Amused

Chapter 5: Six Names in a Locked Drawer

The following morning, Westbrook Middle School opened its doors at 7:30.

But something was different.

Two district officials stood near the reception desk.

A security officer had been assigned to the administrative hallway.

And Mrs. Baxter's classroom remained locked.

Students noticed immediately.

Whispers traveled through the corridors.

"Did you hear she got suspended?""

"My brother said she hit someone.""

"Apparently, there's a picture.""

"Is she coming back?""

Nobody seemed to know.

Malik arrived at 7:42.

His backpack hung from his shoulder.

His injured hand was wrapped in a light bandage.

He had considered staying home.

But his mother had asked him what he wanted.

And he had decided that Mrs. Baxter shouldn't be the reason he stopped attending school.

At the entrance, Caleb was waiting.

"Hey, man.""

Malik smiled faintly.

"Hey.""

Caleb looked at the bandage.

"How's your hand?""

"Better.""

"Does it still hurt?""

"A little.""

Caleb nodded.

Then he leaned closer.

"My dad said something happened last night.""

"What?""

"He found more reports.""

Malik stopped walking.

"How many?""

"Six so far.""

Malik looked toward the administrative hallway.

"Six students?""

"At least.""

Before Caleb could say anything else, Mrs. Patterson approached.

"Good morning, boys.""

"Morning," Caleb replied.

She smiled at Malik.

"How are you feeling today?""

"Okay.""

"Good. Dr. Reynolds would like to speak with you and your mother later this morning. Your mom has already confirmed.""

Malik nodded.

"Okay.""

Mrs. Patterson glanced toward Caleb.

"And thank you for what you did yesterday.""

Caleb shrugged.

"I just took a picture.""

"Sometimes that's exactly what needs to happen.""

At 9:15, Denise arrived.

She had taken the morning off work.

She entered the district conference room with Malik beside her.

Daniel Mitchell was already there.

So was Angela Brooks.

Dr. Reynolds sat at the head of the table.

A large screen displayed several scanned documents.

"Good morning," she said.

Denise nodded.

"Good morning.""

Dr. Reynolds motioned toward two chairs.

"Please sit.""

Malik sat beside his mother.

He noticed a stack of folders arranged in front of the superintendent.

Each folder had a different student's name written on it.

Dr. Reynolds opened the first.

"Before we begin, I want to explain what we discovered.""

She turned toward Angela.

"Angela, would you summarize the records?""

Angela nodded.

"During my time at Westbrook, I became aware of several complaints involving Mrs. Baxter. Some concerned physical discipline. Others involved threats, public humiliation, and comments directed at students based on their family circumstances.""

Denise frowned.

"How many complaints?""

"Six documented cases over approximately three years.""

Malik looked at the folders.

"Did all six students get hit?""

Angela shook her head.

"No. The incidents were different.""

She opened one folder.

"This student reported that Mrs. Baxter grabbed his wrist and forced him to stand at the front of the room after he refused to read aloud.""

Another folder.

"This girl reported being called lazy and ungrateful because her family qualified for school assistance.""

Another.

"A student claimed Mrs. Baxter threatened to lower his grade after his mother questioned an examination score.""

Denise slowly shook her head.

"How could nobody know?""

Angela looked down.

"People knew pieces of it. But the complaints were handled separately, and families were often told there wasn't enough evidence.""

Dr. Reynolds spoke.

"That is why we are investigating the reporting process itself.""

Daniel opened his briefcase.

"I found something in the archived records last night.""

He placed a document on the table.

"These are copies of the original student statements and the versions entered into the official system.""

Dr. Reynolds studied them.

"What's the difference?""

Daniel pointed to two paragraphs.

"The original statement says the student was struck twice after asking for clarification about an assignment.""

He pointed to the second version.

"The official report says the teacher used a ruler to demonstrate a classroom rule without making physical contact.""

Denise stared.

"That's not even the same story.""

"Exactly," Daniel replied.

Malik looked at the documents.

"So someone changed what the kids said?""

Dr. Reynolds nodded.

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

Angela turned toward the superintendent.

