Amused

Chapter 5: The Account With My Name on It

I didn't sleep that night.

At 11:43 p.m., I sat at the kitchen table with a cup of tea that had gone cold, staring at the manila envelope my father had left behind.

Lily had finally fallen asleep in my bedroom, curled beneath my old quilt with her pink backpack resting beside the bed.

Before she drifted off, she'd asked me three times whether Grandpa was coming back.

Each time, I'd promised her he would.

I wasn't sure whether I was trying to reassure her or myself.

Daniel hadn't returned after leaving the house. He had sent one message at 9:18 p.m.

*Don't make any decisions until we talk. You owe me that much.*

I hadn't answered.

At 10:02, another message appeared.

*Your father is manipulating you. Don't let him destroy our family because of a misunderstanding.*

Then, at 10:47:

*I hope you understand the consequences of what you're doing.*

I had taken screenshots of all three messages and sent them to my father.

He replied with one sentence.

*Keep every message. Don't argue with him tonight.*

So I sat in the kitchen, listening to the house settle around me.

At midnight, I finally opened the manila envelope.

Inside were four pages.

The first was the authorization document bearing my forged signature. The second was a copy of the deed. The third appeared to be a bank statement, and the fourth was a printed email with Daniel's name at the top.

I picked up the bank statement.

My name appeared on the first line.

Vanessa Marie Carter.

Below it was an account number I didn't recognize.

The statement showed an opening balance of $18,500, followed by several transfers and withdrawals.

My hands began to sweat.

I had never opened that account.

I read the dates carefully.

The account had been opened fourteen months earlier.

I was at work that day. I remembered because Lily had developed a fever at school, and I'd left the clinic early to pick her up.

According to the statement, the account had received three deposits over the following six months, totaling $31,200.

Then the withdrawals began.

$4,000.

$6,500.

$2,800.

$7,200.

The final balance was less than $900.

I stared at the numbers until they blurred.

Where had the money come from?

And why was my name attached to an account I had never seen?

I picked up the printed email.

It was a message from Daniel to someone named Michael.

The subject line read: *Authorization Documents—Final Review.*

The email itself was short.

The signature page is ready. I'll send the remaining paperwork once the account is active. She doesn't need to be involved in the day-to-day management. Just confirm the transfer schedule.

Beneath the message was a reply.

Understood. I'll proceed once the documentation is complete.

There was no explanation of what the transfers were for.

No mention of my permission.

No indication that I had even been informed.

I photographed every page and sent the images to my father.

Then I searched my email for the name Michael.

Nothing.

I searched my phone contacts.

Nothing.

At 12:26 a.m., I heard a car pull into the driveway.

I froze.

Headlights swept across the kitchen window.

A car door slammed.

Then footsteps approached the front porch.

I stood and moved toward the hallway.

The doorbell rang once.

I looked through the peephole.

Daniel.

I didn't open the door.

He rang again, then knocked.

"Vanessa, I know you're awake.""

I stood on the other side of the door, my heart pounding.

"What do you want?""

"To talk to my wife.""

"It's after midnight.""

"I left some things here.""

"Tell me what you need, and I'll put them outside.""

He laughed bitterly.

"Are you serious? You're going to make me stand on the porch like a stranger?""

I glanced toward the staircase.

Lily was asleep upstairs.

I lowered my voice.

"You're waking her up.""

"Then open the door.""

I didn't move.

Daniel struck the door with the heel of his hand.

"Vanessa!""

I flinched, but I kept my feet planted.

"Stop hitting the door.""

"Then stop treating me like a criminal!""

I looked at the documents on the kitchen table.

"I found the bank statement.""

Silence.

A long, uncomfortable silence.

Then Daniel's voice changed.

"Which bank statement?""

"The account opened in my name.""

He didn't answer immediately.

When he spoke again, he sounded almost gentle.

"Vanessa, I can explain that.""

"Good. Explain it.""

"Not through a door.""

"Then explain it tomorrow, with a lawyer present.""

His hand struck the door again.

"You don't need a lawyer! You're my wife!""

I stepped away from the door.

"That doesn't mean you can open accounts in my name.""

"You have no idea what you're talking about!""

"Then tell me what the money was for.""

Silence again.

I heard him pace across the porch.

Finally, he said, "The money was part of a business arrangement. It was temporary. I was going to tell you.""

"When?""

"When everything was finished.""

"What was finished, Daniel?""

He exhaled sharply.

"You're making this much bigger than it is.""

I returned to the kitchen and picked up the statement.

"The account received more than thirty thousand dollars. Most of it is gone. I never opened it, and I never authorized you to use my name.""

"You signed the paperwork.""

"No, I didn't.""

"You signed something.""

"Not that.""

He went quiet.

I could almost picture him standing on the porch, rubbing his forehead and searching for the right explanation.

Then he tried another approach.

"Vanessa, do you remember when I told you the company was having cash-flow problems last year?""

I remembered.

He'd come home one evening and told me a major client had delayed payment. He said the company was struggling to cover a few short-term expenses.

He had seemed worried, and I'd offered to help.

He told me not to concern myself with business matters.

