But it was the final page that made my knees nearly buckle.

A photocopy of a handwritten letter, signed by Tyler.

It began:

Rachel, I know I promised you I would tell Emily after the babies were born. But I need you to understand something. If she finds out about our son before I return from the ship, everything I've worked for will be destroyed.

I pressed a trembling hand against my mouth.

Then I heard my phone ring.

It was an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

A woman's voice came through.

"Emily Carter?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Rachel Morgan.""

I gripped the edge of the changing table.

"I think you have something that belongs to me.""

I couldn't speak.

She continued.

"There's something else you need to know. Tyler didn't just leave me with a baby.""

My heart hammered.

"What are you talking about?""

Her voice broke.

"Before he boarded that ship, he promised me he was going to bring us all together. He said you knew about me.""

I closed my eyes.

"That's not true.""

"I know that now.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Emily, I need you to listen carefully. Tyler didn't create that company to steal money from you.""

I stared at the letter in my hand.

"Then why did he create it?""

Rachel was silent for a moment.

Then she whispered:

"Because he was planning to disappear with the money, and he needed someone else to take the blame.""

My blood ran cold.

"Who?""

May you like

Rachel answered with three words.

"Your father, Emily.""