"I told Richard Hargrove about these differences.""

"And what did he say?""

"He said the official versions were more professional.""

Daniel laughed without humor.

"Professional?""

Angela's voice became emotional.

"I asked him whether the children had approved the changes. He told me I was making things unnecessarily complicated.""

Denise shook her head.

"Those were children.""

Angela nodded.

"That's what I kept telling him.""

For a moment, the room fell silent.

Then Dr. Reynolds closed the first folder.

"We have contacted the families. Two have agreed to provide statements. Jasmine is scheduled to arrive at ten.""

Malik looked toward the clock.

"Is she really coming?""

"Yes.""

At precisely 10:03, someone knocked.

Angela stood.

"That should be her.""

The door opened.

Jasmine Reed entered.

She was twenty-one now, with shoulder-length braids, a dark green sweater, and a leather bag hanging from one shoulder.

She looked older than the girl in the photograph Angela had shown them.

But her eyes were the same.

She approached the table.

"Hi.""

Dr. Reynolds stood.

"Jasmine. Thank you for coming.""

Jasmine nodded.

Then she noticed Malik.

"You're Malik?""

"Yes.""

She smiled gently.

"I wish we were meeting under different circumstances.""

Malik gave a small smile.

"Me too.""

Jasmine sat across from him.

Denise introduced herself.

"I'm Malik's mother.""

Jasmine reached across the table.

"I'm Jasmine. I'm sorry this happened to your son.""

Denise shook her hand.

"Thank you for coming.""

Dr. Reynolds opened a notebook.

"Jasmine, we'd like you to give a detailed account of what happened seven years ago. You can take your time.""

Jasmine placed her bag on the floor.

Then she removed a small plastic folder.

"My mother wanted me to bring these.""

Inside were medical records, school letters, and photographs.

She handed the first photograph to Dr. Reynolds.

It showed a thirteen-year-old girl's hand.

The skin was swollen.

A dark red line crossed the palm.

Malik stared at it.

It looked painfully familiar.

Jasmine watched him.

"That's from the day Mrs. Baxter hit me.""

Denise covered her mouth.

Jasmine continued.

"My mother took me to urgent care because my hand kept swelling. The doctor said there was bruising consistent with blunt impact.""

Dr. Reynolds studied the medical report.

"Was the injury reported to the school?""

"Yes.""

"Do you have a copy?""

Jasmine nodded.

She placed another document on the table.

It was a letter from her mother.

The letter was handwritten and dated seven years earlier.

Jasmine pointed to the bottom.

"That's my mother's signature.""

Dr. Reynolds read the final paragraph.

Her expression became serious.

"Jasmine, this letter says your mother requested a formal investigation.""

"She did.""

"But the school record says she declined to pursue the complaint.""

Jasmine nodded.

"That's what they told everyone.""

Denise looked up.

"What happened?""

Jasmine took a breath.

"My mother received a phone call from Principal Hargrove. He told her that if she continued making accusations, I could lose my place in the advanced academic program.""

Malik frowned.

"Could they really do that?""

Jasmine shook her head.

"No. But I didn't know that then.""

Her voice became quieter.

"I was terrified. I thought if my mother kept fighting, I would lose the only school opportunity I had.""

Denise reached for Jasmine's hand.

"I'm sorry.""

Jasmine gave a small nod.

"Thank you.""

Dr. Reynolds wrote something down.

"Did Mrs. Baxter ever apologize?""

Jasmine almost laughed.

"No.""

"Did she ever acknowledge what happened?""

"She told me that I needed to learn the difference between being corrected and being victimized.""

Malik lowered his eyes.

He recognized the kind of language.

Words that made a child question his own experience.

Words that made pain sound like a lesson.

Then Jasmine reached into her folder again.

"There is one more thing.""

She removed a folded piece of paper.

It was a printed email.

"Mrs. Baxter sent this to me through my school account two days after the incident.""

Dr. Reynolds accepted it.

She read it.

Then she read it again.

"What does this mean?""

Jasmine leaned forward.

"She told me that if I wanted a successful future, I should stop making myself look like a victim.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"She sent that directly to a thirteen-year-old?""