Now I understood why.

"That has something to do with the account?"" I asked.

"It's complicated.""

"Try me.""

He sighed.

"I needed a temporary credit line. Your credit history was clean, and mine had a few issues from an old business venture. I thought using your information would help us get a better rate.""

I gripped the counter.

"You opened a financial account using my information without asking me?""

"I was going to tell you!""

"Daniel, that's not an answer.""

"I did it for our family!""

"Then why did you hide it?""

He didn't respond.

I could hear him breathing on the other side of the door.

Finally, he said, "Because I knew you'd react like this.""

The words struck me with an almost unbearable clarity.

He had made a decision that affected my finances, used my identity without my permission, and hidden the evidence.

And now he was blaming my reaction for his secrecy.

I closed my eyes.

"Go home, Daniel.""

"This is my home.""

"No. It isn't.""

The words came out quietly.

I hadn't planned to say them, but once they were spoken, I couldn't take them back.

"This house belongs to my father. I live here because he gave me a home. You don't get to use that against me anymore.""

For several seconds, there was no sound.

Then Daniel said, "Your father has been waiting for a chance to turn you against me.""

"No. He asked questions, and you couldn't answer them.""

"You'll regret this.""

"Maybe. But I'm not signing anything, and I'm not pretending I don't know what you've done.""

His footsteps moved away from the door.

I heard the car start.

Then the sound faded down the street.

I locked the door again, even though it was already locked.

My hands were trembling so badly that I had to sit down.

At 12:41 a.m., my phone rang.

It was my father.

"Vanessa, are you awake?""

"Yes.""

"Did Daniel come by?""

I looked at the front door.

"Yes. He wanted to talk.""

"Did you let him inside?""

"No.""

"Good. I don't want you handling this alone.""

I told him about the bank statement and the account.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he was silent for a moment.

"Did you recognize the name Michael?""

"No. I searched my email and contacts.""

"All right. I found out who he is.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

"He's an accountant who worked with Daniel on a real estate investment several years ago. He contacted me because he was concerned about some documents Daniel submitted.""

"What documents?""

"That's what I'm trying to establish.""

I looked down at the printed email.

"Does he know about the account?""

"He knows about the account and several transactions connected to it. He believes your information may have been used without your consent.""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"How much money are we talking about?""

My father paused.

"More than the amount shown on that statement.""

The room seemed to grow colder.

"How much more?""

"I don't have a verified total yet. I won't give you a number until the records support it.""

I appreciated that he didn't try to soften the truth with guesses.

"What's going to happen now?""

"We'll make copies of everything. Tomorrow, we'll contact the bank through its official channels, secure your financial information, and speak with an attorney about the proper next steps.""

I swallowed.

"Will Daniel go to jail?""

"That's not something I can predict. First, we establish what happened. Then the appropriate people determine whether any laws were broken.""

I nodded, even though he couldn't see me.

"Okay.""

"Vanessa?""

"Yes?""

"You don't have to protect him from the consequences of his own decisions.""

I looked toward the staircase.

"I know.""

But the truth was, I was still afraid.

Not just of losing my marriage.

I was afraid of discovering that the man I'd trusted with my future had been quietly dismantling it while telling me I was the one who couldn't be trusted.

At 7:15 the next morning, I took Lily to school.

She held my hand all the way to the classroom door.

"Is Daddy coming home today?"" she asked.

I crouched beside her.

"I don't know yet, sweetheart.""

"Are you and Daddy getting divorced?""

The question stopped me cold.

I brushed a strand of hair from her face.

"Whatever happens between Mommy and Daddy, we both love you. You don't have to choose sides.""

She studied my face.

"Can I still see Grandpa?""

I hugged her.

"Of course you can.""

She nodded, then ran into the classroom.

I waited until she disappeared inside before returning to my car.

My phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from the bank named on the statement.

*Subject: Important Notice Regarding Your Account Application*

I opened it.

The message stated that the bank had received a request to increase the credit limit associated with my account.

The request had been submitted at 11:58 p.m. the previous night.

While Daniel was standing outside our front door, demanding that I let him inside, someone had attempted to borrow more money using my name.

I stared at the screen.

Then I read the last line.

*Please contact our fraud prevention department immediately. Your application has been temporarily suspended pending verification of the submitted documents.*

I called my father.

When he answered, I could barely get the words out.

"Someone tried to increase the credit limit last night.""

He was silent for one beat.

Then he said, "Send me the email. Don't click any links in it. We'll contact the bank using the number on its official website.""

I forwarded the message.

Less than a minute later, he called back.

"Vanessa, I need you to listen carefully.""

"What is it?""

"The bank's fraud department has flagged more than one application connected to your information.""

I gripped the steering wheel.

"How many?""

"Three.""

My breath caught.

"And there's another problem.""

I closed my eyes.

"What now?""

My father lowered his voice.

"One of those applications lists you as the guarantor for a business loan Daniel took out almost a year ago.""

I couldn't speak.

Because the loan amount was listed beneath my name.

May you like

*$185,000.*

And according to the bank's records, I had personally guaranteed every dollar.
