Amused

Chapter 8: The Man Who Came To Warn Me

For a moment, I didn't move.

The message from Daniel remained open on my phone.

*He is not the person who started this plan. He is the person who tried to stop it.*

I read it again.

Then a third time.

Because my mind couldn't accept how quickly everything had changed.

Victor Hale.

The man I thought had returned to hurt me.

The man I thought had helped my son betray me.

Was the person trying to warn me?

I looked through the glass wall of my office toward the lobby below.

Victor stood near the entrance.

Older than I remembered.

His shoulders slightly heavier.

His hair more silver.

But his posture was the same.

Confident.

Controlled.

The posture of someone who had spent years making difficult decisions.

I remembered the last time I saw him.

Five years earlier.

He had stood in my office after a failed investment.

His face was pale.

His hands were shaking.

"I made a mistake, Evelyn.""

I had looked at the financial reports.

The loss was significant.

But not impossible to recover from.

"We all make mistakes.""

"I risked your company.""

"You made a bad decision.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"I forgot what this company was built on.""

I never forgot that sentence.

Because Victor understood something many people didn't.

My company wasn't built on money.

It was built on trust.

And now trust was exactly what was being destroyed.

I walked downstairs.

Victor saw me immediately.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Regret.

"Hello, Evelyn.""

I stopped several feet away.

"Victor.""

He glanced around the lobby.

"Can we speak somewhere private?""

I studied him.

"Why?""

His jaw tightened.

"Because what I have to tell you is not something you should hear with strangers around.""

I almost smiled.

"Strangers?""

My eyes moved across the lobby.

"Interesting word.""

He understood.

I wasn't talking about guests.

I was talking about my family.

Victor lowered his voice.

"Evelyn, please.""

I led him into a small private lounge near the garden.

The moment the door closed, I turned toward him.

"Start talking.""

He nodded.

"I know about Mark.""

My expression hardened.

"What exactly do you know?""

"Enough.""

"That is not an answer.""

He looked down.

"I know he contacted me.""

"Why?""

Victor hesitated.

Then:

"Because he needed help.""

I laughed quietly.

"Help stealing from his mother?""

His face tightened.

"No.""

"Then what?""

"He thought he was protecting himself.""

I stared at him.

"Explain.""

Victor sat down slowly.

"I received a call from Amber.""

Of course.

Everything led back to her.

"What did she want?""

"Information.""

"About my company?""

"About your estate.""

I crossed my arms.

"And you gave it to her?""

"No.""

The answer was immediate.

"Then why were you meeting my son?""

Victor looked at me.

"Because Mark didn't understand what she was doing.""

I frowned.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"I expect you to understand that your son is not the person controlling this.""

Those words hurt.

Not because they were insulting.

Because part of me feared they were true.

"Mark signed documents.""

"Yes.""

"He searched my records.""

"Yes.""

"He lied to me.""

Victor nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then how is he not responsible?""

Victor looked away.

"Because Amber convinced him that he was protecting his future.""

I said nothing.

He continued.

"She told him you were hiding everything from him because you didn't trust him.""

My heart tightened.

Because that was exactly what Mark had said.

"She told him that if something happened to you, he would be left with nothing.""

I looked toward the window.

The ocean moved in the distance.

"Nothing?""

Victor sighed.

"She used fear.""

I turned back.

"Why do you know so much?""

That was the question I had been waiting to ask.

Victor was silent.

Too silent.

"Victor.""

He looked at me.

"Because she contacted me first.""

The room became still.

"What?""

"Amber contacted me months ago.""

I felt something shift.

"Months?""

"Yes.""

"Before the vacation?""

"Yes.""

I walked toward the table.

"Why?""

Victor looked ashamed.

"Because she wanted someone who understood your business structure.""

My voice lowered.

"She wanted you to help her take control.""

He didn't deny it.

"Yes.""

"And you considered it.""

His eyes dropped.

"At first.""

That honesty surprised me.

"Why?""

Victor took a breath.

"Because I was angry.""

I looked at him.

"At me?""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"At myself.""

He rubbed his hands together.

"When I left your company, I felt humiliated. I spent years believing you saw me as a failure.""

I remembered that day.

I remembered offering him help.

I remembered him refusing.

"I never thought that.""

"I know that now.""

His voice cracked slightly.

"But back then, I was bitter.""

The admission hung between us.

"Then what changed?""

Victor looked at me.

"Your son.""

I frowned.

"What about him?""

"I met with Mark. I expected someone greedy.""

He paused.

"But I found someone scared.""

I didn't know whether that made me feel better or worse.

"He told me he was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing everything.""

I shook my head.

"Everything?""

Victor nodded.

"That was when I realized Amber had convinced him that you were preparing to leave him behind.""

I looked away.

Because that sounded exactly like something a person would believe if they had spent years misunderstanding love.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Victor was quiet.

"I tried.""

"When?""

"Yesterday morning.""

I looked at him.

"You were the person outside my records room.""

He nodded.

"I was trying to get proof.""

"Of what?""

"Of Amber's plan.""

He reached into his jacket.

My body immediately tensed.

But he didn't pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small envelope.

"I found this.""

He placed it on the table.

I stared at it.

"What is it?""

"The original agreement.""

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a copy of a document.

The title made my stomach tighten.

*Family Asset Management Proposal.*

I read the first page.

Then the second.

It was a plan.

A plan for transferring control of my financial decisions.

Not after my death.

While I was alive.

The names were there.

Mark.

Amber.

And someone else.

I looked up.

"Who prepared this?""

Victor didn't answer.

"Victor.""

His eyes met mine.

"Your son.""

The pain was immediate.

"Mark prepared it?""

"Yes.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

The word came out before I could stop it.

"No, he wouldn't.""

Victor looked at me sadly.

"Evelyn.""

I looked down again.

The document was real.

The signatures were real.

But there was something I noticed.

Something Victor had missed.

A small detail.

A line near the bottom.

A witness section.

I read the name.

And my blood ran cold.

Because the witness wasn't Amber.

It wasn't Victor.

It wasn't Daniel.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been working at Serenity Shores for years.

Someone who knew every part of my life.

I looked at Victor.

"Who else has a copy of this?""

He hesitated.

"Only the people involved.""

"That's not true.""

His expression changed.

"What do you mean?""

I held up the document.

"The witness signature.""

Victor looked closer.

His face changed.

"Who is that?""

I didn't answer.

Because I already knew.

The signature belonged to Sarah.

My front-desk manager.

The woman who had helped me uncover everything.

The woman I trusted.

The woman who had warned me about Mark.

I stood slowly.

Victor looked confused.

"Evelyn?""

I folded the document.

"Thank you for coming here.""

"Where are you going?""

I looked toward the lobby.

"To ask someone why they lied to me.""

I walked out of the lounge.

My mind was racing.

Sarah had known.

She had known more than she admitted.

Every warning.

Every piece of information.

Every moment where she acted surprised.

I had trusted her.

And now I didn't know what was real.

When I reached the front desk, Sarah looked up.

Her face immediately changed.

She knew.

Not what I knew.

But she knew something was wrong.

"Mrs. Montgomery?""

I placed the document on the counter.

Her eyes moved down.

Then froze.

The color left her face.

"Where did you get this?""

Not:

What is this?

Not:

I don't know what you're talking about.

Where did you get this?

That was the answer.

I felt my chest tighten.

"Sarah.""

She swallowed.

"Please let me explain.""

I looked at the woman I had trusted.

The woman who had stood beside me when I needed help.

May you like

And I asked quietly:

"How long have you been working with my son?""
