Amused

Chapter 5: The Man My Father Was Afraid Of

Eric didn’t move.

Neither did I.

The tunnel felt smaller with every passing second.

The old man’s voice echoed through the hidden passage, calm and steady.

Too steady.

That was the worst part.

He didn’t sound angry.

He sounded like someone who had already won.

Claire grabbed Eric’s arm.

“Don’t answer him.””

Eric looked back toward the darkness.

“You know him.””

Her silence was enough.

I stared at her.

“You know who’s back there.””

Claire’s face tightened.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

She looked at Eric.

“Your grandfather.””

Eric shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Claire’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“It’s exactly what he wanted you to believe.””

Another sound came from the hidden room behind us.

A slow step.

Then another.

The man wasn’t rushing.

He knew we had nowhere to go.

Eric turned toward Claire.

“You told me my grandfather was dead.””

“I thought he was.””

“You thought?””

Claire looked away.

“Daniel thought he was.””

That answer made my stomach twist.

Because everyone kept talking about my father like he was part of some game.

A game where everyone knew the rules except us.

Eric stepped closer to the entrance.

“Dad spent his whole life telling me nothing.””

Claire grabbed his shoulder.

“Eric, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I’m tired of listening.””

He looked at the papers in his hand.

“I found out today that I wasn’t born into the family I thought I was. I found out my father hid a room in his house. I found out my mother didn’t abandon me.””

He looked toward the darkness.

“And now I find out the man who raised my father is alive and wanted me gone?””

His eyes filled with anger.

“Someone needs to start explaining.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Claire whispered:

“Your grandfather’s name is Victor Hayes.””

I knew the name.

Everyone in our town knew the name.

Victor Hayes.

Dad’s father.

The man who built the original Hayes Manufacturing company.

The man whose photograph hung in the old office building.

The man people described as brilliant.

Successful.

Demanding.

But Dad never spoke about him.

Not once.

I remembered asking him when I was little.

“Why don’t we visit Grandpa?””

Dad had gone quiet.

Then he simply said:

“Some doors are closed for a reason.””

At the time, I thought he meant he didn’t like his father.

I never imagined he meant he was afraid.

Eric looked at Claire.

“Why would he want me gone?””

Claire’s eyes moved to the documents he carried.

“Because you were proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Victor couldn’t control everything.””

A shadow moved at the end of the tunnel.

Eric immediately stepped forward.

But Claire held him back.

“No.””

A voice came from the darkness.

“Still protecting him, Claire?””

The man stepped into view.

And for the first time, I saw him.

Victor Hayes.

He was older than I remembered from photographs.

Much older.

His hair was white.

His face was thinner.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Focused.

The kind of eyes that made you feel like you were being measured.

He looked at Eric.

Not me.

Not Claire.

Only Eric.

“So.””

His voice was quiet.

“You finally found your way here.””

Eric stared.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

Victor smiled slightly.

“Your father always did enjoy dramatic stories.””

My hands clenched.

“Why were you hiding?””

Victor looked at me.

A flicker of recognition crossed his face.

“Sarah.””

I froze.

“You know who I am?””

“I know everything about this family.””

The way he said family made my skin crawl.

Eric stepped between us.

“Don’t talk to her.””

Victor looked at him.

“You have Daniel’s temper.””

A pause.

“But not his patience.””

Eric’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t get to talk about him.””

Victor smiled.

“That’s exactly what Daniel would have said.””

The anger in Eric’s face grew.

“Why did you want me gone?””

Victor looked at Claire.

Then back at Eric.

“Because you were never supposed to be his son.””

Eric laughed.

“That’s the truth you came here to tell me?””

“No.””

Victor took another step.

“The truth is that your father stole you.””

Silence.

I looked at Claire.

Her face had gone pale.

Eric looked confused.

“What?””

Victor continued.

“Daniel was young. Emotional. He believed he could save everyone.””

“Save me from what?””

Victor ignored the question.

“He saw Claire suffering and decided he knew better than everyone else.””

