Amused

Chapter 7: My Husband’s Last Secret

I met my lawyer, Daniel, at a quiet café across town.

I chose somewhere public.

Somewhere with witnesses.

After everything I had learned, trust felt like a luxury I could no longer afford.

Daniel placed a folder on the table.

“I need you to understand something,” he said.

“What?””

“Your husband was not unaware of Richard’s intentions.””

I stared at him.

“My husband knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“Before he passed away, he became concerned about Richard’s financial decisions.””

I opened the folder.

Inside was a letter.

My husband’s handwriting.

The sight of it nearly broke me.

I traced the first line with my finger.

My dearest Evelyn.

I had not seen his handwriting in years.

Daniel watched quietly as I read.

Evelyn,

If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.

I hope I am wrong.

I hope Richard proves my fears unnecessary.

But if he does not, you need to know the truth.

Richard has always been ambitious.

Too ambitious.

I trusted him with my business.

I trusted him with my family.

That was my mistake.

My hands trembled.

I continued.

He believes what we built belongs partly to him.

He believes loyalty is something people owe him.

Not something he owes others.

I looked up.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Daniel sighed.

“Your husband wanted to handle it himself.””

“That sounds like him.””

It did.

My husband always believed he could protect everyone.

Even when he was the one who needed protecting.

I read further.

The most important thing is this:

Do not allow anyone to pressure you into transferring ownership of the house.

The house was placed under your protection for a reason.

Only you can decide its future.

I stopped.

“Protection?””

Daniel nodded.

“There is more.””

He pulled out another document.

“The house was never simply a family home.””

I looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

“Your husband placed it into a protected estate arrangement before his death.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because he suspected Richard might attempt to gain control over the company assets connected to the property.””

My mind raced.

“So Richard wasn’t after my home?””

“Not only your home.””

Daniel leaned closer.

“He was trying to access something your husband hid.””

“What?””

He opened another page.

“The original company records.””

I felt dizzy.

“My husband’s old business files?””

“Yes.””

“But those disappeared after he died.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

For years, I thought those files were lost.

I thought my husband’s company ended when he passed away.

But apparently, there was something hidden.

Something valuable enough for Richard to manipulate my own son.

When I returned home, I found Harrison waiting.

He looked exhausted.

“I need to talk to you.””

I kept walking.

“Mom.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t know everything.””

I turned around.

“But you knew enough.””

He looked away.

“I thought Richard was helping us.””

“Helping you steal from me?””

“No.””

“Then what was the plan?””

His silence was painful.

Finally, he whispered:

“Richard said he could fix our debts.””

My anger softened for a moment.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I understood.

Harrison had always wanted to be successful.

And Richard knew exactly how to use that weakness.

“What debts?””

He closed his eyes.

“Sloan’s business failed.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

“She didn’t tell me at first.””

“And then?””

“She said Richard could help.””

I looked toward the staircase.

“Sloan knew exactly what she was doing.””

Harrison nodded slowly.

“I think she did.””

That was the first honest thing he had said.

“Where is she now?””

He hesitated.

“She left.””

“Left?””

“She took her things.””

I almost felt relieved.

Almost.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Mrs. Carter.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

“You don’t know me.””

“Then why are you calling?””

A quiet laugh.

“Because I think you should know your son is not the only person who betrayed you.””

My grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

The voice lowered.

“I’m someone who worked with your husband.””

My heart stopped.

“Richard?””

“No.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“I’m the person who helped Richard hide what he did.””
