Chapter 10: The Last Secret of the Reed Family
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Marcus stood beneath the flickering warehouse light, holding a briefcase that contained copies of documents powerful enough to destroy his family.
Across from him, Daniel pointed a gun at his six-year-old daughter.
Vanessa stood beside Ava, her face drained of color.
And Gregory Shaw watched from the shadows.
"Bring me the recording," Daniel repeated.
Marcus slowly lowered the briefcase.
"Let my daughter go.""
Daniel laughed.
"You're still negotiating like you have something I want.""
"I have the documents.""
"Not the original recording.""
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
Daniel's finger tightened around the trigger.
"Don't insult me, Marcus. Father made several recordings. One of them contains the truth about what happened in his office.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Daniel, we agreed we wouldn't discuss that.""
He turned toward her.
"Shut up.""
"You said we were getting the documents and leaving.""
"Plans change.""
Gregory stepped into the light.
"Both of you need to calm down.""
Daniel pointed the gun at him.
"Stay out of this.""
Marcus noticed something.
Gregory wasn't looking at Daniel.
He was looking at Vanessa.
And Vanessa was watching Gregory's right hand.
There was something between them.
Something they weren't saying.
"Daniel," Marcus said carefully, "you told me Dad died naturally. Then you told me he died because of the accident. Now you're saying Vanessa killed him.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Your father was a fool.""
"What happened that night?""
Daniel looked toward Gregory.
"Tell him.""
Gregory shook his head.
"No.""
Daniel laughed.
"Tell him, Gregory.""
Vanessa stepped backward.
"Daniel, stop.""
But Daniel was enjoying himself now.
"Your father discovered that Gregory had been stealing from the company. He discovered Vanessa was using fake accounts. He discovered I had arranged the whole operation.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Then why did you kill him?""
Daniel's expression changed.
"I didn't.""
The words came too quickly.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"Who did?""
She said nothing.
Daniel smiled.
"Your fiancée.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You're lying.""
"Am I?""
Daniel looked at Gregory.
"Tell him what happened after Richard fell.""
Gregory's face hardened.
"Daniel, we need to leave.""
"Not until he understands.""
Daniel turned back toward Marcus.
"Father was still alive when I left the office that night. He had fallen, hit his head, and was barely conscious. I told Vanessa to call an ambulance.""
Marcus stared.
"You left him?""
"I had to protect myself.""
"And Vanessa?""
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"She did something I never expected.""
Vanessa began crying.
"Daniel, please.""
He ignored her.
"She took a pillow from the sofa and held it over his face.""
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
"Why?""
"Because your father was going to expose all of us.""
Vanessa suddenly screamed.
"YOU TOLD ME HE WAS ALREADY DEAD!""
The warehouse went silent.
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time, he seemed genuinely surprised.
Then he laughed.
"Thank you.""
Vanessa realized what she had said.
She covered her mouth.
Gregory stepped toward her.
"Vanessa, stop talking.""
Marcus looked at the woman he had almost married.
"You killed my father.""
She began shaking her head.
"I didn't have a choice.""
"You killed him.""
"He was going to destroy everything!""
"He was your employer!""
"He promised me a future!""
Marcus took a step forward.
Daniel raised his gun.
"Don't move.""
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
"Your father used me. He told me I would be part of the family. He said he would leave me money.""
"So you murdered him?""
"He was going to send me to prison!""
Marcus felt something inside him turn cold.
"You almost killed Claire. You threatened my daughter. You lied to me every single day.""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"I loved you.""
Marcus stared at her.
"No. You loved what you thought I could give you.""
For a moment, Vanessa looked as if he had struck her.
Then Daniel interrupted.
"Enough.""
He pointed the gun toward Ava again.
"Where is the original recording?""
Marcus looked at his daughter.
She was crying silently.
He needed to get her away from them.
He needed to keep Daniel talking.
And he needed Detective Brooks to have a clear shot.
"Daniel, I have something to tell you.""
"What?""
"Father left me another letter.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"Where?""
