Chapter 2: The Name on the Passenger List

The name stared back at me from the screen.

*Victoria Hale.*

I recognized it.

Not because I knew her personally.

Because I knew the company attached to her name.

Hale International Holdings was the kind of corporation that appeared on magazine covers and business news channels. Private jets. Luxury hotels. Political donations.

Money that moved quietly.

Power that opened doors.

I looked at Major Hayes.

“Why is her name important?””

He lowered his voice.

“Because she isn’t just some passenger, sir.””

“What does that mean?””

He hesitated.

“She’s listed as the legal guardian of the children.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

I looked back at Lily and Owen.

The two children sat beside a security officer, sharing a small bottle of water.

They looked exhausted.

Lost.

But they were still waiting.

Waiting for someone to come back.

Someone who had already decided not to.

I walked over.

“Lily.””

She looked up.

“Yes?””

“Do you know Victoria Hale?””

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“That’s Mommy’s name.””

I sat beside her again.

“Can you tell me about her?””

She rubbed the teddy bear’s torn ear.

“She used to be nice.””

“Used to?””

Lily nodded.

“Before Daddy died.””

Owen finally spoke.

“She changed after.””

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“How?””

He looked away.

“She stopped coming to our room.””

Lily interrupted quickly.

“She was busy.””

The way she defended her mother told me more than the words did.

Children always protect the people they love.

Even when those people hurt them.

Major Hayes approached.

“Sir, police are here.””

I nodded.

A detective named Alvarez introduced herself and began asking questions.

“Colonel, did the children tell you their mother abandoned them?””

“Yes.””

“Exact words?””

I looked at Lily.

“She said, ‘We’re too much trouble now.’”

Detective Alvarez wrote it down.

Then she looked at the security footage.

The woman in the video walked confidently.

No hesitation.

No panic.

No looking around.

“She planned this,” Alvarez said.

I noticed Lily listening.

I lowered my voice.

“Maybe we should talk somewhere quieter.””

But Lily grabbed my sleeve.

“Did she leave because of us?””

The question hit harder than anything I had experienced overseas.

“No.””

She looked uncertain.

“People leave when children are bad.””

“No.””

I made sure she heard every word.

“Adults make choices. Children are never the reason an adult abandons them.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

But she didn’t cry.

She had already learned how to hold everything inside.

Later, in a private waiting area, officers gave the twins blankets.

Owen fell asleep almost immediately.

Lily stayed awake.

“You’re a soldier?””

“Yes.””

“Did you fight bad people?””

“Sometimes.””

“Were you scared?””

I smiled faintly.

“Sometimes.””

She looked surprised.

“Soldiers get scared?””

“Everyone gets scared.””

“Then why do they do things anyway?””

I looked at her.

Because that was the question every soldier eventually answers.

“Because someone needs help.””

She looked toward her sleeping brother.

“Like us?””

“Yes.””

For the first time that night, she smiled.

Only a little.

But I saw it.

Then Detective Alvarez returned.

Her expression had changed.

That meant something was wrong.

“Colonel, can I speak with you privately?””

We stepped away.

“What happened?””

She showed me a document on her tablet.

“The children’s father’s death was ruled accidental.””

I frowned.

“And?””

She scrolled down.

“But there was an unresolved insurance investigation.””

I stared at the report.

“What kind of investigation?””

She looked directly at me.

“Someone tried to prevent the twins from inheriting their father’s estate.””

I felt the pieces shifting.

“This wasn’t just abandonment.””

“No.””

Detective Alvarez locked her screen.

“We think leaving them at the airport may have been the easiest part of Victoria Hale’s plan.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

“Colonel?””

“Yes?””

“You need to stop asking questions about those children.””

I stood still.

“How did you get this number?””

A pause.

Then the voice said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because I know exactly who you are.””

The call ended.

May you like

And when I looked back toward Lily and Owen…

Someone was standing outside the glass door watching them.
