Amused

Chapter 6: The Family Secret Beneath the House

The words stayed in the air.

The person who tried to hurt Lily was someone in this family.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Willamina.

For the first time that night, she looked uncertain.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Uncertain.

I looked at Grantham.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

My patience disappeared.

“Who tried to hurt your daughter?””

His eyes moved toward Lily.

“I never wanted you to know this.””

Lily’s expression hardened.

“You keep saying that.””

Her voice was quiet.

“You always say you never wanted me to know.””

She stepped closer.

“But every secret you kept still became my pain.””

Grantham looked destroyed.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You were trying to protect yourself from what happened.””

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

I watched him struggle.

For fifteen years, I had seen Grantham as a man who always knew what to do.

He negotiated million-dollar deals.

He handled difficult people.

He walked into rooms and controlled conversations.

But tonight, standing in front of the daughter he lost and the wife he betrayed, he looked powerless.

“Tell us,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Lena…”

“Tell us.””

This time, there was no anger in my voice.

Only exhaustion.

I was tired of chasing pieces of my own life.

He lowered his head.

“The night before I signed the custody papers, Lily disappeared from the house.””

Lily’s face changed.

“What?””

“I woke up around two in the morning.””

Grantham stared at the ground as if he was watching the memory happen again.

“The back door was open.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What happened?””

“I found Lily outside.””

His voice cracked.

“She was standing near the road.””

Lily shook her head slowly.

“I don’t remember.””

“You were five years old.””

He looked at her.

“You were crying.””

The porch became silent.

“You kept saying someone had followed you.””

Lily’s face went pale.

“What did I say?””

Grantham swallowed.

“You said…”

He stopped.

Then forced himself to continue.

“You said Aunt Willamina told you not to tell anyone.””

Everyone turned.

Willamina’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

A crack in the mask.

“That’s ridiculous,” she said.

Nobody responded.

She laughed.

“Seriously? You’re going to believe a five-year-old’s memory?””

Lily stared at her.

“I remembered enough.””

Willamina’s eyes narrowed.

“You were a child.””

“Yes.””

Lily stepped forward.

“But I was your niece.””

The words carried more weight than an accusation.

Because they were not about one night.

They were about betrayal.

I looked at Willamina.

“Did you go near Lily that night?””

She looked at me.

“You’re asking me?””

“Yes.””

A slow smile appeared.

“You really think I would hurt a child?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

Fifteen years ago, I would have said no.

Tonight, I wasn’t sure about anyone.

Willamina looked at Grantham.

“This is what you do, isn’t it?””

Her voice became sharper.

“You make everyone believe you’re the victim.””

Grantham stepped forward.

“You threatened her.””

“I warned you.””

“You manipulated me.””

“I gave you a choice.””

The words froze me.

“A choice?””

Willamina looked at him.

“Yes.””

She looked almost offended.

“I told you exactly what would happen if you refused.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she threaten?””

Grantham didn’t answer.

I looked at him.

“What did she threaten?””

His silence stretched.

Then Lily spoke.

“She threatened to destroy him.””

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

“My mother found evidence about the company.””

Willamina’s expression changed.

Lily noticed.

“You knew.””

Willamina’s jaw tightened.

“She was unstable.””

“No.””

Lily’s voice became stronger.

“She found out you were stealing from the company.””

I looked at Grantham.

“Is that true?””

He looked shocked.

“I didn’t know about that.””

Willamina laughed.

“Of course you didn’t.””

She shook her head.

“You were always too busy trying to be loved.””

The insult was cruel.

But Grantham didn’t respond.

Because maybe part of him believed it.

I looked at Willamina.

“You threatened him.””

She shrugged.

“I gave him reality.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You controlled him.””

Her eyes met mine.

“And yet he still made his own choices.””

That sentence stopped me.

Because she was right about one thing.

Grantham was not a puppet.

He had choices.

He chose silence.

He chose hiding.

He chose letting me believe a false version of our marriage.

He chose.

I turned toward him.

“Did you know what would happen to Lily?””

His face fell.

“I knew she would be taken somewhere safe.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

A long silence.

Finally:

“I knew I might not see her again.””

Lily closed her eyes.

The pain on her face was immediate.

Ten years of wondering.

Ten years of waiting.

Ten years of believing she wasn’t worth fighting for.

And now she had the answer.

He had known.

I felt sick.

“You let her go.””

“I thought I was saving her.””

“You thought.””

My voice shook.

“You thought.””

The phrase felt unbearable.

Because so much damage came from people being certain they knew what was best.

Lily walked away from us.

She wrapped her arms around herself.

“I spent years thinking my mother hated him.””

Nobody moved.

“I spent years thinking my father forgot me.””

She looked at Grantham.

“But he didn’t forget me.””

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“He chose to lose me.””

Grantham looked devastated.

“Lily, I was wrong.””

She laughed softly.

“That’s all you have?””

He looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

“Sorry doesn’t give me ten years back.””

“No.””

“Sorry doesn’t give me my mother back.””

His face changed.

“Your mother…”

Lily stopped.

“What?””

Grantham looked away.

That movement caught my attention.

“Your mother what?””

Nobody answered.

I stepped toward him.

“Grantham.””

He looked at me.

And I saw fear again.

“What happened to Lily’s mother?””

Lily turned.

“She died.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

She nodded.

“Three years after we disappeared.””

The silence was overwhelming.

Grantham looked at her.

“I tried to find her.””

“But you didn’t.””

“I did.””

“When?””

“After I found out she was sick.””

Lily shook her head.

“You found out.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Not because you were looking.””

Grantham had no defense.

Because there was none.

I looked at the man I married.

I had spent fifteen years believing his biggest flaw was avoidance.

I was wrong.

His biggest flaw was that he could convince himself avoidance was love.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Another unknown message.

I looked down.

A video file.

No words.

Just a date.

Ten years ago.

I hesitated.

Lily saw my expression.

“What is it?””

I didn’t answer.

I pressed play.

The screen showed a dark hallway.

A security camera recording.

Timestamped.

The date matched the night Lily disappeared.

The footage was blurry.

But clear enough.

A little girl walked down the hallway.

Lily.

She looked frightened.

Then someone entered the frame.

A woman.

I stopped breathing.

Because I recognized the dress.

The same white designer dress Willamina had worn that night.

Lily gasped.

“No…”

The video continued.

The woman crouched down.

She said something I couldn’t hear.

Then Lily followed her.

Toward the back door.

I looked up slowly.

Willamina’s face had lost all color.

“Is this enough proof?”” Lily whispered.

Nobody answered.

The video continued.

A second person appeared.

A man.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized him too.

Younger.

But unmistakable.

Grantham.

He stood in the doorway.

Watching.

Knowing.

I looked at my husband.

He looked at the screen.

And whispered:

“I never knew she recorded it.””

The words made my blood run cold.

“You were there?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Lily stepped back.

“You were there when she took me.””

“I thought I was stopping something worse.””

“You thought?””

Her voice broke.

“What did you know?””

Before he could answer, the video suddenly ended.

A final message appeared on my screen.

One sentence.

*The camera footage was hidden by the same person who protected Grantham for ten years.*

Then another line appeared.

*Ask him who paid to erase the rest.*

I slowly lifted my eyes.

Because I already knew.

The only person powerful enough to hide evidence for ten years.

The only person who had been controlling this family from the beginning.

Willamina.

But when I looked at her…

She wasn’t looking at Grantham.

She wasn’t looking at Lily.

She was looking at me.

May you like

And she whispered:

“You have no idea what your husband did after that video ended.””