"At the house.""
"You're lying.""
"He wrote it specifically for me.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"What did it say?""
Marcus looked directly into his brother's eyes.
"It said he knew you were going to kill him.""
Daniel's face twisted.
"Shut up.""
"It said he knew you had tampered with Ethan's car.""
"SHUT UP!""
"It said you were never supposed to inherit the company.""
Daniel's gun moved.
Vanessa took advantage of the distraction.
She grabbed Ava and shoved her toward the nearest stack of wooden crates.
"RUN!""
Ava screamed.
Marcus lunged.
Daniel fired.
The bullet struck a metal support beam.
The warehouse erupted into chaos.
"POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"" Detective Brooks shouted.
Officers poured through the side entrance.
Gregory grabbed Vanessa's arm.
Daniel turned toward the officers and fired again.
One officer fell behind a forklift.
Marcus reached Ava and pulled her beneath a workbench.
"Close your eyes, sweetheart!""
She buried her face against his chest.
Another shot rang out.
Then someone screamed.
Marcus looked up.
Vanessa was standing in the middle of the warehouse, holding Gregory's gun.
She had pointed it at Daniel.
"Drop it!"" Brooks shouted.
Vanessa's hand shook.
"You ruined everything!""
Daniel turned.
"Vanessa, don't.""
"You said we would be rich!""
"We can still get out of here.""
"You killed Richard!""
Daniel laughed.
"You held the pillow!""
Vanessa's face twisted.
For a second, she seemed ready to shoot.
Then Gregory lunged.
He grabbed her wrist.
The gun fired.
Ava screamed.
Marcus covered her ears.
When he looked up again, Gregory was on the floor.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Vanessa dropped the gun.
Daniel tried to run.
Two officers tackled him before he reached the rear exit.
"GET OFF ME!"" he screamed.
One officer forced his hands behind his back.
"Daniel Reed, you're under arrest.""
Daniel struggled.
Then he looked toward Marcus.
"You think this is over?""
Marcus stood slowly, keeping Ava behind him.
Daniel spat toward the floor.
"You're going to lose everything.""
Marcus looked at his brother.
"I already lost the family I thought I had.""
Daniel was dragged toward the exit.
Vanessa remained standing beneath the warehouse lights.
Her white face was streaked with tears.
"Marcus.""
He didn't turn.
"Marcus, please.""
He finally looked at her.
She held out her hand.
"Don't leave me here.""
He stared at her.
"You left my daughter in a room with a gun pointed at her.""
"I didn't mean for that to happen.""
"You chained Claire underwater.""
"Daniel told me to!""
"You pushed her.""
Vanessa began crying harder.
"I didn't know she'd hit her head.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That's the problem, Vanessa. You never cared what happened after you got what you wanted.""
Detective Brooks approached.
"Vanessa Cole, you're under arrest for attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, and multiple financial crimes.""
Vanessa looked at Marcus one last time.
"You'll regret this.""
He didn't answer.
The officers led her away.
Marcus picked up Ava.
She wrapped both arms around his neck.
"Daddy?""
"Yes, baby?""
"Are we going home?""
He kissed her forehead.
"Yes.""
Then he looked at the warehouse floor.
At the gun.
At the blood.
At the place where his family had finally destroyed itself.
"Yes, sweetheart. We're going home.""
Three days later, Marcus sat beside Claire's hospital bed.
She was recovering slowly.
Her voice was stronger, and she could finally sit upright without assistance.
Ava was curled beside her, drawing pictures with colored pencils.
Marcus placed a paper cup of coffee on the bedside table.
"How are you feeling?""
Claire smiled faintly.
"Like someone dropped me into a swimming pool with a truck attached to my ankle.""
Marcus almost laughed.
"That's fair.""
Claire looked at him.
"How's Ava?""
"She's sleeping better.""
"Does she still ask about Vanessa?""
"Sometimes.""
Claire lowered her eyes.
"Poor baby.""
Marcus sat beside the bed.
"I owe you an apology.""
