Amused

Chapter 9: The Paper She Hid

For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand the words on the screen.

*Adoption papers.*

The phrase kept repeating in my mind.

Not because adoption was something bad.

Because Vanessa had written it like it was a weapon.

Like there was something hidden.

Something she believed could take Lily away from me.

I looked at Emily.

“What adoption papers?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Did Vanessa send anything else?””

“No.””

I stared at the message.

“She wanted me to see this.””

Rachel nodded.

“She’s trying to scare you.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“She’s trying to make me panic.””

And that was exactly what I couldn’t do.

Not anymore.

Every time Vanessa pushed me emotionally, I reacted.

Every time she created chaos, I chased it.

But that was what she wanted.

She wanted me angry.

She wanted me desperate.

She wanted me to make a mistake.

I took a breath.

“What happens now?””

Emily closed the folder.

“Right now, we document everything.””

I nodded.

“Good.””

“And I would recommend you speak with legal counsel.””

“I will.””

Emily looked at me carefully.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“I want you to know something.””

I waited.

“Lily has never behaved like a child who is afraid of her father.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

Because for weeks, maybe months, I had been afraid of losing her.

But now someone else was confirming what I knew.

The truth was there.

I just needed to protect it.

When I left the school, I called an attorney.

Not because I wanted a fight.

Because Vanessa had already started one.

By the time I returned home, Rachel was sitting with the children in the living room.

Mason was helping Lily draw.

They looked normal.

Peaceful.

And I hated that I had almost lost this.

I sat down beside them.

“Lily.””

She looked up.

“Yes, Daddy?””

“Can I ask you something?””

She nodded.

“Did Vanessa ever talk about adoption?””

Her pencil stopped.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

“What?””

“Sweetheart.””

She looked down.

“Sometimes.””

My heart tightened.

“What did she say?””

Lily pressed the pencil against the paper.

“She said you only kept me because you promised Mommy.””

I felt a wave of anger.

But I controlled it.

“What else?””

“She said…”

Lily became quiet.

I waited.

“She said I wasn’t really yours.””

The room went silent.

Rachel looked at me.

Mason looked away.

I felt like something inside me had cracked.

I moved closer to Lily.

“Sweetheart, look at me.””

She looked up.

“You are my daughter.””

“But—”

“No.””

I held her hand.

“Listen carefully.””

“You are my daughter because I love you.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Not because of papers.””

“Not because of promises.””

“Not because of anything anyone else says.””

“You are my daughter because you are you.””

She hugged me.

And for a moment, the world disappeared.

Then Mason quietly said:

“She lied.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked nervous.

“She told Lily that because she wanted her to feel like she didn’t belong.””

My jaw tightened.

“Mason…”

“I heard her.””

“When?””

“A few months ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He shrugged.

“She said if I told, she would say I was making things up.””

I looked at both children.

Two kids.

Both carrying secrets.

Both afraid.

And both trying to protect each other.

That night, after the children went to sleep, I searched through every document in the house.

Every drawer.

Every cabinet.

Every place Vanessa might have hidden something.

The adoption papers had to exist.

Because she wouldn’t mention something she couldn’t use.

Around midnight, I found another envelope.

Hidden behind old tax documents.

My name was on it.

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of a legal document.

My hands shook.

It was not what I expected.

It wasn’t about taking Lily away.

It was about something much older.

Something from after Sarah died.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

Then I stopped.

Because I realized what Vanessa had hidden.

The papers weren’t about Lily leaving me.

They were about Vanessa entering our lives.

Years ago, after Sarah died, I had been overwhelmed.

A single father.

A grieving husband.

A man barely functioning.

Vanessa had helped.

She had supported me.

Or at least, I thought she had.

But the document revealed something I never knew.

Vanessa had requested legal guardianship information before we were even married.

Before Lily called her family.

Before I agreed she would become part of our lives.

Why?

I kept reading.

Then I saw the date.

The date was before Vanessa and I started dating.

My hands went cold.

That was impossible.

I searched the pages.

There was an attached note.

Handwritten.

Not Vanessa’s handwriting.

Someone else’s.

*“Request denied. Biological father remains active and capable guardian.””*

I stared.

Biological father.

Me.

She had tried.

Before we were even together.

Before she knew my daughter.

Before she claimed to love us.

I heard a noise behind me.

I turned.

Mason stood there.

“You’re awake?””

He nodded.

“Sorry.””

“It’s okay.””

He looked at the papers.

“Did you find it?””

“Find what?””

“The reason she’s scared.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Mason walked closer.

“Mom said if you ever found those papers, you would know.””

“Know what?””

He looked at me.

“That she didn’t marry you because she loved you.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

He looked down.

“She told me once.””

“When?””

“A long time ago.””

“Mason.””

He swallowed.

“She said you needed someone.””

I stared.

“She said you were lonely.””

The room felt colder.

“She said Lily needed a mother.””

I couldn’t speak.

Mason continued.

“But then she got angry because Lily still loved her real mom.””

I looked away.

Sarah.

Even after death, Vanessa had been competing with someone who wasn’t there.

Someone she could never replace.

I closed the folder.

“We need to find the rest.””

Mason looked confused.

“The rest?””

“There’s always more.””

And there was.

Because Vanessa had not hidden one thing.

She had hidden everything.

The next morning, my attorney called.

“I reviewed what you sent.””

“And?””

“There are serious concerns.””

“What kind?””

“The reports. The signature. The timeline.””

“What about the guardianship document?””

There was a pause.

“That’s important.””

“Why?””

“Because it establishes something.””

“What?””

“That Vanessa had previously attempted to alter her legal position regarding Lily.””

I sat down.

“Before we married?””

“Yes.””

“Can that matter?””

“It depends.””

“On what?””

“On intent.””

The word stayed with me.

Intent.

Because suddenly, everything looked different.

The pantry lock.

The reports.

The fake signature.

The folders.

The lies.

They weren’t random moments.

They were connected.

My attorney continued.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“We found a name attached to one of the documents.””

“Whose name?””

I waited.

Then he said:

“A private investigator.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“Vanessa hired someone.””

“For what?””

A pause.

“To collect information about you.””

I stood up.

“When?””

The answer came quietly.

“Three months after your wedding.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Toward where Lily was sleeping.

Toward the room where I had promised her she would always be safe.

Vanessa hadn’t just changed.

She had planned.

And then my attorney sent me one final file.

A photograph.

A report.

The first page contained a date.

May you like

And a sentence that made my blood run cold.

*“Subject: Michael Carter. Objective: Determine weaknesses that could be used in future custody proceedings.””*
