Chapter 4: The Phone Call From The Dead
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody breathed.
The name on the screen remained there, glowing in the darkness of the hidden room.
*Mom.*
For fifteen years, that name had existed only in memories.
A photograph on a shelf.
A faded birthday card tucked inside a drawer.
A voice I could barely remember.
A woman I had buried in my mind as a part of my past.
But now her name was calling from an old phone hidden behind my wall.
My fingers went cold.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
“I know.””
The phone continued vibrating.
A tiny mechanical sound that felt louder than anything I had ever heard.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Don’t answer it.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her face changed.
Because she knew.
That was becoming a pattern.
Every time I asked a question, Vanessa already knew the answer.
Every secret in my life seemed to have passed through her hands before it reached me.
“Vanessa,” I said slowly, “why can my dead mother call this phone?””
She looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
The lie was obvious.
I had known Vanessa long enough to recognize every version of her.
The angry one.
The confident one.
The sarcastic one.
The hurt one.
But this version…
This was fear.
Pure fear.
Daniel finally reached out.
His hand hovered over the phone.
Then he answered.
“Hello?””
His face changed instantly.
I couldn’t hear the voice on the other end.
But I saw what it did to him.
His shoulders dropped.
His eyes filled with pain.
“Daniel?””
He didn’t speak.
“Daniel, is Ethan there?””
My heart stopped.
The voice was faint.
But I heard it.
A woman’s voice.
Older.
Broken.
Real.
Daniel looked at me.
The phone shook in his hand.
“She wants to talk to you.””
I didn’t move.
“Who?””
He swallowed.
“You know who.””
“No.””
I stepped backward.
“No, I don’t.””
But a strange feeling had already started building inside me.
A feeling I hated.
Because deep down, beneath logic and reason, something about this was familiar.
Daniel held the phone out.
I stared at it.
“Answer it,” Vanessa whispered.
I looked at her.
“You just told me not to.””
“I was wrong.””
That frightened me more.
Vanessa admitting she was wrong was almost impossible.
Slowly, I took the phone.
I placed it against my ear.
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then—
“Ethan?””
I froze.
My knees nearly gave out.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from the last fifteen years.
From somewhere deeper.
Somewhere hidden.
“Mom?””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
The silence on the other end broke.
A quiet sob.
“Oh, my baby.””
I closed my eyes.
No.
It couldn’t be.
My mother was dead.
I had watched the funeral.
I had seen the coffin.
I had watched my father stand beside the grave.
“I don’t understand,” I whispered.
“I know.””
Her voice trembled.
“I know you don’t.””
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Too long.
Too painful.
“Ethan…”
“Where are you?””
“I can’t tell you.””
My anger returned.
“Of course you can’t.””
My voice rose.
“Everyone knows something except me.””
“Please listen.””
“No.””
I looked around the hidden room.
“At least tell me the truth now.””
Another pause.
Then she said something that made my entire body freeze.
“Daniel is not the one you should be afraid of.””
I looked at him.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
My mother continued.
“Ethan, you have to understand something.””
Her voice became urgent.
“Your memories were taken from you for a reason.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What does that mean?””
“You weren’t supposed to remember what happened that night.””
“What night?””
The line crackled.
“Mom?””
Nothing.
Then her voice returned.
“We don’t have much time.””
“Who is we?””
She ignored the question.
“Where is Vanessa?””
I looked at my wife.
She looked away.
“How do you know Vanessa?””
Silence.
Then my mother whispered:
“Because she was there.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
“Ethan, listen carefully.””
The urgency in her voice made my skin crawl.
“Do not trust anyone who tells you they were protecting you.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked like she had been punched.
“Mom—”
The phone suddenly made a loud crackling sound.
Then another voice came through.
A man.
“Hang up.””
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t my mother.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
A new voice.
Cold.
Calm.
Familiar.
My grip tightened.
“Who is that?””
The man didn’t answer.
Instead, my mother whispered:
“Ethan, run.””
The call ended.
The room went silent.
I lowered the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel looked at me.
“He found us.””
The words sent a chill through me.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Toward my house.
Toward my family.
“I thought we had more time.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
His eyes met mine.
“The man who made sure you forgot me.””
A sound came from downstairs.
A door opening.
We all froze.
My first thought was Lily.
But then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Someone walking through my house.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Ethan.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“We need to leave.””
I looked at her.
“Who is downstairs?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I moved toward the hallway.
Daniel grabbed my shoulder.
“Don’t.””
I turned.
“You hid behind my wall for years, you know my entire life, and now you’re telling me not to walk into my own house?””
“Because if he’s here, you’re not ready.””
“Ready for what?””
Daniel stared at me.
Then he said:
“To remember.””
The footsteps stopped.
Right below us.
A man’s voice called from downstairs.
“Ethan?””
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew that voice too.
Not from memory.
From my childhood.
A voice that had disappeared from my life fifteen years ago.
A voice that belonged to someone who should have been gone forever.
My father.
“Ethan,” the voice called again.
“Son?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Daniel stepped backward.
And for the first time since I met him…
He looked terrified.
The man downstairs continued.
“I know you’re home.””
The lights suddenly went out.
The hidden room disappeared into darkness.
Lily screamed from downstairs.
“Daddy!””
I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t plan.
I just moved.
But as I reached the stairs, one thought hit me harder than anything else.
My father wasn’t dead.
My mother wasn’t dead.
My brother wasn’t gone.
And my entire life…
might have been built on a lie.
Then I saw the man standing at the bottom of the stairs.
A man with gray hair.
A familiar face.
A face I had spent years believing belonged only to a photograph.
He looked up at me.
And smiled.
“Hello, Ethan.””
My father lifted his eyes toward the hidden room behind me.
May you like
Then he said the words that made Vanessa collapse.
“Did Daniel finally tell you why he was locked away?””
