Amused

Chapter 6: The Name I Was Never Supposed To Know

My father’s words stayed in the air long after the call ended.

*Ask Daniel who you really are.*

I stared at the phone screen.

The call had already disconnected.

But my father’s voice remained.

Not angry.

Not disappointed.

Afraid.

And that terrified me more than anything else.

Because Harrison Hale was not a man who scared easily.

I had spent my entire life knowing him as someone impossible to shake.

He was the kind of person who never apologized first.

The kind of person who turned every disagreement into a battle he had to win.

The kind of person who looked at Marcus’s funeral and complained about the schedule.

But now?

Now he sounded afraid.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel stood across the room.

He already knew.

I could see it.

“You know.””

The words came out quietly.

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

“You know what he means.””

“Claire—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Don’t protect me.””

His expression changed.

“Marcus said you would say that.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked down.

“He told me that if the truth ever came out, you would be angry at everyone except yourself.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Sounds like him.””

A sad smile crossed Daniel’s face.

“Yes.””

Then it disappeared.

“Claire, before I tell you anything, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“The person you believe you are…”

He paused.

“Is not the complete story.””

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“My name is Claire Hale.””

“Yes.””

“My parents are Harrison and Eleanor Hale.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Legally.””

That single word changed everything.

Legally.

Not biologically.

Not truly.

Legally.

I sat down.

Because suddenly my legs didn’t feel strong enough to hold me.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel walked toward the table.

He picked up a file.

“This information was sealed for years.””

“Why?””

“Because it was part of an old protection arrangement.””

I stared at him.

“Protection from what?””

He opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

A little girl.

Maybe five years old.

Standing in front of a house I had never seen.

I looked closer.

The girl had my eyes.

My face.

But I didn’t recognize her.

“That’s me.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

I picked up the photo.

“Where was this taken?””

“Virginia.””

“I’ve never been there.””

“You were.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“You just don’t remember.””

My fingers went cold.

“No.””

Daniel sat across from me.

“Claire, your early childhood records were changed.””

“Changed by who?””

“Your parents.””

“Why?””

He looked at me carefully.

“Because someone was looking for you.””

The room became silent.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Who?””

“People connected to the same network Marcus was investigating.””

I shook my head.

“This makes no sense.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t understand.””

I stood.

“My entire life is suddenly fake.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice was firm.

“Your life is real.””

I stopped.

“The memories are real. The people you loved are real. Your relationship with Marcus was real.””

“Then what isn’t?””

He looked at the file.

“Your beginning.””

I looked away.

Because somehow that hurt more.

Marcus.

My parents.

My entire family.

Everyone seemed to know a version of me that I didn’t.

“Why didn’t Marcus tell me?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he answered:

“Because he was waiting for the right time.””

“And he never found it.””

“No.””

His voice became softer.

“He ran out of time.””

The words hit me.

Marcus ran out of time.

Not left.

Not chose.

Ran out.

I looked back at the file.

“What was my real name?””

Daniel opened another page.

The answer was printed there.

A name I had never heard.

A name that belonged to someone else.

“Amelia.””

I stared.

“Amelia what?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Amelia Rowan.””

The name felt strange.

Foreign.

Like a dress that didn’t fit.

“I’m not Amelia.””

“You are.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“I’m Claire.””

Daniel nodded.

“You are Claire.””

“Then why tell me that?””

“Because someone else knows.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“The people who are looking for Amelia Rowan know you survived.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“Survived what?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And once again, silence became the answer.

I walked toward the window.

Snow covered the ground.

Everything looked peaceful.

But my life had become a puzzle made of secrets.

“Did Marcus know?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since before he met you.””

My stomach dropped.

“Before he met me?””

“Yes.””

I turned around.

“You’re telling me Marcus knew who I was when we started dating?””

Daniel nodded.

“But he didn’t love you because of that.””

The tears came before I could stop them.

“Then why?””

“Because he met you.””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“He met a woman who laughed too loudly at bad jokes. A woman who cried during animal rescue commercials. A woman who pretended she didn’t like surprises but secretly loved them.””

I looked down.

Those were things Marcus knew.

Things nobody else knew.

“He fell in love with Claire.””

Daniel paused.

“Not Amelia.””

I wiped my face.

“Then why did he hide it?””

“Because he wanted you to have a normal life.””

I laughed quietly.

“A normal life?””

I pointed at the files.

“Daniel, my husband died on a classified mission. My family tried to throw me into a garage. Someone is apparently hunting me.””

I looked at him.

“That ship sailed.””

For the first time, Daniel smiled slightly.

“Marcus would have said the same thing.””

I looked at the table.

At all the secrets.

At all the years I had spent unaware.

“Why did my parents adopt me?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“They didn’t.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“They were assigned custody.””

The room went silent.

“Assigned?””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The same people who protected you.””

I shook my head.

“This is impossible.””

“I know it feels that way.””

“No, Daniel.””

I stepped closer.

“I need the truth.””

He nodded.

“You deserve it.””

He pulled out another document.

“This is the original record.””

I read the first line.

*CONFIDENTIAL PROTECTION AGREEMENT*

My hands trembled.

Then I saw the signatures.

One belonged to my father.

One belonged to my mother.

And one belonged to someone else.

Someone whose name made my entire body freeze.

Marcus Hale.

My husband.

I looked up.

“Marcus signed this?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Because Marcus was part of the team that protected you before he ever became your husband.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

The word came out broken.

Because suddenly every memory had a shadow.

Our first meeting.

Our first date.

The night he proposed.

Was any of it real?

Daniel must have seen the question on my face.

“Claire.””

I didn’t respond.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, I did.

“Marcus did not choose you because he was assigned to protect you.””

My eyes filled.

“He chose you because he fell in love with you.””

I looked away.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

“I do.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“Because I watched Marcus carry the guilt of knowing the woman he loved was in danger.””

I looked at him.

“Guilt?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the final document.

“Because Marcus discovered something before he died.””

“What?””

He pushed the paper toward me.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Marcus’s handwriting.

The same handwriting from every letter.

Only this time, the words were not for me.

They were instructions.

*If they discover Amelia survived, they will come for her. If they discover Claire knows the truth, they will come faster.*

My breathing stopped.

Daniel continued.

“And there’s one more thing.””

“What?””

He pointed at the date.

The date the note was written.

Two weeks before Marcus’s final mission.

“Marcus knew someone close to you was searching for your original identity.””

I stared at the page.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“We don’t know.””

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

Only six words.

*Stop searching, Amelia. We found you.*

I dropped the phone.

Because beneath the message was a photograph.

A picture taken only minutes earlier.

May you like

Of me.

Standing outside Marcus’s hidden house.
