Chapter 4: The Family Secret Beneath My Mother's Name
For several seconds, I couldn't understand what my grandmother had just said.
"Marcus wasn't your grandfather by blood, Maya.""
I stared at her.
"That's not true.""
Claire pressed her lips together.
"Your mother was adopted.""
I turned toward Daniel.
He wasn't looking surprised.
That frightened me more than anything.
"Mr. Brooks?""
He slowly closed the folder.
"Your grandfather knew about this, Maya.""
"Then why did he call me his granddaughter?""
Daniel's expression softened.
"Because you were his granddaughter. Blood was never the thing that made him love you.""
I looked at the photograph of Grandpa beside his coffin.
He had raised me.
He had taught me to read, helped me with homework, and stayed awake beside my bed whenever I was sick.
He had never once made me feel like an outsider.
"Was my mother adopted when she was little?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes. Marcus and his first wife adopted Elizabeth when she was three years old. His wife passed away several years later. He raised Elizabeth alone.""
I looked at Claire.
"Then how did you become my grandmother?""
She hesitated.
"I married Marcus when Elizabeth was already grown.""
"Then you're not my grandmother either?""
Her expression hardened.
"Don't be disrespectful.""
I flinched.
Alexander immediately stepped beside me.
"Claire, she's asking a reasonable question.""
"Stay out of this.""
"No. Not anymore.""
Grandma looked at Daniel.
"Tell her the rest.""
Daniel opened the folder again.
"Marcus's first wife was named Eleanor. She and Marcus adopted Elizabeth after years of trying unsuccessfully to have children.""
He removed a photograph.
It showed a young couple standing outside a hospital.
The woman was holding a toddler.
My mother.
On the back, Grandpa had written:
The day our family became complete.
I touched the photograph.
"Did Grandpa love my mom?""
Daniel smiled.
"More than anything.""
"Then why did Grandma say she wasn't really his daughter?""
"Because she wanted you to believe your family was something it wasn't.""
Claire suddenly slammed her palm against the table.
"That's enough!""
Several people turned toward us.
Her voice shook.
"Marcus should never have involved this child in adult matters.""
Daniel remained composed.
"He involved her because he knew what had been done to her.""
I looked at Grandma.
"What did you do?""
She looked away.
"Nothing that concerns you.""
"Everything concerns me! It's my family!""
For a moment, she seemed genuinely startled.
Perhaps she had never expected me to raise my voice.
I was still thirteen.
I was still wearing the dress Grandpa had chosen.
But something inside me had changed.
I was tired of being told that questions were disrespectful.
Daniel pulled out another document.
"Marcus discovered that Claire had been withholding information about Elizabeth's adoption, Alexander's identity, and several financial transactions connected to the family.""
"Financial transactions?"" Alexander asked.
Daniel nodded.
"Yes. That's why Marcus commissioned the investigation.""
Claire shook her head.
"You're twisting everything.""
"Then let's look at the records.""
He placed a document on the table.
It was a copy of an old adoption record.
I couldn't understand all the legal language, but I recognized two names.
Eleanor Bennett.
Marcus Bennett.
And beneath them was my mother's name.
Elizabeth.
"Is this real?"" I asked.
"Yes," Daniel replied.
"Then why did Grandma tell me my mother was her daughter?""
Claire answered sharply.
"Because I helped raise her!""
I turned toward her.
"But you married Grandpa after Mom was already grown.""
"I was her stepmother.""
"Did she like you?""
The question seemed to strike something inside her.
Claire's face reddened.
"That's none of your business.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Your mother and Claire had a difficult relationship.""
Grandma laughed.
"Of course they did. Elizabeth thought she could do whatever she wanted.""
"What did she want?"" I asked.
"She wanted to marry Alexander. She wanted to move away. She wanted to take Marcus's money and start a life without considering anyone else.""
Alexander stepped forward.
"That's a lie.""
Claire turned on him.
"You have no idea what happened in this family.""
"I know Elizabeth loved me. I know she wanted to build a home with me. And I know Marcus supported us.""
Grandma pointed at him.
"You were never good enough for her.""
