Amused

Chapter 2: The Wife He Never Knew

The ballroom became completely silent.

Adrian stared at the document in Marcus's hand like it was something impossible.

"What is that?""

Marcus walked closer.

"Your wife's family records.""

Adrian laughed.

A nervous laugh.

The kind people make when they don't understand the danger standing in front of them.

"My wife's family records?"" he repeated.

"She doesn't have anyone.""

That sentence hurt more than the slap.

Not because it was true.

Because it showed how little he knew me.

Julian stepped forward.

"Interesting.""

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"You spent eight years married to Elena and never bothered to learn where she came from.""

Vanessa looked between them.

"Who are these people?""

Nobody answered her.

That frightened her.

Adrian pointed at Marcus.

"Elena told me her parents died when she was young.""

"They did," I said quietly.

Everyone looked at me.

"My parents are gone.""

I swallowed.

"But my brothers aren't.""

The color drained from Adrian's face.

"No.""

Marcus handed him the document.

"Elena Vale. Youngest child of Richard and Catherine Vale.""

Adrian scanned the paper.

His eyes moved faster.

"No.""

"Yes," Julian said.

"You married into the Vale family.""

The whispers started immediately.

People recognized the name.

Everyone knew the Vales.

Marcus Vale.

The judge.

Julian Vale.

The billionaire.

Caleb Vale.

The police captain.

And me.

The sister they thought disappeared years ago.

Adrian looked at me like he had never seen me before.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

I almost laughed.

Because the answer was simple.

I wanted to know if he loved me without the money.

Without the influence.

Without the family name.

"I told you," I said.

"I wanted a marriage, not a business arrangement.""

Vanessa's confident expression began cracking.

"So what?"" she said sharply.

"She has rich brothers. That doesn't change what happened.""

Caleb finally spoke.

His voice was quiet.

"You mean the part where your boyfriend slapped my sister?""

The entire room shifted.

Boyfriend.

Not husband.

Because everyone now understood what Vanessa was.

Her face turned pale.

"Careful," Adrian warned.

Caleb smiled without humor.

"No. You should be careful.""

Adrian looked at me.

"You planned this.""

The accusation shocked me.

"You think I planned being slapped?""

"You brought them here.""

"No.""

I looked around the room.

"I invited them because they are my family.""

My family.

The words felt strange after years of hiding.

Marcus studied Adrian.

"You have been telling people Elena had no family for years.""

Adrian said nothing.

"Why?""

"I never said that.""

"You implied it.""

Marcus's eyes hardened.

"You benefited from making her look alone.""

The truth landed harder than any accusation.

Because it was true.

Adrian loved telling people he had rescued me.

That he had given me a better life.

He enjoyed being seen as my savior.

But he never wanted people to know I had saved myself long before I met him.

The orchestra quietly left the stage.

The gala organizers whispered in panic.

Nobody cared about the charity speech anymore.

Everyone was watching my marriage collapse.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Elena, we need to talk privately.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

His expression tightened.

"Because we are married.""

I touched my cheek.

"Funny. You remembered that after you embarrassed me in front of everyone.""

His face darkened.

"You are my wife.""

"And you are my husband.""

I paused.

"That should have meant something to you.""

For a moment, I saw guilt.

Real guilt.

Then Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Adrian, don't let her manipulate you.""

That was when I understood.

He wasn't sorry.

He was afraid.

Afraid of losing control.

Afraid of losing his image.

Afraid people would finally see him.

Marcus received a message on his phone.

He looked at the screen.

Then at me.

Something changed in his expression.

"What is it?"" I asked.

Marcus hesitated.

"Elena...""

"What?""

He turned the phone toward me.

It was a photograph.

A photograph of Adrian and Vanessa.

But it wasn't from tonight.

It was from months earlier.

Before I ever suspected anything.

The caption underneath made my blood run cold.

*"Engagement celebration. Six months ago.""*

My husband wasn't just cheating.

May you like

He and Vanessa had been planning a future.

While I was still wearing my wedding ring.