"Yes.""

Malik looked at the email.

Then he noticed the date.

April 17.

The same date as the message Angela had found.

The same date as the principal's instruction to keep the complaint inside the building.

He looked at Daniel.

"Mr. Mitchell?""

Daniel turned.

"Yes, Malik?""

"Why would Principal Hargrove protect her?""

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Jasmine spoke.

"Because Mrs. Baxter wasn't just an ordinary teacher.""

Dr. Reynolds looked at her.

"Explain.""

Jasmine took another document from her bag.

It was a school fundraising announcement.

A photograph showed Mrs. Baxter standing beside a smiling man in a suit.

The caption read:

*The Baxter Family Education Foundation Announces $250,000 Donation to Westbrook Middle School.*

Denise frowned.

"Her family?""

Jasmine nodded.

"Her father established the foundation. He was a major donor to the school.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"How major?""

Jasmine pointed to another page.

"According to the old school newsletter, the foundation paid for the library renovation, the computer lab, and the new science equipment.""

Dr. Reynolds stared at the documents.

"That's a conflict of interest.""

Angela nodded.

"It was never formally disclosed.""

Malik looked confused.

"So she was allowed to do whatever she wanted because her family gave the school money?""

Dr. Reynolds shook her head.

"No. Nobody is allowed to harm students. Donations do not change district policy.""

Jasmine looked at the superintendent.

"But they changed how people treated her.""

She paused.

"Even teachers were afraid to report her.""

Angela's expression became pained.

"I was.""

Jasmine looked at her.

"You tried to help me.""

Angela shook her head.

"Not enough.""

"You were the only person who listened.""

The two women shared a quiet moment.

Then Dr. Reynolds turned toward the district official.

"I want the foundation's financial relationship with the school reviewed. I also want all archived complaints preserved.""

The official nodded.

"Understood.""

Daniel opened another folder.

"There is one more issue.""

Dr. Reynolds looked at him.

"What?""

He placed a printed report on the table.

"The six complaints we found were not the only records removed from the system.""

He pointed toward a highlighted section.

"There's a reference to an additional incident involving a student named Noah Bennett.""

Jasmine's face changed.

She looked at Angela.

"That's the boy I told you about.""

Angela frowned.

"Which boy?""

"The one who transferred schools after Mrs. Baxter threatened him.""

Malik looked up.

"What happened to him?""

Jasmine took a breath.

"He was my friend. He saw what happened to me.""

"Did he report it?""

"He tried.""

Daniel turned the document toward Dr. Reynolds.

"According to the archive, Noah's family filed a complaint three weeks after Jasmine's.""

Dr. Reynolds read the report.

Then she looked at the final line.

*Student withdrawn from Westbrook Middle School following parental request.*

Jasmine shook her head.

"His parents didn't request that.""

Angela's eyes widened.

"How do you know?""

"Because Noah told me.""

Dr. Reynolds leaned forward.

"Where is he now?""

Jasmine hesitated.

Then she reached into her bag and pulled out her phone.

"I've been trying to contact him for months.""

She showed them a recent message.

It had been sent the previous night.

*Jasmine, I saw the news about Malik. If you're serious about reopening this, I have something I've kept since seventh grade.*

Malik leaned closer.

"What is it?""

Jasmine looked at him.

Then she read the rest of the message.

*I recorded the conversation between Mrs. Baxter and Principal Hargrove. The day they decided to make us all look like liars.*

The room went completely silent.

Dr. Reynolds slowly sat back.

"Jasmine, can you arrange a meeting with him?""

Jasmine nodded.

"I can try.""

Then another notification appeared.

A new message.

From Noah.

*I'm ready to talk. But I won't come to Westbrook. And I need you to know something before we meet.*

Jasmine opened it.

Her face went pale.

She turned the phone around.

The message contained one final sentence.

*The recording doesn't just expose Mrs. Baxter. It exposes the person who told her she would never face consequences.*

May you like

Everyone looked toward the empty chair where Principal Hargrove had been sitting earlier.

And suddenly, the investigation looked much bigger than anyone had imagined.
