Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I read the message three times.
Not because I didn’t understand the words.
Because I couldn’t understand how my life had become something I no longer recognized.
*You can’t hide what happened forever. Emma deserves to know the truth about what you did.*
The phone was still in Julian’s hand.
But the message belonged to me now.
The truth belonged to me.
I looked at him.
“Who is Natalie?””
His face went pale.
“Emma—”
“No.””
I raised my hand.
I didn’t want another explanation.
Not another carefully chosen sentence.
Not another version of events where he was scared and confused and I was expected to understand.
“Who is Natalie?””
Julian sat down slowly.
“She was someone I knew before you.””
“You already said that.””
“I’m trying to explain.””
“No.””
My voice was steady.
And that surprised me.
Because a few weeks ago, I would have been crying.
Begging.
Trying to make him feel safe enough to tell me the truth.
But something had changed.
I wasn’t trying to protect the person who hurt me anymore.
“I want facts,” I said.
Julian looked at me.
“Facts?””
“Yes.””
“Emma…”
“Who is she? When did you meet her? Why is she saying you did something?””
His silence lasted too long.
And every second added another crack to something that was already broken.
Finally, he spoke.
“Natalie and I dated in college.””
I nodded.
“Okay.””
“It wasn’t serious.””
“Then why is she contacting you now?””
He looked down.
“Because she knows something.””
“What?””
He swallowed.
“About before we got married.””
I waited.
“Julian.””
He closed his eyes.
“She was pregnant.””
The room went silent.
I felt the words hit me.
Not like a scream.
Like a whisper.
A quiet sentence that somehow changed everything.
“She was what?””
“Pregnant.””
My fingers went cold.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I didn’t know what would happen.””
I stared at him.
“You didn’t know what would happen?””
He looked up.
“I was twenty-four.””
“And?””
“I was scared.””
I almost laughed.
There it was again.
The same word he used every time he wanted me to understand something he did wrong.
“I’m starting to think fear is your favorite excuse.””
His expression hurt.
But I didn’t take it back.
“What happened to the baby?””
Julian looked away.
“I don’t know.””
My heart dropped.
“You don’t know?””
“Natalie left.””
“When?””
“Before I met you.””
“And you never found out?””
He shook his head.
“She told me she wanted nothing to do with me.””
I stared at him.
“And you just accepted that?””
“I tried to contact her.””
“How many times?””
He hesitated.
“Once.””
I couldn’t believe it.
“One time?””
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
I stood up.
“You had a child possibly out there.””
“Emma—”
“And you walked away?””
His voice became desperate.
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
He had no answer.
I spent the next hour walking around the house like a stranger.
Everything looked familiar.
The photos on the wall.
The toys on the floor.
The blankets folded beside the couch.
But the meaning had changed.
I looked at our wedding picture.
Julian smiling.
Me smiling.
Two people promising forever.
Except I was standing beside someone who had kept entire chapters of his life locked away.
How much of our marriage had I actually known?
How much had I only assumed?
The worst part wasn’t the secrets.
It was realizing he had decided I wasn’t strong enough to handle them.
He had made choices for me.
Again.
And again.
And again.
“Emma.””
I turned.
Julian stood behind me.
“I know how this looks.””
I stared at him.
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
“Because I don’t think you do.””
He looked hurt.
I continued.
“You keep saying you were protecting me.””
“I thought I was.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
He didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
That evening, I called Natalie.
Julian tried to stop me.
Not aggressively.
Not angrily.
Almost desperately.
“Emma, please wait.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“I need to talk to her first.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I don’t need you preparing the story.””
His face fell.
“That’s not fair.””
I stared at him.
“Fair?””
The word came out quietly.
“Do you know how many times I sat alone at 3 a.m. wondering why I felt like I was failing?””
He looked down.
“Do you know how many times I thought maybe I wasn’t enough?””
“Emma…”
“I thought the problem was me.””
My voice cracked.