Claire’s voice shook.

“Stop.””

Victor looked at her.

“You should have told him.””

“Told him what?””

Victor smiled.

“Tell him.””

Claire looked at Eric.

She looked terrified.

And that terrified me more than Victor.

Because Claire wasn’t afraid of him.

She was afraid of the truth.

“Eric,” she whispered.

“I need you to understand something.””

He waited.

“I did leave.””

The words hit harder than any of us expected.

Eric’s face changed.

Claire continued quickly.

“But not because I didn’t love you.””

“Then why?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because Victor gave me a choice.””

Eric stared.

“What choice?””

Claire looked at Victor.

Then back at her son.

“He told me if I stayed, Daniel would lose everything.””

Victor said nothing.

Because he didn’t need to.

Claire continued.

“He had power. Money. Lawyers.

Connections. He said he could destroy Daniel’s career, take you away, and make sure I never saw you again.””

Eric’s voice became quiet.

“So you left.””

“Yes.””

“You abandoned me.””

Tears rolled down Claire’s face.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than an excuse would have.

Eric looked away.

“I spent my entire life thinking nobody wanted me.””

Claire stepped closer.

“I wanted you.””

“But you left.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Eric shook his head.

“You don’t get to say you wanted me.””

His voice broke.

“You weren’t there.””

Claire covered her mouth.

I looked at Eric.

I had seen him angry before.

I had never seen him wounded like this.

Victor watched silently.

Almost proudly.

That made me hate him.

“You enjoyed this.””

Victor looked at me.

“What?””

“You wanted this conversation.””

He tilted his head.

“You’re more like your father than I expected.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means you notice things.””

He looked around the hidden room.

“Daniel always believed feelings were more important than facts.””

“And you don’t?””

“No.””

Victor looked at Eric.

“Facts are what survive.””

Eric stepped closer.

“You’re not answering my question.””

Victor stared at him.

“Which question?””

“Why did you want me gone?””

The old man was quiet.

Then he said:

“Because your existence meant Daniel had something I could never control.””

Eric frowned.

“What?””

“Love.””

Nobody spoke.

Victor continued.

“Your father was weak when it came to you.””

I felt something twist inside me.

Because suddenly, I understood.

All those years I thought Dad was disappointed in Eric.

Maybe he wasn’t.

Maybe he was afraid.

Afraid of losing him.

Victor looked at the documents.

“You found the adoption papers.””

Eric held them tighter.

“Yes.””

“Then you know.””

“Know what?””

Victor stepped closer.

“That Daniel wasn’t your first father.””

Eric’s expression changed.

“What?””

Claire whispered:

“Eric…”

Victor smiled.

“Tell him.””

Nobody moved.

Victor continued.

“Daniel adopted you.””

Eric looked at Claire.

“I know.””

“No.””

Victor shook his head.

“You don’t.””

The room went silent.

Then he said:

“Daniel adopted you because your biological father died.””

Eric stared.

“My biological father?””

Victor nodded.

“And the man who killed him…”

He paused.

Looking directly at Eric.

“…was your father.””

My heart stopped.

Eric didn’t breathe.

The tunnel went completely silent.

Claire whispered:

“No.””

But Victor kept going.

“Daniel spent thirty-eight years protecting you from the truth.””

Eric’s face turned pale.

“Who was my biological father?””

Victor smiled.

A cruel, satisfied smile.

Then he reached into his coat and pulled out an old photograph.

He held it toward Eric.

“Look closely.””

Eric took it.

His hands shook.

I stepped closer.

And when I saw the man in the picture, I felt the ground disappear beneath me.

Because the man standing beside Claire and baby Eric wasn’t a stranger.

He was someone I knew.

Someone who had been at every family gathering.

Someone Dad trusted.

Someone we had never questioned.

Victor whispered:

“Your real father was closer to you than you ever imagined.””

Eric looked up.

May you like

And the name that came out of his mouth was barely audible.

“Uncle Michael?””