Alexander's jaw tightened.
"Perhaps. But that was Elizabeth's decision to make.""
Silence followed.
Daniel removed another document.
"This is the reason Marcus wanted the adoption records included.""
He handed it to me.
It was a letter written by my mother.
The paper was old, but the handwriting was clear.
Dear Dad,
I know Claire doesn't approve of Alexander. I know she thinks I am making a mistake.
But I need you to understand something.
You taught me that family is built by the people who stay.
You chose me when I was too young to remember what happened before. You loved me without asking where I came from.
Now I have found someone who loves me the same way.
I hope one day you will hold your granddaughter and understand why I cannot imagine a life without him.
Love, Elizabeth.
I read the letter twice.
My eyes filled.
Grandpa had been my mother's father in every way that mattered.
And now I understood why he had always told me that family wasn't simply about blood.
I folded the letter carefully.
"Did Grandma know Grandpa had this?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did she try to destroy it?""
He paused.
"Marcus found evidence that several family documents had been removed from his study.""
I looked toward Claire.
She was staring at the floor.
"Did you take them?""
No answer.
"Grandma?""
She finally looked up.
"I was protecting what Marcus built.""
"From my mother?""
"From her decisions.""
Alexander shook his head.
"Elizabeth was dead. What were you still trying to protect?""
Claire's expression changed.
For the first time, she looked less angry than frightened.
"Marcus was going to leave everything to that girl.""
Daniel corrected her.
"To his granddaughter.""
"She wasn't even his blood!""
The words echoed through the funeral home.
I felt Alexander's hand settle gently near my shoulder.
Daniel closed the folder.
"Mrs. Bennett, Marcus anticipated that you might make that argument.""
Claire stared at him.
"What?""
"He left a separate letter addressing exactly this issue.""
Daniel took out a smaller envelope.
It was marked in Grandpa's handwriting.
For Claire. Only if she questions Maya's place in this family.
Grandma's face drained of color.
Daniel opened it.
"Claire,
"If you are hearing this, then you have once again decided that blood determines who deserves to belong.
"I wish I could say I'm surprised.
"You knew Elizabeth was adopted when you married me. You knew she was my daughter in every way that mattered.
"And when Maya was born, you knew exactly what she meant to me.
"She was my granddaughter.
"Not because of a name on a certificate.
"Not because of a biological connection.
"Because I loved her.
"I watched her take her first steps. I held her when she cried. I sat beside her hospital bed when she had pneumonia. I promised her that she would never be alone.
"I will not allow anyone to use my death as an excuse to make her feel unwanted.
"Not even you.
"Marcus.""
Daniel stopped reading.
Grandma looked as if someone had struck her.
I stared at the letter.
Then I looked at her.
"Grandpa knew you would say those things about me.""
She didn't answer.
"He knew you might tell me I wasn't his real granddaughter.""
Her eyes glistened.
I took a small step backward.
"Did he know you didn't love me?""
Claire's mouth opened.
But before she could answer, Daniel's phone rang.
He checked the screen.
Then his expression changed.
"Excuse me.""
He stepped away and answered.
"Brooks speaking.""
A few seconds passed.
"Yes. I understand.""
He listened again.
Then he looked directly at Claire.
"Has the bank confirmed the transfer?""
My grandmother went completely still.
Daniel ended the call.
Alexander frowned.
"What transfer?""
Daniel looked at the documents in front of him.
"Marcus's investigation uncovered a withdrawal from one of his business accounts shortly before his death.""
Claire immediately shook her head.
"That has nothing to do with me.""
Daniel slowly turned the document around.
The amount was written in bold.
$480,000.
The recipient's name was clearly printed underneath.
*Claire Bennett.*
I looked at her.
"Grandma, did you take Grandpa's money?""
She didn't answer.
Daniel's voice became colder.
"Mrs. Bennett, we now have confirmation that the transfer was made without Marcus's authorization.""
Claire gripped the back of a chair.
And suddenly, I understood.
She hadn't simply wanted Grandpa's house.
She had wanted something else.
May you like
Something worth nearly half a million dollars.
And Grandpa had discovered it before he died.