Claire looked at him.
"For what?""
"For believing Vanessa instead of you. For the custody fight. For every time I made you feel like you had to prove you were a good mother.""
Claire was silent.
Marcus continued.
"I should have listened.""
She looked toward Ava.
"She needs both of us to do better.""
"I know.""
"And Marcus?""
"Yes?""
"Don't make promises you can't keep.""
He nodded.
"I won't.""
Claire reached for his hand.
"I'm glad you came into that water.""
Marcus looked down.
"So am I.""
For a moment, they sat quietly.
Then Claire asked the question he had been avoiding.
"What happened to Daniel?""
Marcus exhaled.
"He's being held without bail. The investigators recovered the original financial records, and the warehouse recording has been entered into evidence.""
"And Vanessa?""
"She confessed to killing Dad.""
Claire closed her eyes.
"She admitted it?""
"Yes. Gregory survived surgery. He's cooperating with the investigation.""
Claire looked relieved.
"What about the accident?""
Marcus stared at the window.
"The police reopened Ethan's case.""
"Good.""
"They've contacted his mother. I'm going to see her when you get discharged.""
Claire squeezed his hand.
"She deserves the truth.""
Marcus nodded.
Then he took a folded document from his jacket.
"I found something else.""
Claire looked at it.
"What is it?""
"The original deed to the family estate.""
She frowned.
"Why are you showing me that?""
"Because my father left the house to Margaret.""
Claire smiled faintly.
"That's good.""
"She's decided to sell it.""
"Why?""
"She says she doesn't want to spend another night in a house full of ghosts.""
Claire looked at him.
"What are you going to do?""
Marcus hesitated.
"I don't know yet.""
Ava looked up from her drawing.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Can we have a house with a swimming pool?""
Marcus and Claire exchanged a look.
Then Marcus smiled.
"Maybe one without a pool.""
Ava giggled.
"That's okay.""
She returned to her drawing.
Marcus watched her for a moment.
Then he turned toward Claire.
"There's something else I need to tell you.""
"What?""
"My mother is alive.""
Claire's eyes widened.
"I know.""
"She's staying with Margaret for now. She wants to see you when you're feeling stronger.""
Claire looked toward the window.
"Do you think you can forgive her?""
Marcus thought about it.
"I don't know.""
He remembered the empty coffin.
The years of grief.
The birthdays.
The Christmases.
The unanswered questions.
"But I want to try.""
Claire nodded.
"That's enough for now.""
Two weeks later, Marcus stood outside a small brick house in Charleston.
A woman answered the door.
She was in her sixties, with tired eyes and gray hair.
"Mr. Reed?""
Marcus nodded.
"Mrs. Miller?""
She looked at him carefully.
Then her expression changed.
"Marcus?""
"Yes.""
She stepped aside.
"Come in.""
The house was quiet.
Photographs of Ethan covered one wall.
His high school graduation.
His baseball team.
A family Christmas.
Marcus stood in front of the largest photograph.
Ethan was smiling.
He looked exactly as Marcus remembered.
Mrs. Miller approached.
"I heard about the investigation.""
Marcus swallowed.
"I wanted to tell you the truth myself.""
She nodded.
"Please.""
He explained everything.
The financial fraud.
The tampered brakes.
His father's confession.
Daniel's involvement.
Richard's decision to hide the truth.
And the reason Marcus had spent fifteen years believing he was responsible.
Mrs. Miller listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she sat down.
"All these years...""
Her voice broke.
"You thought you killed my son?""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes.""
She looked at the photograph.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I believed I was responsible.""
She wiped her eyes.
"Ethan never blamed you.""
Marcus looked up.
"What?""
"He told me you were his best friend. He said you would have done anything to protect him.""
Marcus's eyes filled.
"I should have protected him.""
Mrs. Miller shook her head.
"You were a boy.""
She reached across the table and took his hand.
"The people responsible were grown men who knew exactly what they were doing.""
Marcus lowered his head.
For the first time in fifteen years, he allowed himself to cry.