“I thought maybe I wasn’t handling motherhood correctly. Maybe I wasn’t patient enough. Maybe I wasn’t happy enough.””
I wiped my eyes.
“But the whole time, you were carrying secrets I didn’t even know existed.””
Julian whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I believed him.
And somehow, that made it worse.
Because apologies couldn’t return the months I lost.
Natalie answered on the third ring.
“Hello?””
Her voice was softer than I expected.
“Is this Natalie?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Emma.””
Silence.
Then:
“I know.””
My stomach tightened.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
She sighed.
“Because Julian told me you would probably find out eventually.””
I looked at him.
He was standing across the room.
Watching me.
“What did he tell you?””
“That you were a good person.””
The answer surprised me.
“That’s not what I asked.””
“No.””
Her voice became sad.
“It isn’t.””
I sat down.
“I need to know what happened.””
A long silence followed.
Then Natalie said:
“Julian told you about the baby?””
“Yes.””
“Did he tell you he wasn’t sure if the child was his?””
My eyes moved to him.
“Not exactly.””
Natalie laughed softly.
Not happily.
“Of course not.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means Julian has always been good at telling the truth in pieces.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it was exactly what he had done.
Never a complete lie.
Just enough truth to keep me from asking more questions.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Natalie took a breath.
“When I found out I was pregnant, Julian panicked.””
I closed my eyes.
Another woman.
Another moment.
Another version of him being afraid.
“He told me he wasn’t ready to be a father.””
I looked toward the nursery.
“And then?””
“He said he needed time.””
“Did he come back?””
“No.””
My chest tightened.
“He disappeared.””
The word hurt.
Because I knew what it felt like.
Julian didn’t disappear completely from my life.
But emotionally?
He had.
“Why are you contacting me now?”” I asked.
Natalie was quiet.
Then she said:
“Because I found something.””
“What?””
“A letter.””
I frowned.
“What kind of letter?””
“One Julian wrote years ago.””
“About what?””
“About me.””
I looked at Julian.
His face changed.
He knew.
“What did it say?””
Natalie’s voice became lower.
“It said he knew the child was probably his.””
My breath caught.
“But he still left?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because someone convinced him that starting over was easier than facing what he had done.””
I looked at Julian.
“Who?””
Natalie hesitated.
“I don’t know if I should tell you.””
“Please.””
Another silence.
Then:
“Your husband’s father.””
I froze.
“What?””
“His father knew.””
The room spun.
“His father knew about the baby?””
“Yes.””
“And he told Julian to leave?””
Natalie didn’t answer immediately.
But she didn’t need to.
I knew.
After the call ended, I sat there unable to move.
Julian’s father had passed away three years ago.
I remembered him.
A serious man.
A man who rarely showed emotion.
A man who always talked about reputation.
Family image.
Doing the right thing.
The irony almost made me sick.
“Emma.””
I looked at Julian.
“Is it true?””
He didn’t answer.
And I knew.
“Did your father know?””
His eyes filled.
“Yes.””
I felt something inside me collapse.
“How many people knew about this?””
He whispered:
“More than you think.””
I stared at him.
“Who else?””
He looked toward the hallway.
Toward the nursery.
Then back at me.
And I saw the hesitation.
The fear.
The secret that was still waiting.
“Julian.””
He swallowed.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
His voice barely came out.
“The reason Natalie contacted me…”
I waited.
“She didn’t just find the letter.””
“What did she find?””
He looked at me.
“She found the hospital records.””
My heart stopped.
“What hospital records?””
Julian whispered:
“The records from the night Ava and Lily were born.””
I stood completely still.
“Why would she have those?””
He didn’t answer.
And then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
From an unknown number.
I looked down.
One sentence appeared.
*Emma, if you want to know the truth about your daughters, ask Julian who was in the delivery room when they were born.*
I looked up.
Julian was already crying.
And that was when I realized something.
Whatever secret he had been hiding…
May you like
It wasn’t about the past anymore.
It was about the moment my daughters entered this world.
