Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The call ended.
But my father’s voice stayed.
Rebecca.
One word.
My name.
A name I had heard thousands of times in my life.
A name I had spent fifteen years believing I would never hear from him again.
The room was silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Emma whispered the question everyone was thinking.
“Mom…”
Her eyes were wide.
“Was that him?””
I looked at the phone.
At the call history.
Unknown number.
No record.
No proof.
Just a voice from my past.
“I don’t know.””
But I did.
Somewhere deep inside, I knew.
A daughter knows her father’s voice.
No matter how many years pass.
No matter how much pain exists between them.
You can forget conversations.
You can forget promises.
But you don’t forget the sound of the person who once carried you when you were too small to walk.
General Hale looked shaken.
More shaken than I had ever seen him.
“Rebecca.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
“That wasn’t possible.””
I stared.
“You’re telling me what is possible?””
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“I’m telling you I watched your father die.””
The room became colder.
“Then explain.””
He looked at the floor.
“I can’t.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the truth.””
I stepped closer.
“You spent fifteen years letting me believe my father abandoned me.””
His face tightened.
“You think I wanted that?””
“I think you knew more than you told me.””
That hurt him.
I saw it.
But hurt was not enough.
Not anymore.
Everyone in this room had a reason.
Everyone had an explanation.
My daughter had been beaten because powerful people believed they could control the truth.
My father had disappeared because he believed secrets would protect me.
And General Hale had carried information for fifteen years.
I was done accepting silence as protection.
“Where did he die?””
Hale looked at me.
“The accident happened outside the city.””
“Where exactly?””
He hesitated.
“Rebecca—”
“Where?””
Finally, he answered.
“Near an old Carter-owned property.””
My heart stopped.
A Carter property.
Of course.
“Why was he there?””
“Because he was meeting someone.””
“Who?””
Hale looked at Evelyn.
Everyone followed his eyes.
Evelyn went pale.
“No.””
I turned.
“You know.””
She shook her head.
“I know who he was supposed to meet.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Your mother.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
“My mother died eight years before my father.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Evelyn’s voice dropped.
“Because your mother wasn’t supposed to be dead.””
The room went completely still.
I felt like I was standing outside my own body.
Too many impossible truths.
Too many pieces that refused to fit.
“My mother died.””
Evelyn nodded sadly.
“That is what everyone was told.””
I looked at Hale.
“And you knew?””
He looked away.
The answer was obvious.
My voice became quieter.
“How many people have been lying to me?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody had a number.
Evelyn finally spoke.
“Your parents discovered Carter Holdings together.””
I turned to her.
“Together?””
“Yes.””
“My mother?””
“She was the first person to uncover their operation.””
I sat down slowly.
Everything I believed about my childhood was changing.
“My mother wasn’t just a victim.””
“No.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“She was the reason they became afraid.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew how to expose them.””
“What happened to her?””
Evelyn looked at the floor.
“She disappeared.””
The word again.
That word everyone used when they didn’t want to say something worse.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Carter Holdings made the world believe she was gone.””
My hands tightened.
“Did she survive?””
Evelyn didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Yes.””
Emma covered her mouth.
“Where is she?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“That’s what your father spent the last years of his life trying to discover.””
My heart stopped.
“My father was looking for my mother?””
“Yes.””
“And he found her?””
Evelyn looked at Hale.
He nodded slowly.
“He found her.””
The room went silent.
“Then why didn’t he come back?””
Nobody answered.
Then Hale spoke.
“Because he realized someone was using your family to get to him.””
My anger returned.
“Someone?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Hale looked at me.
“The person who betrayed him.””
The sentence from my father’s letter returned.
The person who betrayed me is someone you love.
I felt sick.
“Who?””
Hale opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
His phone rang.
Everyone froze.
He looked at the screen.
The color drained from his face.
“What?””
Nobody spoke.
Hale listened.
Then his expression changed completely.
“Where?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m coming.””
He ended the call.
I stood.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“It’s Claire.””
Emma immediately reacted.
“What about her?””
“She’s been found.””
Relief flashed across my daughter’s face.
Then disappeared when she saw Hale’s expression.
“What’s wrong?””
Hale looked at me.
“She’s injured.””
“How badly?””
“She was trying to reach you.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where is she?””
Hale didn’t answer.
“General.””
“She’s at the old Carter property.””
The same place.
The same location where my father supposedly died.
I looked at Agent Reed.
“You knew about this place?””
He nodded.
“We’ve been trying to access it for years.””
“Why couldn’t you?””
His expression was grim.
“Because it’s protected.””
“By who?””
He looked at Hale.
“People with power.””
We arrived forty minutes later.
The property sat at the edge of the city.
Old.
Quiet.
The kind of place that looked abandoned but felt watched.
I stepped out of the vehicle.
The air was cold.
I hated that it felt familiar.
Like some part of me remembered this place.
Hale walked beside me.
“You don’t have to do this.””
I looked at him.
“Yes, I do.””
“Rebecca.””
“No.””
I stopped.
“You had fifteen years to protect me.””
My voice softened.
“But my daughter only had one night.””
He looked away.
Because he knew.
We entered the building.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
Except one room.
A room that looked recently used.
A chair.
A table.
Medical supplies.
And on the wall…
Photographs.
My family.
My father.
My mother.
Me.
Emma.
I stared.
“How long have they been watching us?””
Nobody answered.
Then a weak voice came from the corner.
“Rebecca.””
I turned.
Claire Carter was sitting against the wall.
Alive.
Bruised.
But conscious.
Emma rushed forward.
“Claire!””
They held onto each other.
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
Two women who had survived the same nightmare.
Two people who should never have had to fight this hard to be heard.
I approached slowly.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For not telling you sooner.””
“Tell me now.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Your father trusted my family once.””
I waited.
“He believed there was still good inside the Carters.””
She laughed sadly.
“He was wrong.””
“What happened to him?””
Claire looked at Hale.
Then at me.
“General Hale didn’t kill your father.””
Hale exhaled.
I noticed.
But Claire wasn’t finished.
“He tried to save him.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Then who did?””
Claire looked terrified.
Not of me.
Of the answer.
“Someone who had access to everything.””
“Who?””
She reached into her jacket.
Pulled out a small recorder.
And pressed play.
A voice filled the room.
A voice I recognized immediately.
A voice that made Emma grab my hand.
Because it belonged to someone we never suspected.
Someone who had stood beside us.
Someone who had helped us.
The recording played:
“Rebecca Walker will never find out the truth.””
I froze.
Because the voice belonged to Agent Thomas Reed.
Claire looked at me.
“The man you trusted to help you…”
May you like
She whispered:
“Is the man your father warned you about.””