Not because he had lost Ethan.
But because he finally understood that he had never been responsible for losing him.
Six months later, the courtroom was full.
Daniel Reed stood before the judge in a dark suit.
His expensive watch was gone.
His hair had turned noticeably gray.
Vanessa sat several rows behind him.
Neither looked toward Marcus.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Financial fraud.
Witness intimidation.
Conspiracy.
Attempted murder.
Kidnapping.
And the murder of Richard Reed.
Gregory Shaw had pleaded guilty in exchange for cooperation.
Margaret Ellis had testified about the night Richard died.
Eleanor had testified about the threats that forced her into hiding.
And the original recording had captured Daniel admitting his role in the conspiracy.
Vanessa's confession had sealed the case.
When the judge asked Daniel whether he wished to make a statement, he stood.
He looked toward Marcus.
"I made mistakes.""
Marcus didn't move.
Daniel continued.
"I was under pressure. Father never understood what I was trying to build.""
The judge interrupted.
"Mr. Reed, this is not the time to justify your actions.""
Daniel looked down.
Then, almost too quietly to hear, he said:
"I never wanted Ethan to die.""
Marcus stood.
The courtroom fell silent.
"Neither did Ethan.""
Daniel looked up.
Marcus continued.
"You had every opportunity to tell the truth. You could have confessed when Dad was alive. You could have confessed when Claire was accused. You could have confessed when I nearly married Vanessa.""
His voice trembled.
"But you chose money. Every single time.""
Daniel's eyes filled.
"Marcus...""
"No.""
Marcus looked directly at him.
"You don't get to call me your brother anymore.""
He sat down.
The judge delivered the sentence.
Daniel would spend the rest of his life in prison.
Vanessa received a lengthy sentence for her role in the murder conspiracy, attempted murder, and kidnapping.
Gregory received a substantial prison term.
The family empire Richard had built was dismantled.
The money was recovered and returned to the rightful investors.
And the truth about Ethan Miller finally became public.
A year after the wedding that never happened, Marcus stood in a garden beside a small wooden bench.
Ava held his hand.
Claire stood beside them.
And Eleanor watched from a few feet away.
A bronze plaque had been placed on the bench.
For Ethan Miller.
Beloved son. Loyal friend. Never forgotten.
Ava placed a small bouquet of yellow flowers beneath it.
"Is this Daddy's friend?""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
"Was he nice?""
"He was the nicest person I ever knew.""
Ava looked at the photograph on the plaque.
"Then why did the bad people hurt him?""
Marcus crouched.
"Sometimes people do terrible things because they want something they shouldn't have.""
Ava thought about that.
Then she asked, "Did they get what they wanted?""
Marcus looked toward Claire.
Then toward his mother.
"No, baby.""
He kissed her forehead.
"They lost something much more important.""
"What?""
"Everyone who loved them.""
Ava slipped her small hand into his.
Then she ran toward Claire.
Marcus remained beside the bench for another moment.
He thought about his father.
About the mistakes Richard had made.
About the truth he had buried.
About the people who had suffered because he had been too afraid to expose his own son.
Marcus couldn't forgive everything.
But he could stop the lies from continuing.
He turned toward his family.
And for the first time in years, he felt no need to look over his shoulder.
Claire approached him.
"Ready to go?""
Marcus smiled.
"Yes.""
Ava ran ahead.
"Come on, Daddy! Mommy's waiting!""
Marcus took Claire's hand.
They walked toward their daughter beneath the afternoon sunlight.
There would be no wedding arch.
No expensive diamond.
No promises made in front of three hundred guests.
Just two parents who had nearly lost everything, a little girl who had refused to stay silent, and a family learning how to begin again.
Marcus glanced once at the memorial.
Then he followed his daughter home.
*Because the most important words spoken at his wedding weren't the vows he had prepared.*
May you like
They were the desperate words of a six-year-old girl who had the courage to stop them.
"Daddy! DON'T SAY I DO! MOMMY IS UNDER THE POOL!""
